48.0. "Real Human Relations Introductions " by JETSAM::HANAUER (Mike Hanauer, 223-5991, PKO1/F3) Tue Aug 26 1986 20:45

Have been reading Human_Relations for a while now, but just signed in.

Noticed something interesting: When people introduce themselves, they
rarely say much; and what is said is often little more than name and
position at Digital. This seems especially strange since this
conference is oriented toward people issues among individuals.

WHY NOT TELL US WHO YOU ARE AS A PERSON AND TO YOURSELF so that the
introductions are a bit more meaningful.

There are possible reasons I guess:
	People sometimes define themselves by their jobs.
	It's "easier" to just state the facts, and not think about yourself.
	Maybe even Notes introductions make people anxious.

    I agree, and it's also why I suggested in the intro that people
    make references to their EUREKA::WHOAREYOU entry, if they have one
    - with the implication that if they don't, they could write one.
    I too like to know a bit about who is participating - it helps me
    understand their contributions better.

	Anyone who doesn't know everything there is to know about me by
    now just doesn't read this notesfile. But, just in case you're new to
    this file and don't care to read the historical stuff (as well as wanting
    to see my recent update information), I'm note # 655.0 & .1 in the
    EUREKA::WHOAREYOU notesfile.

    To my mind, an "introduction" is exactly that --- you tell folks
    who you are, and a few other (what you think are) salient facts.

    I find it difficult to itemize what I'm like inside my head. I'd
    rather that people find out what I'm like from what I write as
    responses to the topics in here.

I find it natural to *not* want to reveal too much of myself at first. If
I gradually feel more safe, I say more. I assume others also don't want
to spill their guts in first introduction.
