274.0. "Personal_names..." by SHIRE::SLIDSTER (Finally gettin' there...) Mon Apr 13 1987 07:34

Isn't it strange how life is constantly changing ?

Several months ago, I had reached the depths of despair after my
marriage broke up. Through friends both in and out of DEC I discovered
NOTES, found this and several other conferences which I actively
participate, moved into a new apartment, rebuilt many broken bridges
with my family and generally started putting it all back together.
I took a job that caused me to be seconded to Geneva in Switzerland
for 3-4 days a week and I spend every other weekend rediscovering
what a beautiful 4 year old daughter I've got.

I have also been lucky to have the opportunity to share my feelings
with all of the H_R noters and hopefully pass on some advice to
    others in similar situations.

During this period, my Personal_name was "still hangin' in there"
because that's how I felt. Now, another change has come upon me
in the shape of a "close encounter of the female kind". It has made
a great difference to my life and while it is early days, my new
found friend has brought some meaning and direction back into my
life and fills my thoughts every day with sunshine. So much so,
I've dropped "still hangin' in there.."

This is more of a statement than a NOTE in the true sense - I thought
it might bring a little hope to the "lonelies" out there - I
discovered, much to my surprise, that it doesn't last forever !

Does my change of Personal_name denote a turning point ? Does your
Personal_name reflect your mood/personality ? I feel so good about
getting rid of "still hangin' in there...."

    be lucky,

    Steve

Maybe there is something to that stuff. My brother always shakes
his head after talking to me for a while and says "Boy, are you
'out there'" I know that we don't really live in the same "world",
and sometimes it irks him, Me, I am amused by it.

Believe it or not, mine reflects the present situation, not a
mild-mannered evasion. See, I used to work for DEC for 6 1/2 years,
and then I left to pursue a career as a novelist, only right now
I'm done with the first one and not really started on the second
one, so I'm taking advantage of the gap to go earn some $$$ so I
took a contract job with DEC in my old department (anybody still
with me?) only my husband already has an account on the cluster
I work on, and SCHUTZMAN is hard enough to type without making it
B_SCHUTZMAN or something like that, so I decided to use my maiden
name, only now everybody asks me if this means we're separated,
    so . . . .

274.21misery IS optionalFELIX::GKLEINBERGERmisery IS optionalThu Apr 16 1987 00:4825
Mine means I have just come off of 3 full years of complete misery,
and only a short while ago (year maybe?), did I realize that the
only one who could change that is ME. I now THINK I am a better
person, I went on a diet, lost some weight, gained some self esteem,
gained a promotion, and realized that I DID have control over my
life, and I was the only one making it miserable! Yes, a LOT of
people were contributing to the fact, but I was letting them. Now
nobody does anything to me that I don't agree to first, and I don't
let them get the upper hand ANYMORE! A side note was that I changed
my personal name for a short while, and I received more mail asking
me to change it back... Kinda made me feel good.

    Gale

P.S. Remember that any buckets of guilt that you are carring can
be put down. They are really a very heavy load to carry. Once you
put them down, don't let anyone pick them up and give them to you,
or don't let anyone notice you don't have any anymore and have them
try to give you theirs.... A simple "No thank-you, I put my down
    already" will do!!!!!!

P.S.S. Re - 1... We will NEVER be sure what we do is right. Take
your time with the decision - you have a life time to live it out
    - there is no hurry... By the way, I care!

It sounds like an attitude of guarded pessimism, doesn't it?

Actually. My friends were using the phrase "Don't panic." from
_The_Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy_ around me long before I
found out where it came from, so I did not feel the attachment
to it that they did. When I encountered situations where people
were getting upset, and I needed information from them, I'd
use it to assure them that they could be calm -- just for a
little while -- because there would be enough time to panic later.

    Sometimes it would even help.

Mine comes from the song by the Mama's and the Papa's. True, I like the song
alot but more because it reminds me of a vacation I took two years ago out
in LA and San Diego. I really loved it out there. I love warm weather, vol-
leyball, and people watching, and all three of those are very popular out
there!

As an aside about the people watching, I was amazed at the broad range of
people found out there. One of my favorite quotes -- which I can't for the
life of me remember where I heard it -- goes: "Living in California is like
living in a bowl of granola -- what ain't fruits or nuts is flakes."!!! ;-)

274.45from "hasten slowly" to ...LEZAH::BOBBITTa collie down isnt a collie beatenWed Dec 02 1987 13:5014
my current personal name is taken from the old "Lad" books (akin
to Lassie...) When the dog was facing the worst of trouble - sorely
injured, scraping on its belly towards the only light in the forest,
striving to survive, after facing harrowing fights and awful weather
an abandonment and confusion and hunger and any other number of
catastrophes - suddenly the collie would find a burst of energy,
attain the cabin where safety and food and healing and a warm human
awaited....hence (abbreviated to fit in the field, of course)

But a collie down is not a collie beaten.....

