59.0. "A HUMAN_RELATIONS party!!!" by QUARK::LIONEL (Reality is frequently inaccurate) Fri Sep 05 1986 03:12

I've been amazed to watch the growth of the readership of this
conference in the short time I've hosted it on QUARK. When I
started, we'd have maybe 2 or 3 readers at a time, but nowadays,
it can be up to TWENTY simultaneous readers. (How do I know this?
The NOTES server changes its process name to reflect the number
of connections.) It's not too surprising that the number of
writers hasn't quite kept pace, but there are a lot of interested
    people out there.

Anyway, there is this phenomenon that Tamzen referred to in another
note known as "noters parties", where a bunch of people whom, so
far, had only had electronic contact, could see and talk to each
other in person. I've never attended one of these specifically
(save a dinner in honor of a famous noter), and there's a whole
conference devoted to the topic: MTV::NETPARTY.

I'd been thinking for a while that it would be nice if the
HUMAN_RELATIONS "family", at least those in the "Nashua-Marlborough
corridor", could get together and see what all these wierd people
look like. I've never organized anything like this, so I'd like
comments and suggestions (including those who say "Forget it!").
I don't have anything fancy in mind, but I think we could probably
attract 20-30 noters at least. We'd have food, beverages and
    (not too loud) music.

    What do people think?

I would be willing to have a party at my home in Maynard some
friday/saturday night in october. Besides the usual people things
that occur at a party I can also offer pingpong, air hockey, darts,
music, tv/vcr's/movies(some befitting this notes file) as well as
the area to handle 30-35 people(excluding b.r.'s). All I would need
is to make it byob (drinking laws???since I don't know tolerance
of all participants) and maybe ask everyone to bring a snack/hor
d'oeuve. I am single and have 3 male room mates who enjoy a good
party so no problems having it.

If people would like to do it here, please note in your replies.

Sounds terrific. Just what I need: an excuse to cook!!! :-)
Could we make it a Saturday so I can have time for cooking and
so Don could come too if he wants to?

Also, could someone give some motel/hotel references relatively
near the party (it's close to 1 1/2 hours from our home) and I would
just as soon not face that drive after a party!!!

A HUMAN_RELATIONS Noters Party sounds like a GREAT idea!! I'd love
to go and meet some of you I haven't already met at other NOTERs
Parties and whose REPLYs in this conference have impressed me!!
No problem doing BYOB, and some munchies to go with them. October
sounds fine for me, but if preferences are in order, Saturday is
better, and Oct. 4 and 18 are best on my end (since my ex has the
kids those nights ;-) ). Thanks for being willing to host such
    a get-together!!

Can we discuss notes or even have hard copy of same?

If so, does this preclude bringing S.O.s, since they may not be
DECcies?

October 4 is good for me too, for the same reason as Joe Mozer.
I don't see a problem with bringing SOs. I'd like to have it on
    the Saturday.

As for a balance - while that would be nice, the idea here is for
the noters to meet, no matter what ratio of genders we have. If
you're specifically "cruising", you might do better to check out
Singles Night at Purity Supreme (next Wednesday in Chelmsford) :-)

    re:.11

the intent of my mentioning a balance was to try and prevent some
situations that I have heard mentioned of get togethers where the
females felt intimated by the ratio and left the party feeling like
a punching bag. Certainly didn't mean to imply a one to one ratio.

I don't intent that the party be a singles cruise but an opportunity
for everyone to meet in a somewhat neutral arena to have a good
time, be it to strike up a friendship or get into heavy discussion
re: human relations - a reasonable balance I think allows for a
    better rounded situation.

summation - let the cards fall where they may - the important thing
will be to have a good time for everyone for whatever reason that
    they come.

59.15weekend days = someone will get left out...YODA::BARANSKINothing to Need, Hide from, or Fear...Fri Sep 05 1986 17:245
One problem with a weekend party, is that for the next couple of months, DEC's
Canobie Lake outings are every weekend day. In particular TWO's is Oct 4.! And
I would *really* like to make the party.

Jim.

Gimme a break! Canobie Lake? What about the people who'll be going
downtown for a ride on the Swan boats? Or for a tour of Heberts Candy
Mansion? Then there's always Sturbridge Village and the Wayside Inn?

