328.0. "all our children are above average" by YODA::BARANSKI (1's & 0's, what could be simpler?!) Tue Jun 23 1987 19:21

Surely most of you have heard from the Paire Home Companion:

"And that's the news from Lake Woebegon,

    Where the women are strong,
    The men are good-looking,
And the children are above average.
    Every single one of them."

So it seems to be with the DEC HUMAN_RELATIONS notes file readership... We all
seem to always be willing to throw in our kind word, and offer a shoulder to cry
on and a hug...

Are we really any different? Are we really the top n% of the Human Race?
Is this just a front? Are we hypocrites? Is it true, as one famous moderator
once said, 'we're liberaler then thou, you can't say that here...'?

Being Human means being imperfect, and dealing with our imperfections. How can
we do that if we can't admit our imperfections?

Me? I'll admit that I hate tipping, that at least half of the fault of my
divorce is mine, and that there are things or people that I'd die or kill for.

Me? I'm humbler then thou...

Disclaimer: No, I'm not just having a bad day. This note has only vague
resemblance to reality, and is meant to provoke thought, contrast, and humor,
but not flames...

I prefer to think of it as that this conference attracts a certain
kind of individual, those who are more caring and giving, or at
least those who recognize that they need and want the communication
with others. Those who don't fit this image probably avoid the
    conference.

In no way would I say that we are the "top" anything. But we do
have some common attributes, and I like what I see. I also disagree
somewhat with the concept that H_R readers are uniformly liberal.

Basically, those who write in H_R (and they are far outnumbered
by those who only read) are those willing to share, each in their
own fashion. Yes, from time to time we get some less-than-wonderful
notes, but these are a rarity, and your moderators try to keep it
    that way.

I'd also suggest that nobody who participates in this conference
considers themselves perfect. If they did, they'd not want to
associate with the rest of the "rabble".

Don't worry, I and a few others are busy counterbalancing

Paraphrased from a in-house parody of a dec ad (at least I hope
    it was a parody...):

"because we're digital, and they're not!"

I don't know how serious everybody is about this "Holier than thou"
attitude, I hope if anybody looks at themselves as superior to ones
around them they should take a closer look at them selves. I know
this is late but maybe somebody will read it. To those few people(I
hope they're few) I have one thing to say.
HUMBLE YOURSELVES, THE DAY MAY COME WHERE YOU WON'T
BE AS FORTUNATE AS YOU CURRENTLY ARE.

well, the way i look at it....
there are different points of superiority!

some of you are superior in "computerese" (programming,
    engineering....)

and some o you are superior in sports....
and some in what you remember about "things" (trivia...)
some are great at repeating what they've been taught by parents
    	and teachers and bosses...

but, when itcomes to awareness o what's really going on on this
planet....the fact that we're all just pawns in a giant monopoly
game being played by a handfull of rich and powerful people....
and being aware of how silly many pagan traditions are that are
so religiously followed by so many...
i'd have to say that lorna sthilaire and i are definitely superior
    to the rest of you.

there's a few who are equal to us on some issues
and some who lag a little behind us on many issues...

but for the most part, lorna and i are just head and shoulders
    above the typical deccie.

because.....there are things you can't learn in college...
and most people just stop learning about life (growing)
    after they graduate from college....

    ah Rik,

and I think I can call you a friend, or at least an aquantance
after a year of writing to you off and on....

there are also those of us who have explored our spiritual
side and found answers there that please us, does that make
us superior to you when you have only found answers there
    that displeased you?

I have found that even tho all my questions are not answered
and I do not accept many of the common answers, yet I still
find that Christianity answers more questions for me than any
    thing else I have encoutered....

can you accept a person with that point of view?

and have you adressed at all the alternate forms of expanding
spirituallity? such as thea-olgy, or sufi, or etc. etc. etc.

I personally fell that the human animal has three aspects...

the body, the mind or spirit and the soul. I think that we
in this generation place the most impression on the aspect
of the mind and the body and forget the rest of the human
    equation.

and I have chosen to stay with my husband inspite of all the
troubles we have had over twenty years, which is not to say
that our troubles were bad, but to say that, yes we had them
and we beat them. Youapproach to the problem of male-female
relationships is honest and valuable...just remeber that there
are a few weirdos out here, that are willing to be friends with
you and Lorna that don't always agree with you.
(and I think we love each other as much as
you and Lorna do :-) ) (and I am married to another bearded
    musician with a high forhead)
