894.0. "ISDN Links stay when two B-channels used at the same time" by PRIVAT::OTTO (getting better all the time) Thu May 01 1997 04:41

Hello,

a customer has aprox. 30 DEC3000-300 Systems running Unix 3.0 and
ISDN V1.2 . (I know this is old an no longer supported)
The Systems are distributed all over Germany and use ISDN as Link to
connect to a central site DEC3000-300. They use only TCP/IP PPP Links over
the ISDN Lines. The remote systems make a connection to the Central Site
system, do some Data Transfer using standard UNIX Tools (FTP TELNET)
and when they are finished the connection is terminated
when the Inactivity Timer runs out.
This config was running fine for the last 18 Month.
(That's one of the reasons why they are still at this version)

Due to the increasing Traffic Demand it happens that the Central System
sometimes has two ISDN Links to two different sites.
Now they have a problem that whenever there are two ISDN B channels in
use they will not be terminated automatically but only after the customer
stops and restarts ISDN.

I have already convinced him to upgrade at least one system to UNIX 3.2x
and ISDN 2.0A, but without beeing sure that this problem is not lurking in
this version as well.

I have not found any mention of such a problem in the notesfile.
So I wonder if anybody ever came across such a problem ??

Thanks for any additional ideas

Hi,

Just to clarify, are you saying that if the customer ever uses both B-channels
simultaneously, that the inactivity timer fails to shut the link down?

Matt.
894.2Yes that's exactly the casePRIVAT::OTTOgetting better all the timeMon May 26 1997 21:0524
Hi Matt,

sorry to come back so late, I was on holiday.

I now have a bit more info .
They have upgraded a test system to
UNIX V3.2g and ISDN V2.0a.
When they make an outgoing connection to another UNIX system
running Unix 3.0 and ISDN V1.2 using ftp or telnet
the ISDN connection is terminated after the inactivity
timer runs out. If they have two outgoing connections from the
UNIX 3.2g/ISDN V2.0a system to two different other systems
the inactivity timer fails to shutdown the links. If they
shutdown the last link established ( after the timer for
both links ran out) both ISDN links terminate.

I think I need to IPMT this problem..
If You or someone else has no other ideas.

Best regards