Besides, who needs carnival rides when you've got a keg of your
favorite brew? Actually, for the AA folks out there, I noticed a new
label of beer in the stores yesterday: Non-Alchoholic Guiness Stout.

Canobie closes at 5, and I'm SURE the party will still be active
through the evening. In fact, I'd say that though we could probably
open at 2-3 for outdoor activities, the real thing won't start till
    about 6.

And I'd like to see more parties - I've already heard from one

    Well, a couple of questions:

1.) What type of music will there be? I am getting a little tired
of going to noters party, when you can't hear the person who is
standing right next to your ear shouting at the top of your lungs.
I go home with an earache and a headache. It really does spoil
the fun, even if it is a good time. Can we set an expectation before
hand, that if there is music, that it will be a gentle tone? Even
the last outdoors party I went to (HI Corky!) the music was so loud
you could not escape from it.

2.) If this is going to be in a house, what are we going to do
with smoking? I realize that it is unfair to restrain people who
enjoy this wicked horrible nasty awful habit[:-)], but in a smaller
house, smoke can get very thick very quickly, especially if we have
a large amount of people. Is there an upstairs/downstairs type
situation where we can restrict some of the smoke?

3.) Kids - I would not bring mine, but there are some people who
do, do we want to allow kids?

As it stands right now, I plan on being there, maybe I can convince
Bob to give up a weekend night to go to 8-). What day did you say
    it was 8-)??????

59.27A couple of answersQUARK::LIONELReality is frequently inaccurateSat Sep 06 1986 04:0823
If I have anything to say about it, the music will be in the
background. We're there to talk and socialize - we can listen to
loud music anytime. If Al doesn't have a CD player, I have a Sony
D-5 and will bring that plus my CDs - I have a wide assortment of
Moody Blues, Dire Straits, Yes, Pink Floyd, Billy Joel, etc. I
encourage others to bring favorite discs too (but put your name
    on the cases).

As for smoking, my preference would be that there is no smoking
in the main gathering area or kitchen. People who need to smoke
can probably go outside - the weather should be ok.

As much as I like kids, I don't think this particular party will
    be appropriate for them.

As for alcohol - please make sure that at least one driver in your
party stays sober. Myself, I'm not a big drinker, so I'll volunteer
to drive people home or wherever within a reasonable distance.
I'm sure we can locate "crash pads" for anyone who needs them.

This is shaping up to be a fun event. I'm really looking forward
    to it!

Oooops!

Bad news folks! My in-laws will be coming into town from the
27th to the 4th so I may have to ask for a rescheduled date of the 11th
or some other time. Ordinarily it probably wouldn't matter, but they
are from Rockford Illinois, and they only get out this way once a year
or so (in other words, I blow them off and I'm dead meat).

What would everyone say to the 11th or 18th? Sorry about this,
I thought they'd be gone by then because they were arriving in "mid to
late September" and will only be here a week.

       other ???'s

         smoking - I am a smoker so:

                     the house is two levels
top level has l.r. d.r. and kitchen with
deck off d.r. - backyard has 2 bug killers
and weather should be sufficiently cool
                            that bugs are gone.

lower level has family room, workshop area
                           and garage

so how about smoking in lower level and on deck?

music: I have a stereo and a decent collection of cassettes
which includes oldies (50's,60's,70's) and some current
(no punk - yech). I would prefer to keep sound down
due to my wearing a hearing aid. Stereo is in living
                   room.

vcr's are in both living room and family room

air hockey and darts in the workshop area, ping pong in the
           garage.

grille is gas fired and on deck

I think I heard some one volunteer beer - I have special
ways for keeping kegs cold(practice makes perfect). Otherwise
can we try to keep beer to cans(no glass) - don't have to
worry about broken/getting cut on slivers. Glass ok on wine
           coolers and wine.

backyard has volleyball, horseshoes, lawn darts, badminton,
and small pool(probably will be too cold)

I am last house on patti lane (dead end) - Please park on
street but do not block my neighbors driveways

MY house is no mansion but it is my castle. The furnishings
are some new, some old, some antique and although we enjoy
it, it will never get into Better Homes and Gardens or into
a home decorators magazine, it is comfortable and casual.
Some parties I have had have born a faint resemblance to animal
house others more sedate, but all my friends DO enjoy partying
          here.

Ok, unless I hear a lot of objections, we're on for the 18th.

