1259.0. "Console Error Message When Examining VMEM" by CSC32::STRING () Mon Apr 21 1997 20:26

    Hello,
I am working with a customer who is following the procedure to
force a crash on a VAX 7840 who is getting an error when trying to
examine the virtual memory address of the ISP. She does the >>> EXAMINE
ISP command and gets IPR: 00000004 (ISP) 7FFE7730 returned from the
    console. She then does a EXAMINE -N 2 -L -S 4 vmem:7FFE7730 and gets
the following message: "Length violation found while converting virtual
address 7FFE7730. Error in read of 4 bytes at location 7FFE7730 from
vmem." The customer got this procedure from a DSNlink article on how to
force a crash on the VAX 7000, so apparently this should work. She sent
me this information via fax and prior to performing these commands I
    see a "set compat_mode v55" followed by a "D PSL 041F0000", a "D PC
FFFFFFFF" and then a "SYSTEM SHUTDOWN COMPLETE- use console to hale
system". Could the problem be that VMS is shutdown already or something
with the V55 compatibility? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank
    You for your time.

All I can say here is that the basic process is right. I tried the
steps indicated in .0 and all seems to be right. I can examine the
isp and then the VMEM indicated. I even crashed the system by the
deposit of ffffffff in the pc. That ISP address looks a little
suspicious. The ISP should start with 8xxxxxxx. ??

While running VMS the ^p is issued, the user should be able to exam
the ISP and its subsequent contents of that address using the command
string in the base note. If a FFFFFFFF is deposited in the PC at this
point and a continue is issued the CPU should crash. Does for me.

    Jim,
Thank You for your effort. This makes me believe that the problem
was that the customer shut down VMS first, invalidating the ISP. I have
advised her to try this procedure with VMS up and let me know the
results. Thanks again for your assistance.
