Not to go too far down the rathole, but...

"Another Brick in the Wall" (pts I, II and III) is from "The Wall", not
"Dark Side of the Moon".

Farther down this bottomless pit of a rathole...

It's not the number 1 selling rock album of all time. It's the album
that spent the longest amount of time on Billboard's Top 200 chart.
It's been there continously since its release, unless it fell off in
the past few years. But greatest number of albums sold, no.

I think Michael Jackson's "Thriller" still has that honor, fol-
    	lowed by Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors".

That's funny, I heard on the radio once that it had passed one of the Beatles
albums (Abby Road I think) to become the #1 best selling record of all time.
Maybe they were having the same argument at the radio station.

And "Another Brick in the Wall" is not about the Berlin Wall.
952.6SLEEPR::MAIEWSKIMon Oct 09 1995 14:058
Well again, must be dueling opinions.

A few years back when the Berlin wall was being torn down I heard a report
that they gave a concert in Berlin and sang that song because it had been
written about the wall. There was something about them knocking down a wall of
Styrofoam bricks in a symbolic gesture of the real wall being knocked down.

The "wall" refered to in Pink Floyd's album "The Wall" is the
psychological and emotional barrier which the protagonist has built
around himself. It is not a reference to the Berlin Wall.

The song was written in the late '70's and had to do with the
institutionalization of minds and souls, such as that which happens in
the public school system. The theme was along the lines of conforming
in a way that would continue to support the establishment (being
another brick in the wall). This could apply to the Berlin wall, but
it could also apply to the American public school system, corporate
culture, the current conservative bent in America, the
straight-jacketing of the mind during the '50s, or any other kind of
    enforced conformity.

They played it at the Berlin wall 'cause, well, um, it does have the
    word wall in it.

If you saw the film, you saw a lot of English school students in their
uniforms walking in a line and they all had the same face.

    Who are the Red Sox?
952.11SLEEPR::MAIEWSKIMon Oct 09 1995 16:4013
The Red Sox are a baseball team that last won the Championship the year after
the revolution of 1917 that brought the Communists to power. This revolution
enabled them to build a wall a half century later while the United States was
building a space program that took us to the moon despite the setback during
the Apollo 13 mission. Meanwhile the band Pink Floyd wrote a song about a wall
which some people claim is based on the Communist wall while others say it has
a more philosophical meaning. The space program ended, communism ended, the
wall came down, Pink Floyd played a concert, people got confused about the
dark side of the moon, and still the Red Sox have not been able to win another
championship.

But we go to the games anyway, they have to give us that.
  George
952.12PCBUOA::BELLOWSMon Oct 09 1995 17:056
Thanks for clarifying that, but you left out the bit about Roger Waters
leaving the band (was it before the concert, or after? For some
reason, I think he was the only PF member there, but then I have
    trouble remembering yesterday).

Well, this moderator was on vacation, and another one (Dave Wiegleb) has been at a
conference. I asked Jeff Michaud to keep an eye on things in the meantime.
I assume he created this topic to try to keep the file IN control. :-)

Please try to keep the discussions related to MOVIES. There are other notes
files for trivia, music, baseball, etc. etc. See the notes file

So by your argument, are languages that have different genders for different
nouns sexist ? Should we consciously mangle our language just make it PC ?

 	"actor" is already gender-neutral.
Not only that, but "-ess" isn't diminutive, it's female.

the whole idea that because its female is diminuitive is a load
    of Horse Hockey!!
That's just in your own mind! And if you choose to propogate that
attitude by butchering the language to prove a point, well that's
your choice but I think by doing that, you are becoming what you
    claim to dislike.

I don't go to church or sing hymns, so couldn't comment ! We all know that
language does evolve over time, but mangling it to prove a point is another
thing entirely.

I'll shut up now before I go completely off topic (more than I already have)...