I'm unsure what to do about food. Having everyone bring something
is common, but in my experience it ends up with a lot of one kind
of food and not enough of another, usually the main course! Perhaps
we can coordinate something. I don't yet have a good feel for the
number of attendees, but it seems like fewer than 20 have responded
    so far. Suggestions are welcome.

Please NO LIVE entertainment 8-| !!!!

The last several parties have been RUINED by the music being way
too loud, and VERY unreasonable, and one of those was
    live-entertainment.

I for one will be very upset to know I have driven 90+ miles, just
to have to turn around again and go home because you can't enjoy yourself
because the music is spoiling the whole party.

I *think* what Mike had in mind was relatively quite acoustic
stuff --- folk and soft rock, for instance --- not a rock band.

Still, I agree that I'd rather have the music be on the stereo
    and the people be socializing.

59.44Since I complained about the loud music at Sheraton Boxboro...JUNIPR::DMCLUREVaxnote your way to ubiquityTue Sep 09 1986 15:4629
It sounds like Al's house might be big enough (two levels) to have
one area be predominantly music, and another predominantly conversation.

From the sound of it, I doubt if Al would even be able to have music
as loud as was experienced at the Sheraton Boxboro going away party for
U.O.B. From my experience, when things get that loud, usually some neigh-
bor will call the cops and quiet things down in a hurry.

I have been to alot of parties in my day (mostly at friends houses),
and I can't remember one which didn't at least have a sterio with some
kind of music playing. Music can have a real soothing effect when the
"DJ" is able to read the audience correctly.

I think that we'd be real lucky to also get a little live entertainment,
but (while I have been known to occasionally play loud "acid" rock on my
electric guitar in certain settings) I think that some sort of acoustic
instruments would be more appropriate. Maybe I'll even bring a juice-harp
and we could have a good old rockin' time! By the way, I don't claim to
have any musical talents whatsoever, so if someone who does is volunteering
to play for the party, then I would think this would be a more viable sol-
    ution.

As to where the music should be in order to isolate it somewhat from
the rest of the party, I would suggest lumping all of the potentially
offensive (noise and air polluters) into the same room. Most musicians I
know (including myself - although I'm not a musician per-se) can usually
handle cigarette smoke, so I would think that this might work out best.

I've recently sent out a mailing to everyone who has said that
they'd like to attend the party, either by replying to this note,
or by sending mail to me or Al. If you don't receive it, that
likely means I don't know you want to come. I really need to
know so I can distribute information about the party and have a
notion of how many people will be there.

To date, I have 29 noters and guests on my list. A few have said
that they'd like to bring a guest. That's ok, but remember that
this party is primarily for H_R noters to meet. Please let me know
if you think you'll bring a guest.

I won't be using the notesfile to post info about the party (unless
it is something that everyone should know) - I'll use MAIL. So
if you haven't heard from me, send me mail.

BTW, maps will be distributed a week before the party.

Just catching up... 18-Oct looks good for me. I've enjoyed gatherings
of noters from a couple of different files, and look forward to this
one.

On the subject of music, it won't be "entertainment" and it won't be
loud, so may I suggest: time was when many of the parties I attended
included a bit of group singing. One or more people would bring guitars
(folk/acoustic) and those interested would suggest songs, sing, or just
listen. Yes, terribly "sixties-ish". Anyone interested?

The limit of 50 (which was actually up to 52, but we've had

Anybody like college football? I just learned that my Alma Mater
(The U. of Iowa Hawkeyes) and the Michigan Wolverines will be playing
next Saturday. Iowa is rated 10th and Michigan is rated 4th by one of
the polls (I forget which), and this game would pretty-much rap up the
Big Ten winner this year and ultimately go to the Rose Bowl! Aside from
that, it's probably just another football game to most people.

Anyway, I just thought I'd see what sorts of reactions I'd get
(ahead of time) about devoting a TV room somewhere's in the house to
the game? Then again, what time does this party start anyway, maybe
I'll just show-up after the game...?

I too think the party was a fantastic success! I counted 32 guests
    - which means about 1/3 couldn't make it for various reasons. That
ended up being a very comfortable number - it was busy but not
too crowded. Lots of good conversations, and even a game of
Illuminati downstairs ("Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean
they aren't out to get you.") I did notice, though, towards the
9th inning of the baseball game that the upstairs was fairly empty,
most people being downstairs catching the final minutes of the game.
A big cheer went up when Boston won, and then things returned to
    normal!

