what's the construction going on outside of MLO21 going to be,
where there is more space, when the bridges will be completed
between blding 1 and blding 5, what groups exist in which sites

1.1brief conference guidelines and policiesTOOK::DITMARSPeteFri May 11 1990 19:1530
Until I find a "real" set of guidelines, these will have to do.

1) Adhere to all Digital corporate policies on noting. I'll post excerpts
of the actual policies here eventually, but in a nutshell, "Do the right
thing" and "Don't say stuff that you, or the company, could be sued for".

2) Adhere to common noting courtesies. ALL CAPS IS SHOUTING. Efforts to
use correct spelling and grammar are appreciated by all. Descriptive titles
on base notes and replies are strongly encouraged.

3) If you are asking a question, or are thinking of starting a discussion,
take a minute to search the conference for an existing base note before
creating one. Some useful NOTES commands to know are:

	DIR/TITLE=word_or_phrase_you_are_interested_in

to find a list of notes that might already address your question

	REPLY

to reply to the note you are currently reading as opposed to
WRITE, which begins a new base note

	HELP

to get more information on how to use NOTES

Discussion of the MAYNARD notes conference usage, policies, etc., is in note 225

1.2Notes policy statementTOOK::DITMARSPeteTue Jul 10 1990 13:1451
This is a notice that has been circulated by Ron Glover, Digital's Corporate
Personnel Policy Manager. As far as I know, none of the individuals or business
entites referred to in the notice that contacted Digital were upset about
the MAYNARD conference in particular. Let's keep it that way.

			* IMPORTANT NOTICE *

Over the last several months Digital has been contacted by a number of
individuals and business entities that were angry about negative
comments made about them in our Notesfiles and Conferences. As the
Personnel Policy Manager for Digital I have been the recipient of many
of those notes. I thought I should take the time to post this note to
inform employees that it is not appropriate for them to make negative
comments or references about any person or business entity in any of
Digital's employee interest notesfile or conferences.

There are several reasons why we are establishing this rule.
The first has to do with fundamental fairness. It is simply not fair
for an employee to make a negative comment about a business when we
don't provide those businesses an opportunity to respond and defend
themselves. This is particularly true given the fact that we have no
way of determining whether the comment is honest, fair or accurate.
Clearly Digital has no intention, or desire, to open up its notesfiles
to third-party businesses so that they can engage in a debate about
whether they provide quality services. The only logical solution then
is to ask our employees to refrain from using the Notesfiles to air
grievances they have with individuals, vendors, or organizations.

In addition to out concerns about fairness, we are concerned about the
potential damage that these kinds of comments may cause to third-party
businesses. In that regard, employees should understand that they may
be personally liable if the statements they make cause harm to any
person or business. Moreover, there is some possibility Digital may be
held liable for such comments as well. Stated more simply, comments
made in a Notesfile or conference are in no way privileged or immune
from claims of liable, slander or defamation.

We are asking all of the users of Notesfiles to exercise discretion and
judgement in the comments that they make in the system. We are also
asking moderators to go back and review the notesfiles they
moderate and to remove any notes that include derogatory references to
third-party businesses.

Please feel free to contact your moderator if you have any questions
on this subject.

Proper Use of Digital Computers, Systems and
                                   Networks

SCOPE: WORLDWIDE

PHILOSOPHY

Systems and network utilities are powerful business tools, encouraging
creativity and the exchange of ideas needed to maintain our
competitive edge. These tools allow for instantaneous creation of
"electronic" organizations to focus worldwide resources on urgent
tasks. We want to encourage our people to use these tools in
accordance with Company philosophy and values.

Our peer-to-peer, open computing environment reflects our corporate
culture. We sell this concept to customers, and business and society
are clearly moving towards this way of operating. We believe that
what we sell to our customers will get better if we use it ourselves.

Information, and the ability to freely communicate it are valuable
assets that play a significant role in Digital's success. The
protection and appropriate use of these assets is everyone's
responsibility. We must strike a balance between encouraging open
systems and protecting these assets if they are to continue to support
    our success.

POLICY

Digital owns and operates computers, systems and networks primarily to
support the Company's business activities. Systems should be used to
enhance the cost effectiveness and efficient running of the business,
to assist employees in being more effective in executing their duties
and responsibilities, to enhance our employees' ability to operate our
computer systems, to foster appropriate open and efficient
communications and to perpetuate the use of computers in day-to-day
    activities.

