458.0. "DALE CARNEGIE GRADS" by BIONIC::ROYER () Thu Jan 14 1988 19:08

"Many courses have been discussed in this conference but nothing
has appeared about the Dale Carnegie class.

As a graduate of this course, I would like to start his topic to
let graduates share how they utilize the principles after
graduations. Any non-Dale Carnegie grad is welcome to participate
freely.

For the benefit of those reading this topic and are not familiar
with the Dale Carnegie Course, perhaps a little background would
be helpful.

The Dale Carnegie Course is a 14 week, 3 1/2 hour per week course
dealing with human relations, stress management, positive attitude
development, self-confidence building, presentation sytle
development, goal setting, leadership development and meeting
conducting styles.

Now let's get started here. Anyone have any comments concerning
this philosophy or care to share how you effectively used the
principles taught?

    I'M A GRADUWIT!

For the effort in communications is exhaustive. One Minute Manager,
Facilitations Skills Workshop, Toastmasters, New Age Thinking, Business
Analysis Methodology, Self-Assertiveness, Effective Speech Writing,
    Interpersonal Communications Skills.

I have forgotten which principle belongs to which course. Many
of the courses sound like I sat through them already, but with
different faces. Yes, I have benefitted from them, but I have
also become weary of "new" techniques. But Dale Carnegie has been
around for a long time. It should perhaps be in the high schools
for all those budding businessmen who can't seem to get past their
    ahs and ya know's.

458.2I'd Do It Again....CIMNET::LMATTHEWSAMON & BOWIE's MAMAFri Jan 15 1988 15:2922
I took the course over eight years ago and I just can't say enough
about how much it has helped me in my career with Digital. It was
the best fourteen weeks I ever spent doing something I thoroughly
    enjoyed.

I was not working at DEC at the time but once I did I realized how
important many of the principles are. This is true in regards to my
home life as well. I can't say I practice everything I learned but I
usually can apply most of them. I used to be terrible at names. I
still use name association to this day.

I was asked to be an associate instructor after the class ended
but due to prior commitments I couldn't. In my pencil holder is
my "Human Relations Award" pencil from the course - a pleasant reminder.

I am not sure if DEC will pay for the course but I think everyone
    should take it.

My class size was over 25 but we all became so close no one really
wanted the sessions to end. Many of us still keep in touch.

I wouldn't mind taking the course again someday.

I am a recient grad from the course, as of last November. I am enjoying
many of the principals that I have learned. You must re-read the
books over and over sometimes. I am and am finding alot that I though
I have covered but was not there on my behalf. I am finding it is
working very well as I talk to the folks on the telephone who have
a lot of technical problems. Their emotions will get raveled into
the topics asked, unfortunatly. I am able to help them when I can
and send them off to seak other help with confidence on both parts
if they have reached the wrong number or if I have no sulutions
for them. I work at the DecDirect Add on Consulting Center. I am
also finding that the communications skills that I have learned
is enhancing my ability to communuicate with my own style intact.
That is I am a man who enjoys the humor of life, and it is great
to communicate this without hurting anyone or myself. I am also
in a parodox with my peirs, and have read another part in which
one sometimes must bend like the willow vs standing to fight like
the oak. I wish that I could communicate to them the senerio that
I see. Sometimes that is harder for they are closer too you than
the folks on the phone, and are maybe less forgiving due to the
fact that they have not taken the course and are suspisios that
I am or would be their mulipulating their lives.
Back to the real game of Dale Carnige, at first I was very
a show me type. I thought that I would be helping Lyndon LaRouch
campain with the enthusisam that I saw possesed here. I have learned
alot from this course!! I know that I will learn more!! Gotta keep
    rereading!!! And gotta keep practicing..

Where can I get information on this course?

I live in the Nashua, NH area and I have often wondered about this
course and just how effective it could be. Any info?

458.9Not an advertisement!BIONIC::ROYERWed Jan 20 1988 17:0117

Not wishing to make this topic an advertisement for the Dale Carnegie
Course ( though I admit I am very basis toward the course feeling
it is the very best most conprehensive course out) I will be happy to
answer any questions concerning where you can get information about
the course through E-Mail. Anyone is free to contact me at 264-6234
    or send mail via Bionic::Royer.

The thing that distinguishes this course from other courses of
this nature - and there are many - is that by vurture of its length
    (14) weeks, the ideas stick longer. You receive so much practice
during the 14 weeks, that it becomes a habit.

    - .8 I will send you mail.

458.10ANOTHER HAPPY GRADSAGE::PARNELLThu Jan 21 1988 16:4120
It has been quite some time since I took the course. It really
helped me develop skills that I use every day.

Presentation skills are used extensively at Digital and this course
will help anyone. It can't eliminate the associated nervousness
but will help in coping with it.

As noted earlier the course offers many skills and they all are
necessary to work in the Digital environment.

The skill that I needed the most was confidence and as you grads
know this course really can help in that area. You would never
know today that at one time in my life I was lacking confidence.

I currently have a 10 year old son that reminds me of myself when
I was his age. He has the lack of confidence that I had. I have
tried to work with him but I know it will take something like this
course to bring out the confidence in him. I really wish this was
a required course at the freshman level in high school.

    I are too.

It helped me grow. I'm still growing. I recent refresher helped
as well to reawaken lost dreams. The recent refresher was the 4
day "investment in excellence" DME course. Very different presentation
    same ideas.
