42.0. "A pizza this and a pizza that" by USWAV8::KINNEY () Mon Jan 19 1987 18:43

    OK, I've lived in Maynard and amm dying for a good pizza! I like
    both deep dish or regular. The only one I have sampled is the one
    in the Stow plaza. Who's got the best pizza in town and why. What
    are the prices like and does anyone deliver??

42.1A short drive from MaynardDRAGON::MCVAYPete McVay, VRO (Telecomm)Mon Jan 19 1987 22:3815
    The best pizza I've had anywhere isn't in Maynard--it's in Acton.
    Try the Mail Coach Inn on Route 2A, Acton. Go north on 27 until
    you hit 2A, then turn right. It's on the right about three miles.
    Or, if you prefer, go the other direction to the prison traffic
    rotary and take 2A: it's on the left about a mile.

    I don't like pizza; so if I think they're good, they are really
    good. Several pizza-lovers who have gone there with me have confirmed
    the impression. Their other entrees are excellent also; I've never
    had a bad or mediocre meal there. Their pizzas are a tad more
    expensive, though: about $5.00 a person.

    (There may be other pizzas just as good in Maynard: since I'm not
    a fan of pizza, I haven't tried any of the local spots for that
    dish.)

    Re/ .1:

    	If you don't like pizza, then your opinion of what's the best
    	may be totally different from anyone else's.

    As for the best around, you have to get out of Massachusetts to
    get any really good pizza. Here they think pizza came from New
    London.

    If you can't get out of Mass., try Pizzeria Regina, in the Burlington
    Mall, the North End, and other locations. Most of the other places
    around, including the <name_of_town> House of Pizza, serve Greek
    style, which has a thicker, usually oilier crust and less cheese.
42.3A local's opinion..SONATA::HICKOXThe walk of lifeWed Jan 21 1987 14:3552
    I've lived in this town a long time. The best pizza shop
    closed a long time ago, due to mis-management I guess.

    Critique:

    Super Sub/Pasta - Victory Plaza

            I've heard this is real good and I think they deliver
            on certain days and times.

    Papa Gino's - Purity Plaza (actually Acton)

            Good selection, a bit spicy at times though.

    Brother's - Downtown

            I think they should stick to fish although not
            sure even about that. If you like the Chef Boyardee
            type, this is the place, but there's a heavy coat
            of oil also.

    T.C. Lando's-

            Better subs, than pizza, but not bad.

    Maynard House of Pizza -

            Probably the most inexpensive. King of the frozen dough
            and they don't cut em' to well. This is wear I go when
            I want the most for the least and don't worry about the
            quality.

    I think that does it for the immediate Maynard area. On an overall
    scale of the state I rate as follows:

    #1 anywhere: Joe's Pizza, Market St. Northhampton, it is so good
                  it goes beyond description.

    #2 Pizzeria Regina's: any location, but Boston is the best.

    #3 All others: Pizzeria Uno's has great garlic bread if you like
       that.

    Hope this helps, perhaps you should try a different place each
    weekend until you get the cost, quality, and satisfaction you
    desire.
                                      -Mark

42.4My opinionsVIDEO::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaFri Jan 23 1987 14:3535
Clearly this is a personal taste item. We will all have different answers.
I love pizza, here's my list:

The best Pizza in Maynard is the stuff my wife cooks at home. We picked
up a copy of UNO's pizza recipe from someone who saw it on television.
It is a deep dish style, you make it in an 8" or 10" cast iron pan. If
there's interest, I'll look it up and post it for you.

As for commercial pizza, this is listed from worst to best:

I would have to be pretty hungry before I would eat at Maynard House of
Pizza again (Shudder). I've been there a couple of times and have not
been impressed. Cold, bland, chewy.

Although Tory's (T.C.Landau's to more recent folk) makes great steak subs,
I suspect they're pizza is pretty average. Since a friend of mine got
sick on their pizza once, I haven't tried their pizza, I stick to subs.
After all, they are right across from Brother's, which is by far the best
place to eat of any kind in all of Maynard.

I love Brother's pizza, although if you get pepperoni, be prepared to blot
the grease. MMmmm, love that grease! I am also especially fond of
Brother's spaghetti and meat balls. It is a spicy fare, but yummy.

Brother's tends to be very busy for lunch on Thursday, the traditional
pizza day of Terminals Engineering.

If you are willing to leave city limits, I would eat at Junior's in Acton,
in the same plaza as the Christian Book Store on Rt. 2A between Rt 27 and
Littleton. Don't ask for extra cheese unless you really mean it. There
was so much cheese I could hardly find the sauce. Their pepperoni comes
out crispier than anywhere else I've eaten, the cheese isn't stringly, and
there is very little grease. Good pizza all around. I would have it
take-out, however, because they don't offer much to drink.