Employees should remember that computers, systems and networks like
paper files, notebooks etc., are company assets provided to employees
to assist them in performing their work. These tools, and the work
product they contain are Company property and are therefore subject to
Company review and control. The efficient operation of these vital
resources is critical to the success of the business, and it is

therefore the responsibility of all employees to use the computer
resources provided to them by the Company appropriately.

DEFINITIONS

For the purpose of this policy, improper use includes, but is not
limited to the use of Digital owned and/or operated systems, networks
and conferences for the purpose of gaining unauthorized access to
internal or external computer systems or accounts, for personal
purposes that are contrary to Company philosophy or policy, for
purposes that interfere or compete with the Company's business
activities, or for purposes of individual financial gain. Examples
of misuse include, but are not limited to, transmitting sexual or
ethnic jokes or slurs, soliciting other employees, developing chain
letters, making defamatory statements, disclosing private facts about
any individual or organization, inappropriate disclosure of Company
Proprietary or Confidential Information, permitting unauthorized
    access, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES

COST CENTER MANAGERS - Cost center managers are responsible for
effective use of the Company's assets, which includes networking
and computers. They may delegate that responsibility to other
individuals, but they are ultimately responsible for making sure
    these policies are adhered to.

SYSTEMS MANAGERS - All employees must ensure that computers,
systems and networks that they manage are clearly operating in
support of Company business activities. System Managers must
immediately investigate and report any incident of misuse by an
    employee to the employee's manager.

MANAGERS - Managers should periodically remind employees about the
appropriate use of Company computer resources and, monitor these
resources to insure that they are being used in accordance with
    this policy.

EMPLOYEES - Employees are expected to use Company sponsored
computer resources and their time at work (as determined by their

manager) in accordance with this policy and to support Company
business activities. In addition, employees should report all
    potential misuse to their manager.

CONFERENCE MODERATORS - Conference (Notesfile) moderators are
expected to periodically review the contents of the conferences
they moderate to insure that material contained in those files
meet the letter and spirit of this policy. Moderators are expected
to remove any material that does not comply with these standards,
and should report violations of this policy to the appropriate
    systems or cost center manager.

NOTES FILES/CONFERENCES

Digital provides systems to its employees to maintain computer
conferences (Notes files) in direct support of Company business (i.e.,
product development, financial analysis, business planning, etc.).
Digital also permits access to these systems to communicate matters of
    opinions and common interests.

In all cases a computer conference must have an identified conference
moderator as defined above. Where the conference directly supports
the Company's business, the conference moderator and the responsible
systems manager may elect to restrict access to the conference.
Digital classified information may only be placed in a conference with
restricted access. Conferences created to communicate matters of
opinion and common interests may not be used for solicitations of any
kind, and must be open to all employees.

In addition, these conferences may not be used to promote behavior
which is contrary to the Company's values or policy (i.e., they may
not promote discrimination, disrespect for the individual, violence,
etc.). It is the responsibility of employees who utilize such notes
files to do so in a manner consistent with both the letter and spirit
of this policy and the Company's values. The Company reserves the
right to terminate any notesfile it believes is inappropriate or in
    violation of this policy.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR CONTENT OF MESSAGES SENT OR POSTED ON NETWORK

Messages mailed or posted over the Digital network are the
responsibility of the original author. Posting these materials in a
notesfile/conference without the explicit permission of the author is
prohibited and is a violation of this policy.

When forwarding messages or posting them to conferences, removal or
falsification of the original message header (which indicates the
    author) is prohibited.

This policy covers all messages addressed to individuals and
organizations. It is not intended to restrict the distribution of
general announcements, course listings, etc., or messages originally
posted on external bulletin boards such as Usenet news groups.

COMPANY ACCESS

Because networks, computer systems and accounts are resources the
Company provides to its employees, the Company reserves the right to
access those networks, systems and accounts as it deems necessary.

POLICY VIOLATIONS

Managers who suspect systems are being used improperly should discuss
the problem with the employee in question and, if appropriate, involve
security. In cases where improper use has been clearly established,
the employee should be dealt with in accordance with the Corrective
    Action and Disciplinary Policy (6.21).

1.6statements regarding any third-party businessesTOOK::DITMARSPeteThu May 23 1991 18:0019
When making a statement regarding any third-party businesses, the following
rules apply:

1) Due to liability issues, we no longer allow negative references in this
conference. If you have a negative experience with a third-party business
for which a positive reference has been given, send mail to one of the
moderators and we will delete the positive reference.

