396.0. "Library news" by TERSE::AUGUSTINE (Hate is not a family value) Tue Oct 06 1992 13:08

I was really disappointed to learn that I missed the Maynard Library
book sale this year. I read the Beacon religiously, and saw no requests
to donate books (I think there was a notice last year), nor did I see
an announcement of the event itself. I _did_ see a picture of the event
after the fact, though.

I'm hoping that someone else who reads this file will feel encouraged to
post library news in this note. And I'm also hoping that I'll hear about
the book sale before it happens next year!

Thanks,
Liz

It caught me off-guard as well. I have hauled books for it for two years
now. I didn't know about till I drove past it on my way to another all-day
event.

396.2I knew it was coming up...CLONEM::DONAHUETue Oct 06 1992 15:4010
I must have seen it advertised in the Middlesex News, as I knew before hand
that they were looking for donations. There is a woman in Mayanrd that writes
about local news for the Middlesex News. That is no doubt were I read about
this event.

I stipped reading the Beacon years ago, as I'm more interested in
Maynard/Acton/Boxboro news than Stow or Bolton. I like it best when it covered
ALL surrounding towns including Concord, Sudbury, etc.

396.3 library news....GIAMEM::S_MORINFri Nov 06 1992 15:1010
I know I'm late in repling but....

The library will accept books for the book sale through out the year.
It is put on by the "Friends of the Library" which also has a cart of
books for sale in the library that is maintained all year.

The notice for the book sale was posted in the library. This year
it was confusing because the planned date changed a few times.

396.5Did they change the date?POWDML::PILLIVANTMon Sep 20 1993 12:565
I rode by the Park saturday but did not see the book sale - was it
postponed because rain was forecast? Did I miss the big yellow tent
they usually have? Did they change the date? I did not see it
advertised anywhere this year. Usually it is in the Beacon and the
    Action newsletter.

I was at the library yesterday. They have postponed the sale. They
still have not come up with a date for the sale yet.

396.7Library ProblemsGIAMEM::S_MORINFri Nov 19 1993 15:5958

The Library is currently experiencing staffing shortages due to
one open position and two employees out on medical leave.
As a result of the shortages the Library will be changing its
hours. It will be open only a limited amount of time. The proposed
open hours means that children will not have the full use of the
Library for their school research or for their enjoyment and
personal enrichment. It also means that people like myself who work
will not have any use of the Library because it will be open when I
am at work and closed when I am available to use it.

I feel that this is a sad situation. This library may be small
but it is used a lot by the residents of Maynard.

The library has had an open position for a children's librarian
for several months. What is being done to fill this position?

The director and the assistant director are both out on a medical
leave. This leaves only two permanent part time employees and two
temporary part time employees available. There is a lot of work in
running a library. Much more than we realize. Even with the
volunteers assisting the library it is not enough. They only perform
limited tasks. And since the hours are limited that also limits the
volunteers. I can no longer volunteer because the library will not
be open when I am available. I will resume when things return to
	or close to normal.

There needs to be an employee on each of the two floors to assist
the patrons. There also needs to be a reference librarian available
to answer reference questions. None of the current available personnel
feels qualified to answer some of these reference questions. The
library needs the children's librarian position filled AND there needs
to be enough money in the budget to cover emergencies such as this one.
We need to have a temporary/substitute director available to run the
library when the need arises. Someone with experience in library
administration. The school system has substitutes, we don't close
the schools when a teacher is ill. Your children would suffer if
we did. Well they will suffer with the closing of the library too.

I am concerned for the two employees that are trying to run the
library by themselves. Their health is at risk too due to the
	additional stress on them.

I am also concerned about the future of the library. How can we
let our library fall in shambles? It is not fair to the kids or
to all the people who use the library.

Please voice your concerns. Call your selectperson and the library
trustees. Here are the names of the trustees.

	Hal Shubin
	Bill Cullen
	Philip Bohunicky

	Very concerned,
	Suzanne Morin
