1127.0. "The Nutty Professor (Eddie Murphy version)" by POLAR::LARABIE (Slinky's kinked) Mon Jul 01 1996 08:21

Sorry if this is already in here.

Was watching Siskel & Ebert last night and they previewed Eddie
Murphy's new flick called "The Nutty Professor." They both gave it a
thumbs up and touted this flick as Eddie's comeback. From the previews
I saw it looks like it might be worth checking out on cheap night or at
    a matinee.

It had some pretty neat special effects in it as well.

For those who have no idea what it's about, I'll try my best on what
limited info I've got after the spoiler thingy.

What's everyone else think? Will this be Eddie's BIG comeback?

For those who absolutely need to know
kind of a spoiler I guess

The movie is about an overweight Professor who falls for a grad
student, but because of his weight, is afraid to ask her out on a date.
So he takes this potion thing in his lab which turns him into a ladie's
man. Problem is the formula is unpredictable and makes for some
    comical mishaps.

All this is courtesy of Siskel and Ebert.

Oh and Eddie plays quite a few roles in this one.

    	Interesting.

I just read a review over the weekend that said it was grossly
insulting, where Murphy insults the few remaining people he hadn't
yet ridiculed in his career (didn't specify which groups of
    	people).

It concluded by saying that it was the final nail in the coffin of
Murphy's "string of disasters" dying career.

Judging from his past work and looking at this film's trailers, it
didn't seem a too implausible review. I'm curious to see which
reviews strike home here gievn how much the reviewer disliked it...

It is my prediction that this movie will be a major flop.

    I second that prediction.

Eddie Murphy has had his time. Time to shuffle off into obscurity.

The critics (and so far the movie goers) seem to dis-agree.
Siskel & Ebert said the same thing Leno said last week,
"Eddie is back". And so far the fans agree, with this film
being being the top weekend grosser with ~$24M (beating out
Striptease, Eraser and Hunchback of Notre Damm).

Why, to some people, does "dislike" translate into "offence". I
haven't liked anything he's done since "coming to america" but I've
never been offended by his material. I just think his stuff has become
jaded now, remember when Steve Martin could do no wrong?