2) References are not allowed for third-party businesses you are associated
with. Digital policy specifically prohibits use of company property for
business ads, and any ads entered here will be deleted. Note also that due
to the biased nature of the source, any references for people you are closely
connected to - ie relatives - will be considered to be ads.

Also, keep in mind that there are other notes conferences that are intended
for, and frequented by, noters with specific interests. CARBUFFS,
HOME_WORK, and EATS, are just a few examples of such conferences.

1.8General Conference GuidelinesSTEREO::PARKERTEMPORARILY INTRAPHASED, STANDBYTue Jun 25 1991 11:2094
Through our experience with noting in general we've come up with
these policies that seem to make sense.

First of all, be aware and try to remember while you read this file,
everyone here is participating because they want to exchange ideas and
thoughts. When you read someone's note, read it with that in mind. It'll go
a long way toward minimizing misunderstandings and hurt feelings when we get
involved in controversial topics.

Please be aware that people have differing needs when they put a note
in this file. Sometimes people just want to vent. If someone asks for a
"shoulder to cry on" or says they want to "vent", please just lend support.
If their note raises an issue that you'd like to discuss and it's not
supportive, look for an existing note on the subject or if one doesn't exist,
start one. On the other hand, if you start a note and put in phrases like "I
need a different perspective" or "am I wrong?" Don't be surprised if someone
tells you that you ARE wrong. If you ask for people's opinions, you'll get'em.
(Phrased tactfully, we hope... )

Also be aware that communication by notes is not the same as a spoken
conversation. We do not have the subtle (and not so subtle) cues of body
language, facial expression, and tone of voice to tell us whether or not someone
is joking. (We do have other things to help us there which will be covered in
the next reply.) We have lag time between entries that can compound
misunderstanding. That is, A mis-types something. B jumps on A about it. C
says "Yeah! What B said!" and it snowballs until the point that A reads notes
again and says "Oops! I left out the 'not' in 'not all X's are slime.'"
making the whole thing a moot point. These points are particularly important
when participating in controversial notes.

Speaking of controversial notes, there are a few topics which pop up
with amazing regularity which are guaranteed to raise people's blood pressure.
While these are valid topics to be discussed here, the moderators beg you to
1) keep your cool and remember to respect the other noters even if you don't
agree with them and 2) Please confine discussion of these topics to the notes
intended for it. Please don't take every note down a rathole on one of these
subjects. Failure to comply will result in moderator action and most
importantly, please do not bring into play people or personalities, implied or
otherwise.

So what kind of things will the moderators do? Most of the time, we'll
just drop a gentle hint to calm down or keep to the subject. Occasionally
we'll move a note to a better place.

If a note or reply is controversial to the point that we think it would
endanger the continued existence of the notefile we will set it hidden or
remove it. (Notes that would require this action are threats, racial slurs,
notes that might involve us in legal action, bring into play people or
personalities, implied or otherwise and so on.

As we all are reasonable people here, we won't need to worry about that, right?)

Authors are responsible for the notes that they write in the MAYNARD
conference. Each note in the conference must be written by an
identifiable individual. If you must enter a note from an anonymous or group
account (SYSTEM, FIELD, OPER, GUEST, etc.), please sign your name at the end of
the note, or otherwise make your identity clear.

You may appeal any moderator action *by mail* to the moderators. If
you and the involved moderator cannot come to a satisfactory agreement, the
action recommended by majority of the moderators will be taken.

So who are these infamous moderators anyway? To see the current
moderators, use the show moderator command.

(For those using Decwindows, use the "Members..." option of the "Conference"
menu.) To send mail to the moderators, use the send/moderators command.

**** NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE NOTE ****

In response to some clarification of existing DEC policies and in
recognition of the fact that this type of information tends to be of limited
use geographically speaking and that that it becomes dated very quickly, we
are asking that you no longer advertise/make recommendations concerning
services available. Requests for information may be posted (there are notes
reserved for such requests). Please respond to these people off-line (e-mail
or phone) if you have information to share with them. Old requests for
information will be cleaned out on a regular basis.

Until we receive further clarification, we are taking the position that
you may still make product reccomendations here as long as you are careful
with your wording. Positive reviews are not generally a problem. Negative
reviews should be clearly stated as your opinion/experience and not
over-generalized.

