293.0. "What's YOUR fantasy?" by VICKI::BULLOCK (Living the good life) Fri Apr 24 1987 14:51

    Hi folks--

Here's something to think about--what's your greatest (non-sexual,
please) fantasy? That is, what would you like to do (or be "when
you grow up") if you had all the necessary resources? We all have
goals of one kind or another in our lives; mostly practical ones.
This note is to share the *fun* goals.

For example, one of my favorite fantasies is singing blues on stage
---and in this fantasy I can have a voice like Billie Holiday/Linda
Ronstadt/Aretha Franklin if I want to. Another one (more attainable)
is to go up in a balloon, and drink champagne while drifting around
in the sky (and I'm not driving!). Another one is being a buyer/dealer
of antique jewelry and being first in to estate sales.

So how about you? What do YOU want to do??

    Have fun,

    Jane

I got one of my best fun fantasies three years ago when my husband
took me to New York City for the weekend of our fifth wedding
anniversary. We stayed at a suite in the Parker Meridien, had champagne
and pheasant under glass at Maurice without even thinking about the
bill, took a carriage around town . . . whew!

Growing up in Montana, which was not all that prosperous to begin
with and was economically depressed to boot, a weekend like this
in New York City seemed like the ultimate in glamor. And it lived
up to my expectations. I can hardly wait to do it again!

I'd like to have a huge Victorian style house on the ocean (I'm
not sure where. I'd have to think about that.) The house would
be filled with antiques and collectibles. Re .0, I also *love*
    antique jewelry.

I would have around 100 cats in residence at all times.

I would take a lot of trips and eventually travel almost all over
the world (except not Central America, the middle east, or Northern
Ireland, or South Africa, and probably not the Eastern European
countries either). I wouldn't want to travel in luxury, but not
hitchhiking with a backpack either. Just average tourist class
    stuff I guess.

I would earn my living by selling my oil paintings for enormous
    sums all over the world.

My SO would earn his living by being a lead guitarist in a world
famous rock band, writing and recording his own songs.

Before I have the chance to read and be influenced, I really want
to think about this one for a minute.

    I always thought I wanted....

But, now I am not quite sure. To get right to the point, I guess
the ideal fantasy would be for my children to live a happy and
fullfilling life that not only provided love and experience, but
the opportunity to see all, and the desire to participate and
    influence.

My children are my life right now - and always will be. If I could
see them understand the REASON for, instead of WHAT just happened,
then, I would feel like the greatest mother in the world.

I only hope that all other parents that have this fantasy/desire/dream
are able to get the comfort that this (I suspect) provides!

Anyone out there going to cheer us on?

I really like the way things are going right now and this fantasy
has turned out very interesting so far. I've fantasized about a
LOT of things...being famous by singing, dancing, acting, or
leading a revolution...or travelling in spaceships, seeing other
planets, or knowing how to fly wherever I want. But when it comes
    right down to it, I'm really enjoying where I am and what I'm doing;
what an adventure! Perhaps I will have other opportunities to
experience all of these things at one time or another. Keep on
    dreamin'!

My fantasy is my frustration: If only people could *understand*
what they're *doing*!!! Like making people understand, and change,
their ways when they're destroying the earth. My world-scale
fantasy is that things are clean and new again - that we have the
purity we started with along with the knowledge we have now, plus
the urge to keep the world pure. If people could only find a way
to be rich and prosperous and comfortable without it being at the
    expense of the world.

My personal fantasy, currently, is to win the Ms. America body-

I think one of my all-time favorite fantasies is to have a home on a
multi-acre heavily-wooded area, with a clearing for gardening, and
perhaps a stream or lake nearby. The house would be of wood and mostly
natural materials, blending with the surroundings. The home would have
a good kitchen, filled with the scent of herbs and good food, a room
in the basement for home-canned goods, a good workshop for repairs and
projects, comfortable bedrooms for family and guests, and a large porch
or balcony with a view. To round it off, a spouse, several children,
and a couple of large dogs (golden labs would be fine, thanks).

I've resisted putting any fantasies in here, but...

I guess that you could say that one of my fantasies is to find a tall Irish
woman with long black hair who enjoys singing, dancing, playing music, Science
Fiction, 'good for you' food, history, new ideas, lots of romance and love
making, Christian spirituality, and anything else that sounds like fun at the

How odd... I never thought I had an image of a "perfect woman" engraved in my

Another fantasy is to be a world-famous photographer, picking and

a European castle nestled in a lush, green mountain valley. A
picturesque village in the Swiss Alps, or the quiet beauty of a desert

varied and hauntingly beautiful reef off Australia, teeming with
underwater plant and animal life. From the quiet majesty of an
underwater wreck in the Carribean to the beauty of the scarcely clad
inhabitants of the island of Ibiza. Or just perhaps...if I'm really

