443.0. "Volkswalk in Maynard" by TOOK::MORRISON (Bob M. LKG1-3/A11 226-7570) Mon Oct 04 1993 18:39

Yesterday a Volkswalk was held in Maynard. Briefly, a Volkswalk is an organ-
ized walk on a marked route 10 or 11 kilometers long in which you start during
a time window (about 3 hours), pass two checkpoints en route, and return to
the starting point. It is not a fund-raiser and it's free. (Serious Volks-
walkers can pay a small charge and get special credit.)
I have gone on 3 or 4 of these walks over the last three years, and I've
always had a good time. On this one, I saw some things in Maynard I had never
seen before, even though I worked in Maynard for a year in 1981 and occasionally
poked around the town. For example, I saw the dam on the Assabet that provided
power for the Mill and got an unusual view of the fill from the housing for
the elderly off Summerhill Rd. I also saw some interesting residential areas
that I would not have seen otherwise.
I apologize for not posting advance notice of this here. Volkswalks are usu-
ally not repeated on the same route but if this one is, I will try to remember
to post it.

I was wondering what all those folks were doing walking down my street
(Summerhill). It sure looked like a fundraiser of some sort! Pity the
weather took its time getting nice.

We (also Summerhill) had the same "wonder" as Dave. Wish I'd known
about it, I would like to have joined in. Any chance of getting the
    route that was used?
