476.0. "Noise Pollution on Mill Street" by AITRNG::MASON (The law of KARMA hasn't been repealed) Mon Sep 12 1994 17:06

I live on Mill Street in the the Stonebridge Narrows Condos. There is
a Mac Truck repair shop directly across the street from my unit, and
they seem to do business at all hours of the day and night.

Trucks start rolling in as early as 6:30 a.m., and often continue
through midnight. Sometimes these truck park on the condo side of the
street and leave the motor running, so I get not only noise pollution,
but air pollution wafting up to the third floor.

One night I actually called over there just a little after midnight,
and asked them to shut the engines off, which they did, but it took me
awhile to get back to sleep.

After almost 5 years of putting up with this place, I'm getting really
tired of it. So, I'm looking for some advice.

    Does anyone know:

    - what the zoning rules are on Mill Street, and if there are rules
about what hours business like this can keep in a residential area.

    OR,

    - where I can go to find this out?

    - what can I do to get them to keep more regular, reasonable hours,
    like say, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.?

    Suggestions will be appreciated!

I'd prefer the "noise pollution" of an antique town clock. (see note
    475)

    Good luck,

Why don't you people get together ; call the selectmens office and
get on the agenda at their next meeting, followed up by a certified
letter to them (the selectmen) and let them handle the issue it they
think there is one and if they don't vote them out of office next time.
or bring it up at town meeting..

Whinning in the notes file want do anything about it.

Next time it happens, try calling the police. There's got to be noise
    ordinances in Maynard.

Don't count on the town having a noise ordinance. A lot of towns like this
don't.
I hope you are a renter, not an owner. This could affect the resale value of
your unit.
Some advice to apartment/condo hunters: check out the neighborhood REAL
carefully before buying or renting. If there is a business within sight or
earshot that has anything to do with trucks, find another place. Truckers and
the people who service them operate at all hours of the day and night, and
you WILL be disturbed. Even if the business has reasonable hours now, it
could change hands next month.

Maynard does have a noise ordinance (quiet times) call the selectmans
office and they can help you.

476.6All's Well That Ends Well...AITRNG::MASONThe law of KARMA hasn't been repealedFri Nov 11 1994 14:0626
I did call the town selectmen's office, and spoke with Michael Gionotis
(sp?). He was very helpful. He told me he'd have the police go by and
remind them that they had neighbors. He also suggested that I go
around to people in the condo, and get a list of times, dates, etc of
times that the noise was particularly bad.

He also told me that the zoning on my part of Mill St is combination
residence and business, which means that the garage can conduct
business from 6:30 in the morning till 10 p.m., but that Sat and Sun
they should not be doing business.

The visit from the police seems to have helped, and they are no longer
running truck engines on my side of the street, and I have not heard
    noise there after 10 p.m.

It also helps that it's gotten colder and my window is closed now. In
the spring, I'll start keeping a log of problems if the noise gets bad
again, and will ask neighbors to do the same.

This ended up being a very positive experience. Michael was very
helpful on the phone, and the police did follow up, and the garage
people are trying to keep the noise down. So, for now, it's better.

    thanks for the help!
