162.0. "Asparagus Farm" by AMUSED::PALLIES (Sheila) Wed Jun 21 1989 16:19

    Does anyone know if there's a relationship between Asparagus Farm in
    Concord and the one in Maynard? (Or is it in Sudbury? Maybe I'm
    asking in the wrong Notes conference.)

    One farm is on Rte. 62 in Concord, close to the Bedford line, and
    the other one is on Rte 117 in Maynard, close to the Sudbury line.
    They aren't farm stands -- they don't sell vegetables. There's
    just a farmhouse and a barn, with a sign saying Asparagus Farm on
    the barn.

    Because that's such an unusual name for a farm, I was just curious
    about why they both have the same name. Couldn't be just coincidence.

162.5it's "relatively" close to me...NETMAN::DISMUKEChocolate lips don't lie...Thu Jun 22 1989 19:0312
    You may be in luck -- my uncle owns the one in Maynard. It used
    to be a farm way back - when he first bought it he was restoring
    it back to it's original condition. I can get more details on it
    if you have specific questions. The place is really beautiful -
    he has since quit on the restoration (the old divorce bit), but
    he does maintain his property beautifully. He rents out space in
    the old barn for storage and lives there with his young daughter
    and various pets. If you ket me know what you want, I'll ask him
    for you.

    On a related subject, I've heard that the PK complex was built on an
    old asparagus farm. At one time, the greater Maynard area must have
    been popular for asparagus growing.

Is there an active asparagus farm nearby? Or even an individual
plot which might be visible from the road?

We think we might want to start a bed, but we want to know what
it looks like before we choose its location.

      It will look like a bunch of asparagus stalks sticking up out
    of the ground. Asparagus grows much like a weed, and if not
    cultivated regularly might start appearing beyond its garden
    boundries. I looked at some houses near old asparagus areas
    and where the lawn was not maintained, still had growing up
    wild.
