362.0. "New Sign for the ELKS" by GOLF::GALVIN (Candlepins o..........!!!!) Thu Mar 26 1992 19:08

    No comments about the new sign in front of BPOE Maynard Elks lodge
    1568????

    The new sign went up a couple of weeks ago. It is one of those
    advertising signs that is constantly running public service and Elks
    announcements. In fact today, it was flashing the AVLL tryouts.

    The one thing I don't like about it, is that I find myself
    concentrating more on reading the sign than on the road. It only
    displays 2 lines at a time, so I see cars slowing down to read it.

    Anyway it is a nice sign, and another way the Elks contribute to the
    town (ie; town announcements)

362.1I like it but...WHYNOW::NEWMANWhat, me worry? YOU BET!Thu Mar 26 1992 19:383
I like it being there but I have the same complaint that you do.
I find myself reading the sign and not watching the road as I
am driving by.

You know, the Elks could do a lot more with their sign than just community
service announcements, and such.

Has anyone seen Steve Martin's movie LA Story? There's a sign by the highway
which gives him advice, things like "you should have asked her out".

That opens up lot of possibilities. The Elks sign could have Dear Abbey
style advice, "seek counseling", or they could do a Chinese fortune
cookie series of vague predictions.

I suppose that wouldn't help the traffic any, but it would be fun.

362.3Another thing for the signGOLF::GALVINCandlepins o..........!!!!Fri Mar 27 1992 15:1211
    Hopefully that new sign will be able to announce that Maynard will win
    the State Bowling Tournament.

    We are bowling this Sunday in Norwood. We were the state champions 2
    years ago, and plan on doing it again this year. The competition
    consists of about 200 teams from all over the state. Maynard
    definitley has the strongest team, in my mind.

    Expect to see that announcement on the sign, and wish us luck.

362.4SALLY, WILL YOU MARRY ME?SONATA::GOULDRoy GouldMon Mar 30 1992 14:2226
    Hi, I am the person who controls and programs the sign at the ELKS.
    It is our intent ot put community service type announcements on the
    sign as well as what functions, wedding, banquets etc that are going on
    for the week.

    If any one has an annoucement they would like to put up and it fits the
    guideline i.e. Community Service, non profit type of events, send it
    along to me @ OGO on All in 1 or SONATA::GOULD.

    Maybe like a previous note refrenced the Steve Martin movie, we could
    even see:

    			SALLY

    		    WILL YOU MARRY

    		          ME?

    We also will be lowering the sign by 2 feet and installing face lights
    on the ELKS LOGO portion of the sign within the next few weeks. At the
    moment all frames are up for 3 seconds, this may be to long and this
    week I will be changing the frames to 2 Seconds. Any comments are
    appreciated and welcome.

Oh thank goodness... The sign is fine, and the messages are a nice
service. But, I feel the sign is just too high. This play in two
ways, 1) it is esthetically too high and 2) you have to strain to read
it.

Glad to hear it's getting shorter.