A MESSAGE TO EMPLOYEE INTEREST NOTES FILE USERS

Over the last few months I have received a number of complaints
from employees, and individuals outside of the company about
material communicated in electronic mail systems and posted in
various employee interest notes files. After reading some of this
material it is clear that a reminder about appropriate comment and
behavior in these systems is necessary.

First, and most critically; the electronic mail systems and notes
files are company facilities subject to normal workplace rules of
conduct. As such, the same rules that govern conduct and comment
in any other Digital workplace apply with equal weight in these
systems. Stated simply, if you wouldn't say something in a
Digital business meeting, you shouldn't say it in electronic mail
    or notes. PERIOD.

Statements that attribute improper, illegal or immoral motives or
actions to others; statements that cast aspersions on the
character or integrity of others or that amount to libel or
slander are not permitted. PERIOD. In this regard, it does not
matter whether the individuals subject to the comment are elected
public officials or directors of organizations disfavored by the
author. There is no "Public Figure" exception in these systems.

Comments of a sexual nature are not acceptable whether they are
about the author or directed at others. Similarly, comments that
degrade, devalue or discriminate against others are also
    prohibited.

Neither the notes conferences nor electronic mail should be used
to solicit other employees. This prohibition covers efforts to
solicit employees for personal or political gain, to sell or
market goods or services (except authorized marketplace or
discount conferences) and efforts to solicit employees to take
action, sign petitions or support particular causes or candidates.

Finally, employees should remember that it is never appropriate to
spend working time in employee interest notes for non-work
purposes. Personal or entertainment activities in these notes
files should be limited to assigned break times, lunch time and
    before or after business hours.

Employee interest notes files and conferences provide an
electronic forum to share ideas and opinions about matters of
common interest. In supporting these conferences, the company
understood that there would be occasions where employees would
disagree on issues being discussed, but we believed and continue
to believe it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable.
Personnel Policy 6.54, Proper Use of Digital Computers, Systems
and Networks provides further information about appropriate
conduct and comment in these systems. Employees who fail to meet
these expectations, or who use company computer systems in ways
that are contrary to the letter or spirit of that policy are
subject to Corrective Action and Discipline up to and including
    the termination of their employment.

The moderators of these conferences, along with your system
managers, personnel representatives and the Personnel Policy
Manager are all available to answer any question you might have
about appropriate use of these systems.

Please feel free to forward this memo to other Digital notes
    files and conferences.

			 Locating Conferences
			       Via VTX

As an alternative to copying and printing the EASYNOTES.LIS, consider
using VTX, which will allow you to locate conferences using the latest
EASYNOTES.LIS listing quickly and efficiently....generally using as
few as two keystrokes and within ten seconds.

Two infobases exist to allow you to do this:

	VAX Notes Conferences (Keyname=EASYNOTES)
	Notes Conference Indes (Keyname=NOTES_INDEX)

Both infobases update listings regularly and allow you to look up
conferences by category or by keyword. Instructions exist in each
infobase for looking up conferences. For example, the following
sequence, starting from DCL, resulted in the display indicated and
took 11 seconds from Littleton, Mass (commands and keystrokes are in
quotes):

	"VTX EASYNOTES"
	"<FIND>MAYNARD"

	Maynard EASYNET_CONFERENCES #758

MCC1's DECnet node address has recently changed. Those of you who are reading
the conference successfully probably don't need the following information,
but for your friends who might not be able to connect to MCC1 any more,
I've enclosed the following set of directions to update their NCP databases.

The following sequence of commands will get your NCP database back up to date
with MCC1's new address:

(you need a priv'd account on VMS or ULTRIX)
$ mcr ncp ! to invoke NCP on VMS
		-- or --
% ncp ! to invoke NCP on ULTRIX

ncp>purge node 55.380
ncp>clear node 55.380
ncp>purge node mcc1
ncp>clear node mcc1
ncp>define node 55.380 name mcc1
ncp>set node mcc1 all
ncp>sho node mcc1

1.14Warning... Changes ahead...PRAGMA::GRIFFINDave GriffinFri May 31 1996 22:3511
Just to let everybody know. On June 7th this conference will
be moving. Just where and how is still up in the air.

I'm moving to a new location and PRAGMA will go along with me.

Either this conference will move to a new system at my new
site or PRAGMA will get a new DECnet address.

FYI,

- dave
