239.0. "GAM Asking for User/Password" by ALFSS2::OLSEN_G (Hey y'all, how y'all doin'?) Thu Apr 03 1997 21:31

    Question about the Global Array Manager.

    Never used this - barely know what it is. A customer installed it
    (seems successfull). When he went to use it, it prompted him for a
    usename and password - he didn't set one.

    1. I suspect this is a GAM problem - not serverworks - Right?
    2. Does anyone know how to get by this - or configure it properly?

    Thanks,

    Gary

	Indeed GAM issue.
	You can use either an normal NT user account, which allows
	you only to few.
	Or use a special account named gamroot, that has to become
	and NT administrator account, that allows you do make changes
	as well.
	Mind you that in a Domain structure you need to download the
	gamntfx2.zip patches on http://www.mylex.com or
	http://akin40.ako.dec.com.
	Without these patches you'll need to have in each local SAM
	this gamroot user account. (And you don't have a local SAM
	on PDC/BDC systems, which makes GAM not useable on a PDC or BDC)

239.2Same for non-NT OSPCBUOA::BRACKENFri Apr 04 1997 12:266
    You need to create a username "gamroot" on the server (for any OS) that
    you are trying to manage with GAM. Then when you log in through GAM
    you use the username "gamroot" and the password that you assigned if
    any. You need to use "gamroot" otherwise it won't work.
    Steve...

    I'll give this info to the customer.

239.4Netware - Not NT!ALFSS2::OLSEN_GReal Men Go Wireless!Fri Apr 04 1997 20:1421
     Woops -

        Customer is trying to view a Netware 4.11 server. Seems that he
    	can view the array but can't change - claims he is logging in as an
        administrator account (note: not supervisor). Sounds like a
        security issue with the netware account to me.

    	Trying to extrapolate from NT to Netware, I told him to create
    a gamroot account in Netware and give it supervisor privs and login as
    that account.

    	Apparently, you can't log in as a priv'd acct - you must make a
    priv'd account called GAMROOT. True?

    We also found a patch from mylex for Netware called GAM205NW.EXE (self
    extracting zip file).

        Thanks,

    	Gary
239.5Don't know about that one.PCBUOA::WHITECParrot_TrooperSat Apr 05 1997 18:0011

    Gary,

    I'm not sure if the GAM Software is supported in anything other than
    NT from Digital. I could be wrong, but check the README file that is
    in the ServerWORKS 2.2
    section of KIT on akin40.....in there is EVERYTHING one needs to get
    it to work, with the exception that our friend Ptorr has indicated
    with the two patches that could be applied.

239.6Supported but doesnALFSS2::OLSEN_GReal Men Go Wireless!Mon Apr 07 1997 18:0517
    Chet,

    The Docs all refer to install procedures for Netware - put the SW AGent
    on, run the GAM Client installation. Looked thru all the mylex stuff
    that you have on the web site - they all talk about installation and
    all the nice features, but none address this problem.

    Customer took a previous suggestion and created an account on the
    netware server called gamroot - gave it supervisor privs - no luck.
    Tried the supervisor acct - no luck.

    Again, he can view stuff, just can't make changes. Does anyone there
    know this or can test it or can query Mylex for an answer?

    Thanks

239.8Some things just can't be done.PCBUOA::WHITECParrot_TrooperTue Apr 08 1997 19:328
    If this is Manageworks 2.2 then there are some administrator
    things that can't be done.

    The functionality of what manageworks can and can't do is listed
    in the course materials on the WEB. Specifically, the Manageworks
    student guide in the Training section.

    Thanks Chet - I'll check it out. Supposing that making changes to the
    RAID array via GAM in ManageWORKS doesn't work - will Engineering
    accept a QAR or CLD to get it to work?

239.10What are the specifics?PCBUOA::WHITECParrot_TrooperMon Apr 14 1997 14:418

    You can't generate a QAR or IPMT on an external vendor supplied piece
    of code and expect Engineering to work the issue.

    What specifically are the changes that are trying to be made?
    We can ask for functionality, if not there.

    Chet,

    re:
    > The functionality of what manageworks can and can't do

    I assumed that it was a Manageworks problem that it won't recognize the
    login info from the GAM utility to grant access. That is, use GAM
    outside Manageworks, and it appears to allow you to modify (ie the
    login works), but within Manageworks, it never recognizes the login and
    thus shuts you out from modifications, so it appears to be a
    Manageworks problem in not functioning with the GAM login bits.

    That's what I was asking to be fixed.
