216.0. "Candidates' debates: yesterday and TONIGHT!" by DINER::SHUBIN (Question everything) Tue May 01 1990 13:50

There was a candidates' forum last night at MHS, sponsored by the
League of Women Voters of Acton/Stow. It was for School Committee
candidates. There is another one tonight for Select board members -- be
there! It's at 7.30 in the auditorium.

Attendance was pretty low last night -- only 2 of the candidates showed
up and there were only a few dozen audience members. John Comella and
Bob Geldart were the candidates present. John is running against Cindy
Ruzich (pick one for a 1-year seat) and Bob is running against Tom
Knoetzny and Cindy Parker (pick two for a 3-year seat).

The format was: opening comments, questions by representatives of the
Beacon and Middlesex News, questions from the audience and closing
remarks. The audience questions were to be submitted in writing (League
rules). That caused a little stir, and John Piantedosi stormed out
because he wanted to address the candidates directly. (I like that,
too, but at least I didn't embarrass myself.)

Otherwise it was a good forum. This is one of the best ways to find
about the candidates. If you're a voter in Maynard, you should show up
tonight to find out about your candidates. You've got to vote, so you
may as well know for whom you're voting.

216.1Candidates'Night Part 2SENIOR::IGNACHUCKWed May 02 1990 02:5018
The Selectman Candidates' Forum was held tonight, and followed the
same general format as the previous night. I was the Moderator,
and counted about 40 people in the audience.

    No one stormed out.

Three of the four candidates attended. Ken DeMars did not attend.

I was VERY impressed with the quality of questions from the audience,
and agree with Hal that this is an ideal way of finding out in one
night in one place where the candidates stand on the issues.

The League of Women Voters are more than willing to sponsor this
event next year, either through the Acton/Stow Chapter, or, as was
suggested, through a Maynard Chapter if one is started.

    Regards,
    Frank

On this topic -- don't forget to vote today!

Does the Clerk post the results somewhere, or do we have to wait until
the Beacon comes out on Thursday?

216.3I'd think Cindy or Steve Ruzich would have some resultsBUILD::MORGANMon May 07 1990 20:5210
    Re: .2

I'd imagine the results would be in tomorrow's South Middlesex News. I
think the paper hits the newstand around noon. I'm not sure if they'll
have time to break it down into precincts though, as the Beacon will
    Thursday.

I might be able to provide some of the results in the morning.

Paul's Bakery usually has the results posted on the wall in the
morning, in time for the morning rush.
