432.0. "Vacation Rental wanted" by RTOIC::NWIBBERENZ () Tue Jun 15 1993 13:01

Holiday accomodation wanted in the greater Boston area.

Need house or condo for 2 adults and 3 kids.

Time: 7-Aug-93 to 17-Aug-93 or parts of it.

I have to go to Maynard/Boxboro, while my family wants to explore Boston,
so any location in greater Boston area up to 10 miles out of the 495 would
be ideal.

Just in case if I don't find a house/condo, does anybody know a hotel
with reasonable prices (I have to pay, not DEC), with pool and maybe a
kitchenette ?

Your help is appreciated

Norbert

    Hello,

The Boxboro Host Hotel is practically on 495. I do not know what their
rates are, but I believe they are reasonable. They may offer a discount
for Digital employees even if it is for personal travel.

Good luck- hope you and your family have a nice trip!

432.2I'd suggest something closer to the CityPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaThu Jun 17 1993 15:3222
Boxboro is hardly the place to use as home base for exploring Boston.
There is NOTHING and I mean N O T H I N G interesting within a half
hour's drive of the hotel. (I lived there for two weeks when DEC hired
me. I was frustrated by it.) The place is out in the middle of the
woods at the corner of the highway and a back road. There are no
kitchens, and your choices for food are the hotel's own restraunt
(expensive) or drive at least 10 minutes to the nearest MacDonald's
hamburger fast food restraunt (in Acton).

(Well, they used to have their own little ski slope, but that won't
help you in August.)

Try to find something that is along route 128, rather than along 495.
It is still far enough outside the city to have good rates, and all the
local tourist attractions (like Concord/Lexington) are nearby, and it's
easier access to the "downtown" boston.

There is a hotel at the intersection of, I think, Rt 30 and 128, which
is also very close to the "Riverside" "Green Line" subway station,
which would be handy for travel into and out of the city. Anyone know
which one I'm talking about?

You could write to Tourist Information
    Prudential Plaza
West Boston, Ma (don't know the zip code)
    tele (617)536-4100

They may be able to send you some information on what is available.

    re:432.2

Jeffrey, you're right. Boxboro Host is right for going to work, but not
    for vacation.

I've to apologise for being not clear in my request.
I am looking for a place within a radius between Boston downtown and up
to ten miles behind (=outside) the 495. This also includes the circle
onto the Atlantic ocean... So it's a real big area....

Regardless of where you stay, you definitely need a rental car for yourself to
get to Maynard/Boxboro. So for convenience, I would suggest a hotel that is
close to the train or T (subway) station for your family to go to Boston while
you work.

Forget about commercial apartment/condo rentals. They are nice, but you usually
have to rent it for at least a full month or sometimes even more. So unless the
monthly rent is cheaper than a 10-day stay at a hotel, it is out of the question.

I agree with -.1. The Boxboro Host hotel is not convenient for your family to
go to Boston, unless they drop you off to work (very convenient to BXB1 and BXB2)
and take the car to Boston (not advisable). A better choice would be Sheraton
in Lexington (near a bus line to Alewife T station) or Howard Johnson on Rt. 2
in Concord (near West Concord train station). Other hotels in Waltham might also
be a good choice as the train goes there too. If you want a cheaper, but less
comfortable room, Susse Chalet at Alewife in Cambridge is within a walking
distance to the Alewife T station.

Hope this helps.

I think the hotel near the Riverside T station is a Days Inn (Newton).
432.7How about Concord?GIAMEM::S_MORINMon Jun 21 1993 15:5715

You might want to try the Colonial Inn in Concord. Concord has lots of
things to see, it has a nice down town and there is a train station so
that you could go into Boston.

For information in the hotel you can write or call.

There is also a Howard Johnsons right off of rt. 2 in Concord. That is
not to far from Concord center and can also get you to Boston right up
    rt. 2.