There was LOTS of good food - people really did express some
creativity. I couldn't begin to list everything there - so all
I can say is THANKS to all - it was DELICIOUS!

My special thanks to Al Flood for lending us his very nice house

Well, sort-of. I'm real sorry we couldn't make it, I was so looking
forward to coming. As it turned out, a couple of nasty twists of fate
prevented us from attending (neither of which had much to do with the
    Hawkeye loss to Michigan 20-17).

My Great Grandfather (Papa Deal) died Friday night. He had just
turned 99 a week ago and had a big Birthday party, so I think he died
a happy man. We thought seriously about heading down to Alabama for the
funeral on Sunday, but flights were somewhat hectic on such short notice,
and so we didn't go (although my Parents are down there now - they drove
    from Iowa).

Anyway, determined to drown my sorrows and get psyched-up for the
party at Al's, I started drinking shortly after lunch on Saturday morning.
This strategy seemed to be working pretty well, I was able to shurg-off
the loss to Michigan fairly easily. The problem didn't occur until
(hampered by sneezing from our friend's cat), I took an alergy pill to
relieve my nose. Well, that was all she wrote. I took a trip to the
bathroom where I proceeded to get violently ill, and then I spent the rest
of the evening passed-out on the couch.

By the time I woke up, it was after midnight and I felt like I'd been
hit by a truck. Needless to say, we didn't make it to the party. I feel
pretty bad about the whole weekend, hopefully I won't be so "preoccupied"
for the next party. I hope everbody else had a good weekend.

59.91The party was greeeaaaaatttt!!!!!NFL::JALBERTTue Oct 21 1986 12:3612
Al, Steve, and all of you,

Thanks for letting me come to the party. I'm new to notes and you made
me feel at home. I enjoyed the party and enjoyed meeting everyone.
You're a nice bunch of folks. The party was *great* and the food was
*delicious* (but I ate too much!). Al, I enjoyed our air hockey
match. Never got the scoop on who won Illuminiti. Who won?

    Thanks again!

59.92The Computer Network Controls *everything*!YODA::BARANSKILead, Follow, or Get Out Of The Way!Tue Oct 21 1986 13:0829
The Burmuda Triangle easily got the first seven alignments, but missed out on
the ripe plum of the SemiConcious Liberation Army (alignments: Communist,
Weird, Violent, Criminal, Liberal). The Mad Scientists never completed the
Orbital Mind Control Lasers.

The Burmuda Triangle spent most of the time lying back and worrying about the
Gnomes of Zurich piling up all the world's money. A needless worry in today's
world, because if someone has money, they are expected to spend it; putting the
Gnomes further from their goal of hoarding all the worlds money supply.

The UFOs were just sort of 'there' for most of the game, without many holdings,
and then suddenly we had to worry about them taking over the world with all
their Weirds.

The Bavarians quietly and steadily accumulated money and power, untill they had
a chance to win. Then Zurich foreclosed on them and shredded their power
structure.

The Network had a constant battle the entire game fighting over transferable
power with The Burmuda Triangle. ( IRS, Phone Co., Big Media, US Snail, ...)
After the Bermuda Triangle fought off all the opposition from the rest of the
world to grasp at the IRS (Criminal Government) and get their last alignment,
Criminal and failed, inches away from world domination (if only I'd transfered
that last few megabucks...), The Network won by tearing the Big Media from the
Burmuda Triangle..

Does that answer the question? :-)

Jim.

All this sounds great...but time, she marches on!

    Any new get-togethers planned?

(I'm new to H_R notes; tho have been active in FELINE and a large
number of *work!* related notesfiles for some time. With any luck,
one of the next notes I read as I plod on through will answer my
    question...)

You'll all just have to wait a while for an invite to my annual
Ground Hog Day Brunch (a real extravaganza, going on since the
early 70's, in honor of our family religion, of course).

Hey! I think that a HUMAN_RELATIONS party is a GREAT idea! There
are alot of people in the worlds (that wasn't a typo) that would
like to meet and be with people that care, such as the ones in this
    conference.

I live in Lowell and I'm up for it. If there is one would someone
    please elet me know......IKE::BUCUVALAS.
