1085.0. "Secrets & Lies" by PGREEN::FLINTM () Wed May 22 1996 11:26

I am glad to see that Mike Leigh is yet again the toast of Cannes. I
can't wait until his new film 'Secrets and Lies' comes into the
cinemas. Apparently it's better than his last film 'Naked' (also a Cannes
winner in 1993) which lists as one of the best films i've ever seen.

Yet again this proves that the UK does still make extremely good films
(even if they have to find funding abroad).

    Hurrah for Mike Leigh!

I wasn't sure about "naked", a little too dark and depressing for me.
I hope "secrets and lies" will be better.

"Secrets and Lies" is brilliant. Brenda Blethyn's Best Actress
award was well-deserved. The Brits should stampede
the theatres there where it opened last week. The rest of us
have to wait a bit longer :-(, although
I don't know how well this will play to American audiences and
    in other geographies.

It's been a good year for British film so far.

I have finally got to see this film.

This is Mike Leigh at his very best. It is a cross between Leigh's Life
is Sweet and High Hopes. It is very very different to Naked.

The film revolves around Timothy Spall's character, who doesn't look
too unlike Leigh himself, and his family and his sister and her
    children.

The film is witty and very clever. This is Mike Leigh's best film to
    date without a doubt.

    ***** out of *****
