1020.0. "Alan Alda" by BOOKIE::chayna.zko.dec.com::EPPES (Nina Eppes) Tue Jan 23 1996 20:29

This is the official topic for discussing the actor Alan Alda.
The first few replies were moved from the "Canadian Bacon" topic.

Please try to concentrate on Alan Alda's film performances and not
get into detailed discussions of TV series (e.g., "M*A*S*H").

Thanks.

This has to be one of John Candy's worst films.

Just not that entertaining, nor that funny.

       Just a lame movie overall.

Maybe cause I just can't stand Allen Alda.

I think maybe Alan Alda's shelf life expired several years ago and that
he hasn't gotten the message.

Even Phil Donohue is calling it quits at the end of this TV season.

Being a sensitive man just ain't what it used to be. There's no money in it.

I have never been a big Alan Alda fan (except for Mash) but
I did like the movie "Same Time Next Year" with Ellen
Burstyn. It is about a couple that have a once a year
fling the same weekend at the same cottage by the sea and
it is interesting how you see them change over the years.

He was a jerk in "And the Band Played On", but he did a great
    	job at it.

I seem to recall that in "The Four Seasons", Alda himself couldn't make
up his mind whether to be good or bad. I've never seen a movie that
gave a star that much lattitude in the quality of his acting between
the high points and the low. Then again, I guess he directed it, so that
would explain...

Then again, "The Four Seasons" was generally a pretty sappy movie.

The comment I have about Alan Alda is that no matter what part he has,
it's the same character. Now, granted, I haven't seen everything he has
done, but certainly the ones I have seen... Four Seasons, Same time
Next Year and a few others - he's the same character as he was for MASH
but with different names and in different settings.

However, that aside, Four Seasons and STNY are 2 of my "top 20 movies"
and get watched at least once a year.

He was in a TV movie about AIDS where he played an ultra egotistical and
abusive Research type Doctor. It was about as different from Hawkeye Pierce
(was that the name?) as you could get and he played the part very well.

I agree we're not talking tremendous range but he's not bad.
