1123.0. "Lone Star" by SSAG::LARY (teach 10,000 stars how not to dance) Mon Jun 24 1996 19:57

This is the new film by independent filmmaker John Sayles. I saw it Saturday
night in New York City (its only playing there and in LA right now, I believe).

This is one HELLUVA good movie. A multiple Oscar nominee, if there's any
justice at all. Great script, great direction, great acting, beautiful
photography.

What's it about? A lot of things - one of the admirable things about this movie
is its very BIG, but all the pieces are well integrated. Just be aware that
the first fifteen minutes or so need careful watching as all of the main
characters and scenarios are introduced. But I digress. Its about life in
a Texas county on the Mexican border and the interplay between its various
hyphenated communities (Anglo-, Mexican-, African-, and Native-); its about
a sheriff uncovering a forty year old murder where the main suspect is his own
father, the previous sheriff; its about small town politics, and reunions of
long-separated lovers, and reunions of long-estranged families. Mostly its
about being a prisoner of your history, or refusing to be one.

But the real strength of the movie is its characters. The present-day
characters are all real, believable people - well drawn and well acted. Some
of the characters from 40 years ago - the movie spends about 20% of its time
in flashbacks - are a bit larger than life, but this seems to be a deliberate
tactic in a movie so concerned with how the past affects the present.

The cast includes Kris Kristofferson, Elizabeth Pena, and several others whose
names unfortunately escape me. Francis McDermott (from Fargo) is in it playing
a minor character, see if you can recognize her.

See this movie. Pay big bucks if you have to.

I've seen previews of this on many many rental videos; So, I assume

The fact that an upcoming theatrical release is being advertised
by trailers on new video releases has nothing to do with when the
movie being advertised will be be out on video itself.

It's just another advertising medium :-)

I think the review in .0 says it all. This is now playing in
the small "art" theatres in the Boston area; I have NO IDEA why
it isn't getting a wider release. This is one of the best
movies I've seen in years, for all the reasons .0 listed. It
works as entertainment, mystery, history, and a lesson to learn.
Another dominant theme is "lines", "borders", "boundaries" --
what, where, why, to what effect; when can you change them; it
    goes on and on.

This is one not to miss. While the characters and plot will work
on the video screen, the sweep of the land, and the very imaginative
shifts to flashback scenes will work far better on the big screen.

I don't want to "oversell" and set expectations too high. This is
an well-crafted movie, and very much worth the time to find it in a
    theatre.

It also began in Toronto last weekend and got some fantastic reviews. I
have it on my list of "must sees". I believe the lead actor is Chris
Cooper - the only other thing I can think of that I've seen him in was
    "Lonesome Dove"

Saw this in Boston last night. A GREAT movie. Perfectly done.

The only nit is that, as .0 says, you've got to listen to the first few minutes
very carefully - I had trouble with the accents so it took me longer than it
should have done to figure out who was who....

Go and see it.

BTW, who's going to start the Trainspotting note? Any Brits up for it?

This is a GREAT movie. Outstanding. I saw it at the Wilton Theatre
Saturday night. I had some problems with the audio so it took a while
to figure out who was who, so I'll catch it on video too.

The movie vaguely reminds me of "Short Cuts" the way it integrates
multiple intersecting lives. In this case the events occur "across"
    time as well as contemporaneously.

    Highly recommended.

I've seen over 140 movies this year. This is the first one I plan to see
twice. Need I say more? Oh -- I love the way the characters are saying
one thing with their words, but something completely different with the
subtext. A marvelous script from Sayles, combined with subtle direction and
nuanced performances.

Incidentally, if you get a chance to see Chris Cooper in Pharaoh's Army (it's
a Civil War story, despite that awful title), do so.
1123.10What an ending...ORION::J_CROCKERTue Jul 30 1996 22:083
The ending is a beaut, and Sayles has got the best love scene I've
ever seen (that *I've* ever seen, okay -- if someone wants to start a
debate on love scenes, do it somewhere else, please 8-).

I'm mostly in agreement with other noters here that this is
a fine film that should please most "art-film" movie-goers.
But it's not perfect.

"Lone Star" is a therapy drama, and by this I mean it's about
people getting in touch with their feelings. It's sentimental.
Sayles mixes soap opera with a murder mystery and some
Tex-Mex diversity stories. This is all good, but I felt a
comfortable detachment from the ethnicity hardship angle. I think
this is because, for me, Sayles is a bit too comfortable.

Most of Sayles' characters ring true, but some scenes are
overwrought (Sam's visit to his ex plays like an acting class
experiment). Perhaps with this in mind, the critic for TNR
said that Sayles needs discipline.

Lone Start is the best John Sayles film I've ever seen.

Did you ever see Secret of Roan Innish?
Lone Star was typical Sayles (and I liked it), but
not like Roan Innish which is unlike any other movie he's made.

For those interested in checking this out, it's going to be on the PBS station
in Boston (WGBH, channel 2) on Wednesday night, September 4th. 9 or 9:30
I think.

Sorry for the quick side track.

I've seen a lot of movies this summer, around a dozen, and I've had to
change my best list twice in the past two weeks, first for "Tin Cup",
now for this, simply the best movie of the summer.

The story is wonderful, the plot unique, the acting uniformly
excellent, but it's the direction of Sayles that makes this movie stand
out. He seamlessly moves us from the present, back 40 years, and into
the present again. We wonder why a character is shown at a certain
time, and it falls into place later. The ending is one surprise, then
another that I never saw coming.

I have been a huge Sayles film since "The Return of the Secaucus
Seven", so I wasn't surprised at how wonderful this film was.

I liked this movie a lot. I've always liked "who done its" and I really like
stories that move across time. This does both really well.

Good acting, good directing, the works. Was the lead actress the same one
that played Shannon's secretary on the TV show "Shannon's Law"?

I wouldn't be surprised if the actress in this was the same as in the
TV series "Shannon's Law". John Sayles was the screen-writer (and
originator?) of the series, and he tends to use a lot of the same
actors. (I had forgotten about the series until you mentioned it.)

I never got to see this in the theater, but it's now out on video.
See it if you can.

The movie reminded me very much of a play. Each scene starts and ends cleanly
and then the next is interleaved. I could almost imagine the lights dimming as
the next scene started. The characters were rich and believable, the story and
dialogue very good. The most amazing parts were the seamless segues between past
and present.

I don't think I've seen any other Sayle's-directed movies, but I think I may
have to check them out.

John Sayles is one of the very best directors working today. If you go
to check out his films, PLEASE start with "Return of the Secaucus
Seven". It is a tremendous little film, full of wit and wisdom and
real people, unlike its obvious rip-off "The Big Chill", which simply
pales in comparison. Other films by Sayles that you will enjoy include
"Brother from Another Planet", "Matewan", and "Eight Men Out".
Actually, you won't go wrong with any John Sayles film.
