224.0. "MAYNARD'S SQUARES" by SENIOR::IGNACHUCK () Fri May 11 1990 00:15

    After World War 1, the Town dedicated six squares in town in
    memmory of men who gave their lives for our country.

    I think that all the markers from this time still stand and
    are decorated each Momorial Day by the Legion and the VFW.

    The six squares are:

    Francis King Square- at the corner of Walnut Street and Main
    Street. My grandfather owned and operated a diner (McGovern's
    King Square Diner) on the bridge next to Gruber's for many
    years.

    Myles Teirney Square- at the intersection of Main Street and
    Great Road.

    George Daley Square- at the intersections of Maple, Brooks and
    Summer Streets.

    Edward Miller Square- at the corner of Main and Nason Streets.

    Ralph Panton Square- at the corner of Main and Summer Streets.

    Anthony Dzerkacz Square- at the corner of Concord and Summer
    Streets.

    This is a great tribute to these men, but except for the Veterans,
    and remaining relatives, nobody seems to notice these squares
    anymore.

    Wouldn't it be nice if the Mobil Station were known as Teirney
    Square Mobil? Or some store or restaurant in the center of town
    taking the Miller Square name?

    Or how about some group or individual adopting some squares?
    Daley Square has been improved by the revitalization and with
    some wood chips and regular care once in a while, could be
    really attractive. Same for Dzerkacz Square, with a couple
    of shrubs and a little TLC. Couldn't this be part of Maynard
    Pride days some year?

    By the way, DeMars Street has a similar bronze sign on the Waltham
    Street side. It was named for Frank DeMars, who was the first
    Maynard casualty in World War 1. The Legion is also named after
    him.

224.1Tie-in with Memorial Park?DINER::SHUBINQuestion everythingFri May 11 1990 13:138
    Is there any money left in the fund that was used to rebuild Memorial
    Park? It would certainly be appropriate to use any extra money from
    that work for fixing up the squares named for these veterans. (Of
    course, the idea of having extra money is probably a little
    farfetched!)

224.2Money is tightSENIOR::IGNACHUCKSat May 12 1990 01:008
    Hal, as far as I know, the Veterans Memorial Committee still hasn't
    raised enough money to cover the costs of the beautiful Memorial
    built during the past two years.

    If they did have money, your idea would be perfect. Anyone able
    to make a donation could include this suggestion.

224.3Thanks to Maynard MobilSENIOR::IGNACHUCKMon Jun 18 1990 00:1013
    I would like to thank the owner of the Mobil Station at Great
    Road and Main Street for taking care of Myles Tierney Square.

    I never knew Myles Tierney and I don't know the owner of the
    Mobil Station, but I will buy my gas there from now on in
    thanks to the owner, and will thank him next time I stop by.

    If you feel the same, mention this when you stop there.

    Efforts to beautify Maynard should be recognized.

224.4BUILD::MORGANMon Jun 18 1990 12:566
    I think Steve Jones is the owner, Frank. He at least runs the place.
    Besides upkeeping the Tierney Square, he does a great job as a
    mechanic. I don't know him other than talking when bringing our car
    there, but he's the fairest mechanic in town that I know of.

224.5Another vote for the MobilBIZNIS::MARINERMon Jun 18 1990 18:104
    He really was nice to me one day when I had car trouble. Even took me
    home.

224.6Mobil's new fenceCURIE::DERAMOWed Jun 20 1990 13:4712
    I'm disappointed that the Mobil station's new stockade fence has the
    picket side (nicer side) toward the station, and the rail side to the
    neighbors.

    I had always thought it was traditional -- at least among homeowners --
    for the owner of a fence to put the good fence side toward the neighbors.

    I do like the fence, however, and the abutters are probably happy with it
    too.

     the fence, you  new fence
224.7Mobil's fence?OLDJON::WATSONSome like it notThu Jun 21 1990 10:5310
Are you sure it's not the neighbor's fence? Because of its placement, I
just assumed it was.

Also, I always thought the direction it faced was more of a by-law of the
town (not just Maynard) that dictated which side -- the nicer one -- faced
outward from the property it bounded.

Anyone know for certain?

	Maynard has no restrictions on what side faces 'out'.
224.9I adopted a square19119::IGNACHUCKNative MaynardianTue Sep 24 1991 02:2713
    This past Sunday I officially laid claim to George Daley Square
    at the corner of Summer/Brooks/and Maple Streets by mowing it
    and cleaning up the litter. This is a beautiful little green
    space at a busy intersection, and was named for one of our
    citizens killed in action in World War 1. I never knew the
    man or his family, but I decided to adopt this square as an
    effort to show my pride in my Town and its' people. I hope
    that the remainder of the squares noted in 224.0 will be
    also "adopted" by others in Maynard.

    Every little bit counts.
    Best regards,
    Frank

          I was told I could not do that due to the liability to the
    town since I was not a town employee, I wanted to adopt the park
    across the street from Fowler Junior High.

224.11Adopting 19119::IGNACHUCKNative MaynardianFri Sep 27 1991 23:5515
    I have exchanged notes with Bob Cansler regarding .10 and I think
    the difference is what I am suggesting and what he tried to do
    relates to routine maintenance (as in mowing and trash pick-up)
    versus building and repairing structures (as in playgrounds).

    I can understand the Town's refusal for a private party to have
    permission to construct or alter playground equipment on Town
    owned land. If an accident occurs on a Town owned playground,
    the Town is liable regardless of who built it.

    As for grabbing a lawn mower or a trash bag and cleaning up an
    area, I consider it an example of Town pride.

    Regarding .12- I'm sorry Bob. I must have hit a nerve.

    May I suggest that we take this off-line?

    I'll send you a note.
