1119.0. "Predictions for next summer blockbuster" by GUMSHU::S_COLLINS () Sun Jun 23 1996 08:39

THIS SUMMER HAS SEEN A FEW BIG FILMS ALREADY. "TWISTER" WAS THE FIRST
OUT OF THE GATE. THEN CAME "MISSION IMPOSSIBLE". WHAT'S GONNA BE THE
BIGGEST? IF WE LISTEN TO THE WORD OF MOUTH, I GUESS IT'S GOING TO BE
    "INDEPENDANCE DAY".

IS IT A PREDICTABLE SUMMER WHEN IT COMES TO BOX OFFICE SCORES?
OR IS ANYTHING POSSIBLE? MOST OF THE TIME WE HAVE A CLEAR VIEW OF
WHAT'S GOING TO HIT BIG WITH AUDIENCES. THIS SUMMER IS NO EXCEPTION.
BUT, WHY ISN'T THERE A FILM TO KEEP PEOPLE HYPED UP ABOUT. "I.D."IS THE
NEXT SUREST THING TO BEING THE SUMMERS MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE.
BUT IT'S NOT GETTING THE PRESS LIKE SAY FOR INSTANCE, JURRASIC PARK, OR
A BATMAN, OR AN INDIANA JONES FILM.
THE REASON BEING: 'FOX' THE STUDIO RELEASING THE FILM IS PLAYING IT
SMART. THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE PEOPLE GUESS. GUESSING SOMETIMES CAN BE
BETTER FOR A FILMS RELEASE THAN SAY OVERHYPING A FILM.
EXAMPLE: BATMAN RETURNS WAS SO OVERHYPED THAT PEOPLE THOUGHT THAT IT
WOULD OUTDO THE FIRST MOVIE IN THE SERIES. AND WHEN THE FILM OPENED
PEOPLE FLOCKED TO SEE IT IN ITS FIRST WEEKEND. BUT WHEN WORD OF MOUTH
GOT OUT ABOUT IT BEING INFERIOR TO THE ORIGINAL, PEOPLE BACKED AWAY,
CAUSING IT TO HAVE MINOR SUCCES COMPARED TO THE ORIGINAL.

SO I THINK IT IS SAFE TO SAY THAT WE WILL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE!

NEVER KNOW --- INDEPENDANCE DAY COULD COME OUT AND
BREAK ALL RECORDS. OR COULD FIZZLE AFTER ITS FIRST WEEKEND.

MY BET, IT'S GONNA ROCK THE BOX!
                                           (OFFICE, THAT IS)

I believe that Independance Day will be BIG, and I mean BIIIIG ! In the wake of
the huge success of The X Files, we're just ripe for a paranoia-type "the aliens
are coming to get us" sort of movie. War of the Worlds all over again, I feel.

I can see the merchandise now. Little rubber flying saucer keyrings,
    ray guns. Alien lunchboxes.

    Oh boy.

I was playing pool last night, and on the TV there happened to
be what was a very convincing "special report" of alien sight-
ings over Europe, and the Air Force being involved and trying
to make contact with the spacecrafts, etc., etc. Very conv-
incing when tuning in to the middle of it, until the White
House blew up, of course. 8^)

Remember the story about the radio version of War of the Worlds which had Orson
Welles' starring, y'know the fake news report that people actually believed and
caused mass panic ?

I say again, ID will be BBBIIIIIIGGGG !

When I 1st heard the "special report", I said to the guy next
to me, "Either this is real or it's another 'War of the Worlds'".

And if anyone thinks he's kidding... I was in Toys 'R' Us over the
weekend, and there was an entire section devoted to all kinds of
"ID" toys, action figures, guns, spaceships, and so on. Right
across the aisle from the Hunchback Department. :-)

I was amazed... I hadn't figured this to be a "kid movie", involving
toys, merchandising tie-ins, slap-happy meals, and so on.

I doubt if it will be that big, as well. But I would go so far as to say *one*
of the biggest grossing movies ever, but not necessarily *the* biggest.

Have I said that it will be big, yet ?

Well, here's something to make you go 'hmmmmmm'.

There are scalper's out there selling tickets to ID4 for $20 per
ticket. I heard it on the radio. I didn't catch which country this is
happening in, but it's somewhere where ID4 hasn't been released yet, or
    has just been released.

The scary thing is that people are actually buying them!!!!
