431.0. "Route 2 East Attraction" by ICS::LEDOUX () Thu Jun 03 1993 13:52

    Hello,

I've sent mail to Frank Ignachuck and he said I could put this question
in here (even thought it's not happening in Maynard).

Every morning on my way to work in Maynard I come down 495 south and
then onto Route 2 east. For about 2-3 weeks now shortly after I get
onto Route 2 there are cars pulled over to the right and people are
looking out into the marsh there with binoculars. This is about a mile
before the exit for BXC, Littleton Road.

Does anyone out in Noteland know what it is that these people are looking
at?? They're there in the afternoon too and I'm really getting
    curious....

I look forward to seeing a reply here with some type of explanation...

    Ruth

I believe the area is a nesting gorund for Herons.

Check in the Massachusetts notesfile.

That's what they are blue herons. They usually don't come this far
east. This is the first year that they nested here. So next time
bring your binoculars and take a peek. There was an article about
them in the free paper that comes to the houses a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the curiosity satifier, now at least I know what I'm
supposed to look for. I will also check the Massachusetts notes file
    for more information.

There was an accident there either yesterday or Weds. so it will
shortly be posted "no parking." Folks are slowing way down to look
without stopping, and some are just pulling over on Rte. 2
without getting completely off the highway. If you're a passenger, you
can see the nests in the trees from the road. Pretty impressive.
Maybe they'll designate and post some sort of parking area.

They showed the herons on the news the other night. A State Trooper
was also on stating there has been a lot of accidents in the area due
to people pulling out, etc. The herons were really beautiful!

Yes, they've posted No Parking signs in the area but they are being
ignored. Believe it or not, there was a bus parked right in front of
the No Parking sign last week.
