341.0. "Holiday Happiness" by KAOFS::D_BIGELOW (Amateur Analytical Analogous) Tue Jul 07 1987 16:51

    And...as a possible take-off from what's your Fantasy,
what's everyone going to do with their summer holidays, huh?

I know this note might be considered a little late considering
we are already into July, and some people have already taken
    theirs.

So, if you haven't taken holidays yet, what are YOU going
to do with your time, (or perhaps, what would you like to do
if you haven't yet made any commitments ?). If you've already
taken your holidays, what did you do ? Where did you go ?
    Tell us about it !

I'd like to make my contribution to begin with, but I don't
have time right now, I'll put it in tonight.

    					Happy Holidays !

    We're going to AUSTRALIA!!!!

My esteemed spouse has to spend part of the time at Australian DECUS,
but what the heck -- I think I can find something to do in Perth
while he's out giving Data Dictionary talks!

Then it's back to the novel -- whew. I can hardly wait.

341.2rapids ahead - hold onSAGE::PREVOSTJM PrevostTue Jul 07 1987 19:5935
Funny you should ask. My husband and I were just talking about
this last weekend. The question was "What was our favorite vacation?"
We both said at the same time "Grand Canyon!"

In 1983 we took three weeks off. The first week was great, beautiful,
fantastic, awe inspiring,............sorry got carried away. We
took a white water rafting trip down the Colorado. Ted Hatch was
the company and I would recommend them highly.

The canyon was so quite (except for those rapids up ahead - one
was approx. 1 mile long HOLD ON!). To sleep under the stars and
wake up to the sun playing across the canyon walls was breathtaking.
The daily hiking up some side canyons was enough to work up a thirst
for the Coors floating in a mesh back behind the raft. The raft
usually holds about 15 people but we were lucky and had a raft od
ten - the ten strangers on the first day were a very tight knit
group on the last (friendships that are still going). At the end
of the trip you are helicoptered out of the canyon and flown into
LasVegas - what a culture shock. I could go on forever about that
trip and if anyone is interested on more info contact me at
SAGE::PREVOST. In fact we are going again next year!

The second and third week of that trip was spend in Vegas and then
driving to San Diego and then up to San Francisco. Whew, what a
    long drive!

This year we are going to Hawaii (Maui and Kona) for two weeks.
If it is half as great as the Colorado then it will be worth it.

Thanks for the mini vacation while writing this!

341.3On a budget...at least this yearKAOFS::D_BIGELOWAmateur Analytical AnalogousThu Jul 09 1987 03:1765
O.K. I know I promised to enter my note earlier, sorry, real work
comes first.

Anyways, I'm kind of disappointed that there are only two
replies to my original note. Maybe lots of people are on holidays
right now who would normally respond to this conference. I hope
thats the case.

As for the previous entries, thank-you for your contributions.
Both of them sound extremely exciting and exhilerating.

By the way, for most of you who may have seen the few notes
that I've entered into this conference, my responses are usually
analyitical since I have an extreme love for psychology. I just
want this note and responses to be lots of fun. From the first
two entries, it looks like we're on the right track !

Vicki and I are taking a week in August for our holidays.
We're not going anywhere exclusive like Australia, or the Grand
Caynon because we can't afford it right now. We're saving up for
our honeymoon which will be in June /88.

This year, we're going to a place called "Canada's Wonderland",
which is just north? of Toronto Ontario, Canada. I've been there
before and think it's terrific. It's kind of like Canada's answer
to Disney World, but instead of Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse, there
is the Smurfs and Flintstones. The park is really geared for the
young ones, but it's a fun place to visit. The roller coasters are
INCREDIBLE. They have one that goes faster than 60 mph, and the ride
lasts for about 5 minutes. It's the fastest (and scariest) coaster
I've ever been on. They also have a stage set up for theatre during
the day, and turns into a rock and roll concert at night. When I
was there last I saw the "SPOONS". If you're unfamiliar with the
"SPOONS" they are one of Canada's leading rock groups. (By the way,
laster in August, I'm going to a concert that BOTH David Bowie
and Duran Duran are playing at.)

On the way home from Toronto we're going to do some
camping. There's one privately owned campground that we're
going to spend a few days at. It's an "au naturel" campground.
Neither of us have been to a place like this before, so we
don't really know what to expect, except the obvious I guess.
Re .1 - are you going to soak up the sun while your husband
attends decus ? I hear the Australian beaches are famous for this
type of thing.

On our honeymoon next June, we're going to a place called
Eden II in Jamaica. For anyone who has ever been to Hedonism II
in Jamaica, you'll be able to appreciate what Eden II would be like.
You pay one shot for everything before you go, and the only money
you have to worry about is spending money. Eden II has one main
difference from Hedonism. Eden II is a couples only resort. No
singles are allowed, sorry, however, Hedonism allows both singles
and couples but neither will allow children. The facilities each
has to offer is incredible; waterskiing, scuba-diving, big beaches,
horseback riding, tennis, golf (nearby), archery, and the list goes
on and on. I've got every travel brochure from almost every tour
company for the last 2 years. I can hardly wait !

