1239.0. "Das Boot" by CTHU26::S_BURRIDGE () Tue Apr 22 1997 16:57

This is playing in a local (Ottawa) cinema for 1-week, in a new,
expanded "director's cut" that is 210 minutes long. I've never seen
the movie, considered going last night, but was deterred by the running
time & went home and watched the hockey game on tv instead.

This note could serve as a place for discussion of both the original
release and the "new" one. I know many people consider the original
a classic of sorts. Should I try to get to the re-release before it
    goes away?

It's a classic to me. Originally it was a German TV mini-series
of 5 or 6 one hour parts. Later "Das Boot" with subtitles, then "The
Boat" in a dubbed version. Now some of the TV footage is spliced back
    in.

The only criticism I've seen came from a number of ex-U-boat crews,
who didn't like how they were portrayed. i.e the panic under depth
charging, the yelling, the accents, lack of discipline. I don't agree
with them. There may be a 1980's feel to some of it, though, something
that usually happens in this type of movie when the time view is 40
years on, that never sits well with old memories.

Technically it was very accurate, except for the final scene.

I saw the short version that came out in the movies. It was one of my all
time favorites.

You don't have to be a war buff to like this film. There's plenty of
character development and they do a really good job of talking about the
claustrophobic feeling of being on a WWII sub, the long terrifying stretches
creeping along silently wondering if they are going to live, the down time
between attacks, etc.

A depth charge attack was the one thing that was missing and I understand
that's been added to this version.

Just be prepared to cringe at the completely silly air raid sequence at the
end. I wouldn't say it kills the movie but it costs them a star IMHO

Lots of people complain about that attack but after sinking the Bismark it
was mostly allied air power flying out of England that did in the German Navy.

Is it the way that the scene was shot or the fact that they were attacked
by air that people don't like?

Well the U-boat bases were intensely protected by FLAK and I believe too
far for fighters to hit. Even if they got there subs would head
straight into the pens, protected by fighters.

It would be crazy to parade outside in daylight.

More realistic would have the U-boat caught by patrol bombers on the way
into port. By this stage they had to run into port at night only, and
soon had to stay submerged as well.

The only unreal prop in the movie were the T-6 Trainers (Harvards) used
    as the attacking 'fighters'.
