477.0. "Leap Year Proposal" by SKETCH::BASSETT (Design) Mon Feb 29 1988 15:36

Leap Year Day is the day when women ask men for their hand in marriage.
At least that is what I have heard.

How does a woman ask?? I would love to ask my SO but have no idea
how. Any suggestions? Men...how would you like to be asked??

As a man, I would just love to be asked. I think that is a neat idea.
Best of luck (from somebody who has always loved Sadie Hawkins day).

My only suggestion is try to arrange a romantic dinner ASAP either in or out.
Try and make it a bit mysterious (so your SO wonders why you are going to all
of this trouble but enjoys the attention).

Interesting this should come up. Coming into work this morning I heard a
woman ask for her SO's hand in marriage over the RADIO! At first I thought
it was a joke, but not so. NOT that I think there's anything wrong with a
woman asking a man, I just thought it was a tad surprising to hear it over
the radio!!!

I thought I'd throw it out there, but I don't know as I'd recommend it! I
still think the best way is to get the good eye contact and the sincere voice
and let'r rip. But then, I always have been a bit old-fashioned. ;-)

Feb. 29 is popularly considered "Sadie Hawkins' Day", after the
event in the "Li'l Abner" comic strip, but my understanding is
that in the strip, it was actually some day in September! Well,
we need something amusing for Feb. 29 anyway!

I would be thrilled to have an SO propose to me, as long as it was
something we had discussed doing previously (getting married, not
scheduling the proposal!) Do try to make it a surprise!

     re .0:

The traditional way is to say, "Darling, I love you, I need you, I
cannot live without you. Will you marry me?"

Dinner, flowers, champagne, and jewelry are often used to heighten the
    mood.

A suprise was probably a bad idea. I believe I was thinking along the
lines of what you said above (the proposal from you and the timing
would be a suprise but not the idea of marriage). I guess I thought
a suprise would be more exciting; but, I'm sure a proposal would be exciting
enough (and it shouldn't be a shocking suprise but a pleasant one).

477.7Does he get an engagement ring?FSHQOA::VJORDANMon Feb 29 1988 21:1914
I just got a picture in my head of a man showing up down at his
local hangout, sporting his new engagement ring (a man's ring of
course, with a diamond in it, somewhat similar to a school ring).
He sits down at the bar, and puts his left hand up on the counter
moving in around conspicuously in conversatin so that his friends
will notice. Then somebody says, "Hey, JAKE!, Where'd you get that
ROCK?!" He smiles shyly and says, "I'm getting married!" Then
they all crowd around him oohing and ahing over the ring, telling
    him how lucky he is...

It's a very different concept, but I like it! Why not!

Well, I proposed last nightand was accepted. (I used the strategy Jon
suggested in .4.) But then we just keep proposing back and forth and
saying yes. This has been going on for about a year. We're getting
married in April, but it's fun to keep asking.

Well, my sister called last night - she and her SO got married
yesterday! This is a second marriage for both of them, and it
was sort of a sudden decision to do it on leap day, but they had
been planning to get married "sometime". The funniest twist is
that yesterday was the Rabbi's birthday - he was 15....

Gee, I proposed over a month ago, not even considering Sadie Hawkins'
    day.

All I did was start discussing the reasons why we should get married
(i.e., tax advantage in our particular situation, ability to share
various benefits by virtue of being a spouse as opposed to other
kinds of SOs, etc.) then asked him flat out to marry me. We're
    getting married in April too.

    re:.0

How would a man liked to be asked to marry? Well, how would *you*
like to be asked? Chances are, men would like to be asked in much
    the same way.

Of course, there's always the man who thinks it's the "man's job"
to do the asking, in which case, there's *no* good idea to ask him.

But what I want to know is: what the hell is the silliness about
women only proposing on Leap Year Day or even at any time during
Leap Year? Why can't (or shouldn't) women propose marriage at any
    time they feel like it?

Why should men be the only ones burdened with the "job" of proposing
marriage? Why shouldn't women have the "right" to propose marriage
any time they want to? Sheesh! It's not like these are the Dark
    Ages!