Well that just about sums it up for me ! Now let's hear
what you're going to do for your vacation !

Happy Holidays,
Darrell

Having put off major vacations for years and years at a time, we're
finally planning to do some serious time-taking this summer. (Serious
to us, meaning at least a week; for some folks it isn't serious
unless they're gone for two or three weeks.)

I'm taking my husband to Wyoming to look over my old stomping grounds
and to visit Grand Teton and Yellowstone. This is the sort of trip
that involves lots of driving, and many comments of the nature of
"...and that's where we lived when I was in 5th grade, and this
is where my best friend from junior high used to live, and that's
the corner where I fell off my bike..." The narrator usually has
a great time reminiscing, and the narratee gets to smile and look
    interested.

    Should be fun, though!

341.5Sunbathing in the snow?KRYPTN::GENTRYThu Jul 09 1987 16:359
    Re: .1 & .3

Keep in mind that Australia has seasons 6 months offset from
ours in the northern hemisphere. So, although it is summer
here, it is mid-winter there. I don't think you'll be
doing much in the way of beach-like sunbathing.

    Re .5

You're right, it will be winter down there, but from what I've
been told, Australia never gets below 75 degrees in the winter.

I will be going to a far-off city, where I will leave my hotel
only to eat and do a little shopping. I will pass from one
over-crowded room to another, talk with a few hundred old friends,
and, in my spare time, strangers will give me money.

Translation: I'm going to the World Science Fiction Convention
in Brighton, England, but I will still be acting as treasurer for
the World Science Fiction Convention in 1989. (Wanna join?)

Then two of us will take the train to Cornwall, tour, and stay in
old inns. At the end, we'll spend a day or two in London doing
the usual things (except I'll make a pilgrimage to Liberty.)

341.8I'd rather escape the winter than the summerCADSYS::RICHARDSONThu Jul 09 1987 17:3515
We're not taking any vacation time this summer, so that we can get
away from the snow this winter; I can cope with the New England
summer weather! We're saving up to go to Curacao (Netherlands
Antilles) over Thanksgiving. Last winter we went back to the Galapagos
Islands over Thanksgiving, and we went to the South Pacific for
our fifth anniversary, so things are a bit tight right now!

We took our honeymoon at a convention in Dayton, Ohio, (really!)
so that we could go to Israel the next year.

I love to travel!!! When I was a kid, my family drove all over
the US (especially years when my dad was not teaching summer school),
so I've seen most of this country -- of course, driving around like
that was alot cheaper in those days when gasoline was cheap! I'd
rather travel than replace my several-year-old car, etc.
341.9Besides, I like skiingWEBSTR::RANDALLI'm no ladyThu Jul 09 1987 18:2423
re: Australian weather in the winter --

August is toward the end of winter in Australia.

The continent is about the same size as the continental US, but it's
considerably closer to the equator, so the weather in Sydney in August
is, I am told, very roughly comparable to the weather in Washington,
D.C., in late April. The weather in the Great Barrier Reef area will
be about like the weather in the Carribean in Feb. (It's hard to make
exact comparisons because the precipitation level differs so much.)

In fact, some tour books recommend August and September for visiting
the northern portions of Australia, since by November places like
Darwin can be up over a hundred degrees.

It does get colder than 75 degrees (I'm told there is great skiing
in the mountains north of Melbourne and Sydney), but it never gets
as cold as it does here.

This fall, my wife and I are taking our five-year-old son to Disneyworld. This
will be the first real vacation that we've been on since we were married, and
will be _my_ first honest-to-Ghod vacation since I moved out of my parents home
back in 1973! We're all looking forward to it; Iain (our five-year-old) is
only slightly less excited than I am, and he's telling everyone we meet!

It is going to be GREAT!

Well, after ten years in southern California, I have returned to
Europe. So I guess, I'll just enjoy Europe this summer. Planned
is: the island of Capri in August for two weeks, actually between
Capri and Naples, we have a big boat, and end of August or begining
September, it will probably be the islands in Yugoslavia and Greece
[Hvar, Krk(that's not a typo, it's the name), and most of the Greek
islands.]. Then no more vacation until Christmas when I go to Israel.
I think I'm going to enjoy Europe.

    and left with many friends!

re -1 - see ya there! We are planning on going at the same time.

This will be my first "real" vacation EVER. My family did
visit-the-relatives "vacations", and I've been in that rut ever
since. This time I'm not even stopping on the way back (they
suggested it when I told them we were going). Gonna stay in
a REAL hotel, eat at restaurants, and the object is to have FUN,
not to catch up on who had a baby and who got married, and not
to drive miles in a stuffy car. Though we *are* planning on
driving out to see the rockets and such, which I suppose is
"educational" but sounds like a blast....
