336.0. "vol. needed" by SPIDR::FILZ (DTN 223-2033) Tue Nov 12 1991 09:11

    The Board of Health is looking for volenteers to help out
    with leaf pick up on Nov 23. They need 24 stronge people to
    help load leafs in truck and stack them in the trucks.

    By doing this and not paying the trash pickup service the town
    saves approx. $5,000.00.

    If you are interested call the Board of Health and talk to Jerry
    Collins.

    With 24 people it should take approx. 1/2 a saturday morning

 What about liability? Didn't someone in here say something a while back
 about not being allowed to maintain a small portion of the "town's" real
 estate on their own time/at their own expense due to the potential liability
 of the town?

 Why is it perfectly OK now, and not before? I think volunteerism is (and
 should be) as American as apple pie. To discourage the citizens of any
 municipality from doing something on their own to better the community in
 which they live is tantamount to saying "you aren't the town, the government
 is, so don't interfere." Now the town is asking for people to help out.
 What a unique idea. One would hope it would catch on everywhere.

 It would be great if more cities and towns would sanction and encourage
 volunterrism. "Ask not what your [fill in the blank] can do for you..."

 And lawsuits? If one falls in his own home, does he sue himself?

    Call Jerry Collins at the BOH and ask him about the liability.
    I guess there is a possible liability here but if a person is willing
    to volunter that heor she takes the risk.

336.3Leaf Collection Update19119::IGNACHUCKNative MaynardianSun Nov 24 1991 01:4118
    The good news is that the second round of leaf collection took
    place on schedule today (Saturday).

    The bad news is that since only five people signed up to help,
    (I was one), the Board of Health decided to hire our Trash Collector
    to pick up the stuff, which will cost the Town about $2400.

    I'm not complaining since I wasn't looking forward to spending
    a Saturday picking up water soaked paper bags.

    In the future, the Town must make the Leaf Compost Area more
    accessible to residents so we don't have to spend tax dollars
    to pick up leaves. The Board of Health is aware of this and
    will be working to provide an adequate traffic pattern at our
    Leaf Disposal Area (off Summer Street, near Apple Ridge) to
    allow residents to deposit their leaves.

Well Thank Goodness for that. Having the ability to access the town
compost area will be a welcomed change.

1) It's difficult to rake the leaves on one's own schedule, and then
keep them in the bags and dry so they can be picked up.

2) I don't really see why we as a town have to incur the expense of
pick up when people could just drop them off.

Also, will we be able to deposit cut grass at the compost heap?
Personally, we can manage to compost all that we cut on our property,
but I have to believe that some people do not have the space and are
still working it into their trash.

336.5Not sure about Grass clippings19119::IGNACHUCKNative MaynardianTue Nov 26 1991 01:257
    Regarding.4, I suggest that we wait to see what the Board of Health
    has in mind. It may be that opening the compost area for grass
    clipping will be impossible, since it will have to monitored to
    avoid becoming a new town dump.
