115.0. "Balloon over the pond" by SKETCH::BASSETT (Design) Mon Aug 22 1988 11:44

Did anyone happen to catch the sight of the hot air balloon over
the Mill pond this morning? Around 7:20am it started to hit some
trees near the pond, then from where I was standing, it looked liked
it was going to land IN the pond but it didn't. I think it touched
down in the lower Thompson street parking lot -- good thing I didn't
    park there!!

It was a really nice, close-up sight. The balloon was blue with
    big yellow-gold stars.

There were 7 different balloons that we counted over town.

We were in bed but got up to see what the 'pssssst' was. The entire
street was out in their pajamas looking up and pointing. Then we got
dressed and chased them all over town. It was hysterical, there were
all these station wagons full of families in night clothes driving
around.

Anyway, 3 landed in the parking lot. One did land in the pond,
floated over to the other side, and then popped up over the trees and
down again in the lot.

By the time the third one got there, there were hundreds of people in
the parking lot.

Do you know why they were out/who were they? Did one of the seven
balloons have a Digital logo on it?

115.3kinds doubt the logo, but ...MARKER::KALLISAnger's no replacement for reasonMon Aug 22 1988 14:1910
    Re .2:

Why they were out: optimum ballooning weather.

Whose were they: owned privately by balloonists. Some take off
at or neat Minuteman Field (Stow).

DSigital logo: didn't see 'em all; can't tell.

115.4Know where a couple came fromAKOV11::THORPMon Aug 22 1988 20:3510
One was from Aeronauts Unlimited of Lexington, the blue with yellow
stars. Another from Saturday morning was the Lime Rickey. It is
owned by a Westford resident. He and the balloon were featured in
the 18 August issue of the Beacon.

I was one of the many who followed the balloons to the parking lot
as I like to photograph them.

Speaking of photographing ballons, I also saw the balloon that morning
over the pond, and I was thinking what a great idea to find out when a
big outing is and go take photos. So, I tried to access the notes
file about ballooning, but no go.

Any ideas???

115.6Ballooning events calendarAKOV11::THORPFri Sep 02 1988 13:1710
The ballooning notes file has had server problems and is down more
than it is up. Be persistent in trying to get in.

Ballooning did publish a new events calendar which I will forward
to you. None of the upcoming events are in New England. There
was a meet in Pittsfield, NH the first weekend in August. Yankee
Magazine is a good source for local events.