Who ever said "money doesn't buy happiness"?
I know that what I would like is a lot of money, tonnes of money,
mountains of money, and than I would decide what I would like to
do with it. Probably buy a few properties where I could enjoy life
with my friends and family, a few boats to sail and cruise around
the seas, probably just really enjoy life with my friends and family.
Let me not for get an airplane to travel, and a few other things
    of life's necessities.
I can enjoy life very well with the money I now have, and I manage
to do most of the things I really want to do, but I know I wouldn't
spit on a few billion dollars (tax free).
Do be reassured, my fantasies do go a little deaper than money,
but I think that globaly it fits well. With tonnes of money, I could
make all my other fantasies come true.
293.67money'd be niceGNUVAX::QUIRIYNoter DameWed Jun 10 1987 21:2917

I could go into detail about my fantasies. I have a couple of
"old standards" which are dragged out and brought back to life every
so often -- one revolves around moving to Adelaide, Australia, and
the other revolves around taking a year to live the simple life as
a hotel desk clerk (or some such) for a meagre wage, plus room and
board, on the island of Barbados. These are the most detailed. I
have another, which has net yet been fully-fleshed-out, about owning
a bookstore or other small business and living in a small community
(like New Shoreham, on Block Island, Rhode Island), far away from
fast food joints, discount department stores, new furniture, snappy
cars, career ambitions and corporate ladders.

I'd like tons of money though. Money doesn't buy happiness, it's
true, but I'd rather be rich and miserable than poor and miserable.

    I couldn't resist this one!!

    My fantasy's are:

    1. To be more outgoing when meeting new people. It takes me a while
to overcome the 'fear'. Sometimes it's too late and I miss a
       lot of great opportunities.

    2. Once I can resolve number 1. I move to my next fantasy and that
is being a stage actress, no one famous, my husband and mother
say I have ALL the qualitites required.

    3. To be able to afford a house. I don't want to buy a house and
struggle to pay for it the rest of my life. I want to be able
to buy it, fix it up the way I want it, have the grounds cared
for (by someone, unlike me, who won't kill every green thing)

    4. To have more time with my daughter and to get rid of the fear
that I'm making mistakes in raising her. ( 'oh, why did I handle
that this way...now she'll be scarred for life!!') I guess just
to be more comfortable with her and myself.

I guess that's it. These are not in any particular order. I'd
be happy with accomplishing one or two.

to the present. I'd then take them on a tour of the 20th century

be enough to blow their mind!

One of my fantasies was played out a little during the movie "Back to the
Future".

I would like to take my car [a 1985 Chrysler Laser XT turbo w/electronic
everything] and a van back 30-100 years [I'm never quite sure how far back
to go].

In the van, I would pack all the electronics gear I have. This includes
computers, compact discs, stereo gear, 27" COLOR tv, videotapes, etc. If
possible, I would LOOOOVE one of those Kloss wall-projection systems.

I would ride around the towns [in a car the likes of which the locals would
never have dreamed of] advertising a new technology showcase.

I would then bring people into a house [how I get it is still up in the
air] or theater of some sort. I would demonstrate digital music
[Stravinsky, Holst, something vaguely familiar] and run through the ages
right up to current rock and roll. The concept of a cd would be soooo
foreign, the look on their faces would be priceless.

Then, the coup-d'etat. The lights go down, the curtains part and a
documentary [from around 1978] on science fiction movies and tv series
would introduce the people to the concept of space travel and the like.
After a segue, I would start the main attraction - Star Wars.

I would love to see the look on people's faces as they look at something
unimaginable. Then to follow it up [in time] with The Empire Strikes Back
and Return of the Jedi. Maybe show some of the best adventure flicks, some
Bond movies, that kind of thing.

What I would also hope to do is generate some wonder in some stoic people.
try to show them the promise of the future. Granted a lot of people have
that now, but there are a lot of others who are pessimistic.

Maybe my real fantasy is to have someone like me from 100 years from now
travel back and tell me what's coming, just as I'd like to do to our
historical relatives.

if you tried something like this. Also, your status would
drop instantly when you admitted that you personally could neither
explain how the things worked nor build a new one.

There have been many science fiction stories on this theme. One
of my favorites involves a physicist who decided to take a pocket

    A fantastical fantasy -

I'd like to be able to fling as described in the McGill Feigan
novels by Kevin O'Donnell. Flinging is the ability to teleport
yourself and/or a limited amount of extras (people, luggage, etc...)
from where you are to any place you've been before and can picture
in your mind ar anywhere you can currently see.

    A realistic fantasy -

I'd like to learn to hang glide and then do it well enough to
to glide from Glacier Point in Yosemite. Glacier Point gives you
an almost immediate 3000 foot altitude over the valley. People
have glided from there and I believe they still do.

You don't have to go to the Bahamas to swim with a Dolphin. You
can do that in Florida. I recall reading an article in the Travel
section of the Boston Globe about a month ago where you could swim
with dolphins in Florida. I don't recall the specific locations
    though.

As a side note, while I was out on a sunset dinner cruise off
the coast of Maui (heaven on earth!) a group of Dolphins swam along
side of our boat for some time. It was really neat having all these
Dolphins dart in and out of the water. They looked so peaceful
and joyful that I wanted to jump in and swim with them.
