109.0. "About that Rod and Gun club..." by PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ (Jeff Lomicka) Tue Jul 26 1988 15:04

Does Sudbury's action against the Maynard Rod and Gun club endanger the
continued existence of the club, or only the "Sudbury portion" of the
club? How much of their land is in Maynard, and how much in Sudbury?

Now, I'm no friend of Guns, but besides giving the gun users a place to
go, the club owns a lot of "natural" land that, as a neighbor of the
Gun club, I'd prefer that they keep. My MAYNARD home is well within
earshot of the Rod and Gun club, and every day sounds like the 4th of
July, but I'd be much happier with the club behind my house than a
condominium project (thank you Hayes), or for that matter, I'd rather
have the Rod and Gun club than a subdivision of $500,000 homes.

Is there something I can do to be sure the club stays in business, or is
this problem out totally out of a Maynard resident's juristiction?

I don't think from what I've read that the club is in danger of
having to fold. As I understand it, the club was there for a long
time before the new homes were built and has that on it's side -
the homes were built and sold with all parties knowing full well
that there was a gun range in the neighborhood - I live on the other
side of town about 3 miles away and we also hear the shooting -
and believe me it doesn't offend me half as much as a hayes development
    does.

Look for the local paper this week for the latest news on this issue.
Last week's edition had articles and a letter to the editor on
this and it appears the gun club has won the first round. I don't
have any fondness for any gun, yet members have been running a
reputable club and have had few problems in the past with the town
    - so if that's their recreation - let them be......(if those people
only knew their $$$$$ homes were built on an old ammunition dump)!!!!

I will check the assesors maps to see what portion
of the Rod and Gun Club is in Sudbury.
When I was a kid in Bolton we used to go out
and target shoot all the time. We had our own private firing range.
My brother who still lives there has just recently had to give up
target shooting on his own property because of the half a Mil($)
houses being built across the street. The new neighbors haven't
complained about the noise yet but he's expecting the inevitable.
While I have my set of assesors maps out I will
look at abutting property in Maynard to see if there are any areas
around the R&G club on the Maynard side that could be developed
    and face the same problems.
I've considered joining the club just to show
some support.Chances are I'll never get around to shooting again.
If you live on the other side of town from
the gun club you might be hearing the artillery out on the military
reservation. They do make some noise over there. I think they have
practice manuevers.Think I'll start a file on the reservation if
there isn't one yet. It is a very interesting place.
