446.0. "Mill visits still on?" by PEKING::GERRYT () Mon Oct 11 1993 11:28

I posted some responses to earlier topic numbers, but without success.
I also tried to send mails to two names form the property group on the
    earlier note with no success!

    HELP!

Are employees from other locations still able to visit the Mill?
I'm over in Boston w/c 25th October on vacation with my wife, and it would
be nice to see where the HQ is and perhaps see where it all started,
    before Digital vacate the premises.

Is there a computer museum showing the development of Digital
    products over the years?

What's the easiest way to get to the Mill from Boston, and what are the
    directions?

Who should I try and contact to see if a visit is possible?

    Thanks in anticipation,

    Tim

I'm not a Millrat, so I can't answer all your questions, however:

The last I heard of a Digital computer museum it was located in Marlboro,
not the Mill. There are bits and pieces of history at the Mill, but if
you want to see old computer equipment, head to Marlboro (probably MR1 or 2).

Easiest way to the Mill: Well the easiest way for me to describe it is: find
Route 2 West, get on 27 south to Maynard, drive around Maynard a bit till
you find the largest Mill building. You can't miss it.

If you have a badge, you can always just drop and and explore. You may not
get into the clock tower and nifty places like that, but some asking around
might reveal some interesting sights. Besides, you should be able to say to
your friends that you "got lost in the Mill" -- it's a badge of experience!

The original computer museum started here in MRO2 lobby. Since, it has
gone to the real computer museum in Boston. There are still plenty of
pictures, machines, biographies, and chronologies here in MRO. It is
worth a look if you are in Marloboro, but I wouldn't go out of my way
    for it.

I can't just walk in a look around unsupervised! I might meet someone
important, and my wife might be with me!

What work groups remain at the Mill?

    Cheers,

Yes, the Mill still gives tours - call Facilities at DTN 223-2308 to
    arrange it.

Eh? I would think that would be a nice experience, not one to be avoided!

No matter -- have fun!

The Mill is pretty much completely Full....has
a little bit of everyting in there. Your question
seems to imply you view it as a big, empty set of buildings.

When you walk around in the Mill, you may say 'geez, i'm glad
I dont work here'.....you also might wonder why DEC would
just abandon all that office space.

    Bob,

    No I'm not assuming it's empty...yet!
I'm sure we in Dec Park in Reading UK have similar 'space'
problems...some of us call the workspaces 'pig-pens' 'cause they're
    just about large enough !

Thanks to all for the info./....i'll contact the Facilities number.

Re getting to the Mill from Boston: It's shorter if you take route 2 west
about 20 miles to route 62 west about 3 miles. Stay on 62 thru Maynard and the
Mill is on the left after the business district. You can't miss it.
