312.0. "Training Center=Business Opportunity?" by MR4DEC::DERAMO () Mon Aug 12 1991 14:25

    Digital's training center (for both customers and employees) will be
    moving from Bedford to PKO in the near future. This could be a great
    opportunity for downtown Maynard merchants to capture lunchtime
    business -- and even dinner/evening business.

    Is there anyone looking into creative ways to get the students to visit
    downtown? I know there's a Digital-sponsored shuttle that runs between
    PKO and MLO. I wonder whether it can make stops on Main Street
    downtown as well. I also wonder whether there's adequate seating
    capacity to handle lunchtime peaks in ridership.

    How can Maynard businesses capitalize on this new opportunity? Can a
    downtown Maynard brochure/merchant listing be included in student
    information packages? Who at Digital can make something like this
    happen?

312.1How about lodging?SCADMN::FIELDSWed Aug 14 1991 20:4212

    	As I recall from my many visits to the Bedford facility there
      were always restaraunt listings on the video screen or on the
      bulletin board. I think its a good idea as well. People from
      all over the country traveling to Maynard should very well present
      some good business opportunities. Another thing I saw occasionally
      were flyers given to the students from the training center with a
      small map of lunchtime, and shopping areas. My only question is
      where do they think the students are going to stay??? Marlboro?

    I thought the Maynard Motel was closed for business.

    Has it re-opened?

312.5 B&B Opportunities MR4DEC::DERAMOMon Aug 19 1991 00:3410
    There's definitely a shortage of hotel rooms nearby. I know of only two
    places -- the Colonial Inn and the Howard Johnson motor lodge, both in
    Concord. There's more of a selection along 128 in Waltham, Lexington
    and Burlington.

    I imagine that local bed and breakfast places, if publicized to course
    enrollees, could do fairly well.

312.6B&B's are awfully expensive places to sleep...ASABET::HABERkudos to working mothersFri Sep 06 1991 16:293
    the only problem with Bed and Breakfast places [and there is one in
    STow] is that they run at least $80/night [and that's an inexpensive
    one!]
