372.0. "Maydale Dairy in Maynard" by EARRTH::DEROSA (Say it ain't so!) Wed May 13 1992 12:30

    I installed a new bow window recently in my home in Maynard. In
    the walls we found 3 old empty bottles. Two were one pint chocolate
    milk bottles from Ericksons, but one interesting one was a one
    quart soda bottle from Maydale dairy in Maynard. The house was
    built in 1959. My, question is, does anyone know the history
    about this dairy,i.e., when was it started, who owned it, was 1959
    it's last year?, etc. I grew up in Maynard, and I think I remember
    the dairy, but I'm not sure. Anyways, I think it's a good conver-
    sation piece.

    Bob,

    There used to be a dairy behind Swat Warila's house on Summer St.
    No idea what it used to be called though. Swat's grandson has since
    built a house on the property, and there is a silo which still stands.

372.2that was Maple Crest.....EARRTH::DEROSASay it ain't so!Wed May 13 1992 16:589
    Steve,
       I asked about that one and was told that that was Maple Crest Dairy.
    I did find out that Maydale Dairy was somewhere on Glendale st.

       Who knows maybe that bottle is worth something to a collector.

                              later,
                              Bob

372.3Good TonicAIMHI::DEEWed May 13 1992 17:0917
    Bob,

    Maydale was a bottling company that made its own beverages ("tonic") and
    distributed them in eastern Mass. They had the best 'orange' drink and
    ginger ale. They were located on Glendale St. (MAYnard/GlenDALE)
    I have an original wooden Maydale crate that holds 12 quart bottles.
    Bob, old buddy, old pal, what would it take to part with that bottle
    you found?

    re: .1 Steve, I think the dairy up behind Swat's house was owned by
    the Drechsler family; I can't remember if that was the actual name they
    used for the dairy. But, Frank must surely remember- it was just up
    the hill from where he was raised.

372.4Orangeade from MaydaleSENIOR::IGNACHUCKNative MaynardianWed May 13 1992 20:0016
    Everything Jerry said in .3 is true. The orange drink was known
    as orangeade, and it was by far their biggest seller. At one time
    Maydale was sold up and down the east coast.

    My uncle Mike drove their delivery truck (orange, of course) for many
    years.

    The tonic was made in a barn on Glendale Street, about three or
    four houses in from Acton Street, on the left (this is the dead
    end side of Glendale). There was/is a spring inside the barn as
    the source for the water used in making the tonic.

    The bottle you found, Bob, is not going to make you rich, but it
    is a nice Maynard collectable.

    Didn't Maydale also at one time sell their tonic at the small building
    at the corner of Concord and Acton Street (there's a hairdresser there
    not called PHD)? I've lived on Acton Street most of my life and seem
    to remember this from a long time ago. I remember they had a really
    good birch beer, too :)

    Speaking of old bottles, I have a milk bottle from the Maynard Co-op
    that sits on the windowsill in our kitchen. It probably wouldn't make
    me rich, but it sure brings back memories of food shopping with my Mum
    at the Co-op [ of course I was very, very young then :) ] and the
    cream color and green milk delivery trucks. Those were the days!

372.6Historical artifact?SPIDR::HORRIGANWed May 20 1992 20:5911
    Ever though of donating the bottle to the Maynard Historical Society?
    The Maydale sign is on display in the collection.

    I think they have some bottles too, but maybe not that kind. If you
    want to donate it, talk to Liz Schnair accross the street at the
    newstand - she''l point you to Ralph Sheridan, the maynard sage.

    I went on the historical walk with my son's fifth grade class
    yesterday. There is a Maydale's advertisement on display in Paul's
    Bakery.

372.8wrong labeling?LUNER::DEROSASay it ain't so!Fri May 22 1992 12:2710
    Not to beat this thing to death, but I noticed a strange thing
    as I was showing the bottle to someone. Now, the bottle is defin-
    itely a 1 quart size. However, on the label and in the glass it-
    self it says "one pint, 16 fluid ounces". Since a quart is 32 ounces,
    I'm wondering if the labeling is a mistake and some bottles got
    through this way. Any comments?

    RE:a couple back. I'm gonna hold on to it for a while.

372.9Measure it?VMSDEV::WIBECANThe bull does not always loseFri May 22 1992 13:457

Why not measure its capacity (if it's intact)? Looks can be deceiving.

372.10which end of Glendale st.ASABET::TRUMPOLTLiz Trumpolt - MSO2-2/F3 - 223-7195Fri Jun 12 1992 19:5115
    In reply to Franks note on the location of Maydale I am wondering.
    My parents live on Deane St., so I grew up in that area.
    Frank are you talking about the end of Glendale that goes from Prospect
    St. down to the dead end or the end that starts at Acton St.

    The reason why I'm asking is because the only house that has a barn
    on the left that starts at the Acton st. end is the house that Mary
    Connerny lives in and the only house that has a barn at the other end
    is Grigas's. Connerny's house has the barn in back with a simi circle
    drive way around the house. Paul Cobley has an auto body shop in the
    barn know, at least he used to.

    just thought I'd ask.

372.11I'll get the correct house numberSENIOR::IGNACHUCKNative MaynardianSat Jun 13 1992 04:5112
    Reply to 372.10:

    Liz, I will have to take a ride down Glendale Street to get the
    exact location, but it seems to me that the Maydale Beverage
    Company was located on the left hand side of Glendale Street as
    you travel from Acton street inward toward the dead end at Pete
    Grigas' farm. It's only a couple of lots in, just beyond and
    opposite the Avis Rental. As I mentioned, there was and I believe
    still is a natural spring in that area that was used for the water
    for the tonic (soda in today's terms).

372.12might be the same placeASABET::TRUMPOLTLiz Trumpolt - MSO2-2/F3 - 223-7195Mon Jun 15 1992 19:507
    re. 11. There is a small patch of woods behind Mary Connerny's house
    that had a small stream running thorugh it. We used to play behind
    there when we were kids and I remember the stream being there. I don't
    know if it is still there of not and Connerny's house is about where
    you are stating in your reply. It is a few lots down across from Avis.
