430.0. "Items getting stolen from yards" by ARGON::DEROSA (oh-da-be) Mon May 24 1993 17:56

    FLAME ON....

I've got to get this off my chest. Someone or some people stole
flower boxes full of flowers right out of my yard sometime last
week. They were laying in between shrubs until I got a chance to put
them up. They were about 50 or 60 pounds each. I was sooooooooo pis**
off! I just can't believe someone would do that. Used to be I never even
locked my house here in Maynard. I know, now someone's gonna reply
welcome to the real world or something like that. But, that's the way
it was not very long ago. Not to sound naive or anything, but are
"they" that hard up? Someone had to know right where they were. You had to
really look to see them. I called the police and they told me that they
recieved other reports of missing flower pots. I don't think these were
kids doing mischief, either. I could kind of understand that. This was
well planned out. They left a bird bath intact and other things. So now I
have to worry about people stalking my house. What else are they capable
of? From now on everyone driving down my street that doesn't belong is
    suspect.

So now we can't even decorate our yards for fear of things getting
    ripped off? AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!

    FLAME OFF....

There, I feel better now. (well, not really)

That is really a drag, Bob.

I recall seeing a report in another conference, either Massachusetts or
Gardening, from someone in another town who found an entire tree
    missing.

This was an expensive ornamental they had just bought. I forget if it
was in the ground or still bagged when it was stolen. The thief was
    obviously very organized and knowledgeable.

I had intended to put up some motion detector lights. I think I
WILL now. Nothing like closing the barn door after the horses
got out though. Until then I'll keep my Louisville Slugger handy.

There was a news story a while back of people losing landscaping -
shrubs, trees, flowers, etc. Seems shady contractors are making the
old midnight run and reselling them as new.

Might want to start chaining things down. This was mostly happening in
Framingham and surrounding areas sometime last year. Looks like
they may have moved into your direction. People were having very
expensive trees dug right out of their yards.

I guess nothing is sacred any more.

I can't believe people have the nerve to steal things out of peoples
yards but I know it happens. I had a plant stolen off my porch years
back - boy was I mad.

The tree that was stolen last year was in Framingham, I remember that.
It's in the Gardening file - note 2338.

Someone stole one of those rod iron park benches right out of my
mother-in-laws back yard one night, and those things are heavy. She
has also gotten stolen out of her yard, those statues and some flower
    pots.

Seems you can't have anything nice in your yard anymore.

If someone comes on my property to steel something or

I thought we were talking about stealing plants and such. Using force
when some-one is trying to do you harm is a little different. I don't
think that I would want to spend my time at wapole because I hit some
16 year old kid in the head and killed him over a pot of flowers or a
    pumpkin.

Besides I spend time every two weeks at MCI visiting Viet-Vet Prisoners
and MCI, and I don't think that is a place I would want to stay away
    from my family for.

Well you're right there, I'm not gonna go after a young kid with
a baseball bat over a pumkin or a flower pot. That's just kids being
kids and I can deal with that. I didn't mean it to sound that way.
I was trying to make a point.

BTW, it wasn't just a flower pot, It was 4 brand new pressure treated
window boxes that my wife worked very hard planting/arranging all
different kinds flowers in. We're talking well over two hundred dollars
here. I doubt if these were taken by "some 16 year old kid" just
    goofin' around.

Oh, believe me I know how you feel, the best way to deal with it though
is to let the police record everything that is stolen; all you have to
do is report it they donot have to come out if you just ask them to put
it into the log. that why you can get a pattern of when it happens. If
they donot know they cannot do anything about it. We have a very good
police dept. and if your having a problem they will do an extra patrol,
and the crooks will slip up and get caught.

example: we have a terrible speeding car problem on ELM court especially
with kids riding their bikes with the good weather, a few years ago
I borrowed a track and field speed radar gun and video tape how fast
cars were coming through the area. I only tape the ones with speed of
excess of 45 and on ELM court that is very fast.; but we got our
    problem resolved.

I know how you feel about the thefts but if you and your neighbors go to
Chief Tibits, I am sure that the problem wil be handled and you want end
up on the wrong side of a cell.

Well, the stolen items, in Maynard, listed in this note so far are:

.0 - window boxes, just happened
.2 - wind chimes, date of theft not said
.6 - benches, statue, flower pots I assume this is in Maynard,
					date of theft not said

So they may all have been listed in the police blotter, but unless
they were all in the same week, the pattern would probably not have
been noticed by most readers.
430.16MILPND::CANSLERWed Jun 02 1993 12:568

Who said anything about most readers; of the police blotter, I assume
you are speaking of the newspaper; I am talking about the police log
which is looked at for such trends (called police work by the way,
which I think our town force does very well.
They do not just sit around all day waiting for things to happen
besides most of what happens never makes it into the newspaper anyway.
Public records are interesting to read sometimes.
430.17POWDML::DUNNWed Jun 02 1993 13:258
Oh, yes, I thought you meant the newspaper extract of the police log.

I still think that with 3 items listed here as stolen in Maynard, even
spread over only one garden season, the "pattern" would not be
evident. The authors don't say, but these did not necessarily all
happen in the same year.

430.18MILPND::CANSLERWed Jun 02 1993 14:0611

My only reason for even responding to this was to emphasize the fact
the one can complain all they want, but you you really want to stop it
you have to be pro-active. If one does not report it, no matter how
small it is how can any one do something to stop it; so it will not
continue. I agree with you that the authors don't say these happened
in the same year, but the way they are written one could assume these
did happen this year. (YES, i know what ASSUME means). Any way, I have
    had fun corresponding.

I just what to say that I just read this note on Friday and was
a little disheartened to heard that people were getting things
stolen off their properties. Well....guess what happened to me
this weekend? Someone stole my ROCK! I had a nice white rock,
not a painted one, a real, bright, white rock at the end on my
driveway so I could see at night were my driveway started and
someone has removed it. UGH...it makes me feel sick.

I do believe it's was probably just the kids in the neighborhood,
but how far could they have taken a big rock.
Questions is, do I report my rock stolen???? I certainly wouldn't
put it in the same place again.

I feel a little better just letting others know what happened.
        Thanks for listenting.

        Terri

BTW: My husband and I just bought our house in December, it's on
             Chandler Street off Elmwood.

Was the ROCK organic material or inorganic; we may have to call the
Atomic Energy commission also, since the movement could have cause
and embalance in the electro-magnetic fields in Maynard; I have felt
a little tired lately; that could be the cause.

Was the rock more than 50.00 in value, maybe your home owners policy
will cover it. I would call them right away and have them check it out
one thing we donot need at this time is rock nappers in maynard. We
have enough problems with the plant anarchist that are round already.