    I really am getting a kick out of all of our different "tastes".

    Here's mine.

    The best pizza is at Pizza Hut, for my liking. ON route 2A in Acton.
    I never tried the Mail Coach, but I will. Lando's DELIVERS in the
    evening from 6:00 to 9:00. I like their pizza, thin crust, Italian
    style, and try a "steak pizza" for a new treat. I don't like Brother's
    at all, but then, I don't like Greek pizza.

42.6DITTO ON GREEK PIZZASONATA::HICKOXThe walk of lifeThu Jan 29 1987 19:049
    RE: .5

    Ditto on Greek pizza. I wandered all over Greece 3 years ago trying
    to find good pizza and was unsuccessful, couldn't wait to get home
    and have the real thing. Actually, about that time I was craving
    a McDonald's hamburger, can you believe it.

42.7Acton's service suckedDENTON::AMARTINAlan H. MartinThu Jan 29 1987 22:365
Re .5:

I've been there once. The service was incredibly slow, even for a Pizza
Slut. I don't think we'll ever go back.

    	Pizza is a passion with me. The Mail Coach in Acton is the
    only pizza worthy of the name within 20 miles of the Mill, my opinion
    of course.

    	Avoid Regina's in the various Malls, etc. except for the original
    pizza parlor in the North End (second best pizza in the U.S.), also
    subjective.

    	The best pizza in the U.S. can be had in Santarpio's across
    the harbor in East Boston.

    	Foe an extensive analysis of pizza see EATS note file.

42.9Rossini, East of MaynardBELKER::LUWISHSun Feb 08 1987 01:477
    Try Rossini on 117 at Nine Acre Corner in Concord, just a few miles
    east of Maynard. They are under the same roof (and ownership) as
    Michael's Restaurant. They make a good SICILIAN pie as well as
    the standard round kind, and use very fresh ingredients. No frozen
    dough.

42.10Papa Gino's in Stow PlazaEUCLID::PAULHUSFri Mar 27 1987 15:572
    I understand that a Papa Gino's and a hardware store are going in
    in the Stow Plaza (next to Star). - Chris
42.11Escape from the chain, gang.FILM::VLASAKWhat have you contributed to the deficit today?Fri Jan 15 1988 18:344
    Pizzas vary at any Pizza place. I've been to all in Maynard and
    eventually they all dropped by the wayside, except for T.C. Lando's.
    I'll go there with occasionaly trips to New London in West Acton
    for Canadian Bacon pizzas.
42.12turn, turn, turn ...ERASER::KALLISHas anybody lost a shoggoth?Fri Jan 15 1988 19:229
    Brothers has recently changed hands. Their pizzas have a little
    grease (from the cheese), but they're about the consistently best
    since the Village Pizza & Deli in Stow Plaza was forced to close
    (by a rent hike, I'm told) [though that really isn't in Maynard].

    Tory's has super sub sandwiches, but for my money, no world-class
    pizzas.

42.13What happened to T.C.'s?PRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaTue Jan 19 1988 13:5318
You actually EAT Tory's pizza? You must have a cast iron stomach!

Also, I've found their steak subs to be progressively diminishing in quality.
We have had a tradition of steak subs for dinner on Saturday night, and have
recently decided to quit. It appears that attention to quality has suffered.
Some recent symptoms:

	- Onions in my sub - even one will totally ruin the taste of the meat.
	- Cheese Steak with Mayonaise and Mustard turns into Mayoniase and
	 mushrooms. Sickening slimy things that ruin the sub.
	- Overcooked steak.
	- Dry steak.
	- "I'm sorry, were're out of rolls, you can't have a sub".
	- too little or no salt.

I absolutely love the steak subs they made last year, and would like to
encourage them to get their act together and return to their prior level
of quality.
42.14SantarpiosVAXRT::HOLTORFMon Aug 29 1988 15:006
                 THANK YOU WILLIAMS!
    I was trying to remember the name Santarpios. Not only the best
    pizza but a good family style restaurant. I don't get in there very
    often. It's one of those places we take out-of-towners when touring
    them through Boston.

42.15and in 1990 the best pizza in maynard is?ASABET::C_AQUILIAWed Nov 14 1990 12:127
    how bout now? what does everyone think the best pizza in maynard is?
    i had pizza express a few months and thought it was pretty good.
    tory's pizza's are too thin! never had one, but seen them while having
    a cheese steak sub. i agree that they are are going downhill. their
    sub rolls are always very fresh but the ingredients inside vary.
