243.0. "ISA Graphics card install for RSM" by NETRIX::"leyc@mail.dec.com" (Chris Ley) Mon Apr 07 1997 18:51

I have attempted to install Digital ISA Graphics Adapter (FR-PCXAG-BC)
in both MX6200 and ZX6200 to support RSM.

I have been unable to install this card successfully in either machine....

In MX6200 Video is Mono only...
In ZX6200 video is unreadable. Card has to be removed.

On both machines I have disabled the onboard PCI graphics first...

There are no installation notes with this card.

Is there a specific installation process to follow?
If so, why is it not documented?

If not, then has this card EVER been tested in these machines or have we
just made a statement that RSM requires an ISA graphics Adapter and picked
the only Digital ISA graphics adapter available????

I am trying to prove RSM in a major customer in UK. So far noone has been
able to give me any indication that this option has been installed, tested
and documented!!!

243.1Kevin has investigated this one.PCBUOA::BRACKENMon Apr 07 1997 21:272
    Ask Kevin McQuade and please, post his response. I'll forward your
    quest to him as well.
243.2Tested and working, and looking for...,PCBUOA::MCQUADEst*rs = 1x4x9Wed Apr 09 1997 21:5941

    	Yes..., this option has been tested, both by Server Options
    Engineering and Server Engineering QA.

    	I just rechecked this.

    	The only problem I have seen, and this might pertain to your
    installation, is: remove the jumper that enables IRQ2 (JP7) on the
    Speedstar. This manifested itself in a hung ZX6200 on POST, while
    polling the super i/o. This was a rather loaded ZX, so your milage may
    vary. The bottom line: remove the IRQ2 jumper.

    	I'm not sure..., how these boards are configured when we or our
    customers receive them. Any input from the field will be greatly
    appreciated. The original qualification boards were retail versions.

    	Rich was running an MX with RSM with no problems and I had no
    problems down in the LAB. Once I resolved the IRQ issue in the ZX, I
    was able to dial out and connect to my ZX and boot the Netware 4.11 SMP
    Server that is currently loaded on it.

    	I see no reason, regarding the Speedstar, why this configuration
    shouldn't work. I would like you take the PCB P/N off the artwork on
    the Speedstar and the BIOS Rev level and send that info to me.

    	Did you have these systems configured and up and running with
    onboard graphics before you attempted to install RSM? And have you
    tried another graphics card to verify that the status of the graphics
    cards themselves?

    	Although it's not my area, I'll check to see what the current
    status of installation documentation is. Both of these systems are
    autosensing, so..., the procedure is: install the Speedstar..., and it
    should come up displaying your BIOS screens, POST, and then boot the
    system when you turn it on.

    	I will post any further discoveries here. And..., we always
    welcome input from the field.

243.3RSM and Diamond Speedstar on ZXNWD002::MOODY_ROTue May 27 1997 23:0011
    I am having a problem using the FR-PCXAG-BC (Diamond Speedstar Pro)
    video card in a ZX. The server is up and running on the onboard video
    just fine. When I install the Speedstar I get nothing readable. If I
    take this Speedstar and install it in another system (Celebris desktop)
    it works fine. If I install a generic old VGA card (an old Tandy card I
    had laying around) it works. I have tried two Speedstar cards in two
    different ZX servers and no combination works. We are getting ready to
    roll out about 15-20 ZX servers in the next three months and this is a
    major roadblock. If we don't get this resolved soon, the best is we
    will not sell the RSM, the worst is the customers will go to Compaq.
    Any suggestions?
243.4Doesn't have to be a DiamondPCBUOA::BRACKENWed May 28 1997 12:045
    Did you disable the on-board VGA?
    It doesn't have to be a Diamond Speedstar that is only what was
    recommended but almost any ISA VGA card will do. Although, we have the
    Diamond Speedstar working on a ZX6 here. It could be that we have a
    diiferent model?

    onboard video was disabled.