It kinda reflects how I feel lately...

I usually don't use a p_name, but in the spirit of the season,

about the collie - I'm allergic but I think they're great. Very
stalwart with a lot of stick-to-it-iveness. Something I envy.
The personal name choice was between that and:

Recoco cola - it's surreal thing.

whoever wants to use the above personal_name suggestion is welcome to
it, as I think the collie bit describes what I'm hoping to achieve in
    the near future: perseverence.

274.49SIMUL8::RAVANThu Dec 03 1987 14:3317
I don't usually use personal names, because I get bored with them
too quickly - or I forget they're there, and get embarrassed when
seeing them on an official mail message or note!

However, for the last month or two I've been cycling through a bunch
of them, mostly lines from Springsteen songs, but one or two that
were quotes from or references to my favorite TV show. (For that
matter, the Springsteen all related to it, too...)

It was often a real problem to come up with a meaningful phrase that
fit within the VAXnotes header, and eventually I ran out, so I've given
p-names up for the moment. The most terse was "Life ain't a hatshop,"
which came from WISEGUY; it meant that it isn't always useful to think
of people in terms of "the good guys wear white hats and the bad guys
    wear black hats."

I'll open a related question, If you wanted to change your name
be it first last or in between. What name would you pick?

        Names are a funny object.
        They carry different weights.
They mean different things to differing people.
        They are assigned!
They bring different images with them.
They link the past, and add a hook to the future.
They are what we become or become different because.
        They associate sex with gender.
        They conflict with each other!

My personal name in notes comes from Tracy Chapman... Its the last song
on her new album.. when I first heard the song, I didn't like it...
but, as it played more and more... it really is true, no matter what
happens to you in life - never sell your soul to anyone... cuz that's
really all that you have that is really yours...

My mail personal name comes from Miracle on 34th Street...

FAITH, is believing in things when Common Sense tells you not to...

They were talking about Santa Claus, but I thought it really was a lot
more than just Santa Claus... as Christmas comes and has becomes so
commercialized, we sometimes forget that what we are celebrating is the
birth of Jesus Christ. That takes a lot of faith to believe - even when
people say no, that common sense says not too...

My notes personal name is from a new Rush song called "War Paint",
which talks about how so many people see "what we want to see". The
term "War Paint", of course, is directed at make-up, but I think it
refers as well to clothes and all the other surface things we put on to
    make us "different". *But*:

"to the beautiful and the wise
    	 the mirror always lies"

Mail personal name "All of us get lost in the darkness Dreamers
learn to steer by the stars" is from a song by the same group, same CD,
called "The Pass". It talks about suicide (I find it interesting how
many times something in real life reminds me of a note which has just
been started up in here!). The quote above is intended to remind
people who consider suicide that the things they're feeling are common
to us all. It's a very powerful song.

As far as Quiss could make out in the grey gloom, from the vats large
overhead buckets scooped up grey, viscous fluid, which was poured into
    moulds on conveyor belts which disappeared into long, hissing machines;
at the far end of the machines the moulds were stripped off the grey
sculptures which were then minion-handled or trolleyed to another
conveyor belt which led into the pounding machine in the centre of the
    room...

"What in hell's name is this?" Quiss said incredulously, choking on the
    dust.

"This is dee pee," the attendant said primly. "This is the nerve
centre of the entire castle. Without us, the whole place would simply
grind to a halt." It sounded proud.

"Are you _sure_?" Quiss said, coughing. The minion stiffened.

"Have you any other questions?" it said coldly. Quiss was looking at
    the sculptures. They were funny shapes: 5, 9, 2, 3, 4...

"Yes", he said, "what are those meant to be?"

"This is the number-crunching room. Those are numbers," it said,
enunciating clearly as though for some small and wilfully obtuse child,
"and this is where we _crunch_ them. That machine is a
    _number-cruncher_."

"What do you make the numbers out of? What's that grey stuff?"

"Plaster of Salt Lake City." Quiss frowned.

    "What the hell's that?"

"It's like Plaster of Paris, except duller," the minion said, then
turned and stamped off through the drifts of grey powder.

Hello,

My 'personal' is very important to me, it represents my
whole approach to life.

Poohbear has it right for me, if you don't agree try reading
the Pooh stories once (more) and see (well at least try)

Basically he is very simple, he values love and friendship
(is there any difference, really). He has basic values that are
easy to forget in the pressures of 1990...

Pooh: Rabbit's clever
Piglet: Yes Rabbit IS clever.
Pooh: ...and he has Brain.
Piglet: Yes, Rabbit DOES have Brain.

[Long Silence]

Pooh: I suppose...that that is why he never understands anything!

Don't get me wrong, I think being clever is valuable, but Pooh has a
point (for me at least).

Best ...Trevor
