941.0. "Heavy" by TROOA::BUTKOVICH (blink and I'm gone) Thu Sep 14 1995 20:54

I always try to choose a couple of movies a year that won't likely
come to the theatres. Last year, a couple of fantastic movies that
saw very limited theatrical distribution were "Once were Warriors",
and "Flight of the Innocent" - good rents if you get the chance.

Wasn't quite as lucky with my selections this year:
Heavy (** out of *****) - I choose this one because of the cast -
Debbie Harry (from Blondie), Liv Tyler (Steve's daughter)
Shelley Winters and Evan Dando (from the Lemonheads) and in fact,
they were all very good. The trouble is that the story and dialogue
were so sparse that I almost fell asleep in the middle of the movie.
The story involves an overweight and painfully shy adult man (Victor)
who works in a bar owned by his domineering mother. Winters was
actually fairly subdued which must be a first. Harry plays Delores,
a tough-talking veteran waitress and Tyler is Callie, the beautiful
college dropout who shows up and takes a job as a waitress. Dando
is her boyfriend. Victor develops an immediate crush on Callie, but
can't bring himself to tell her. Instead, he has an active fantasy
    life. A very quiet movie.

Saw this at "The Coolidge" moviehouse in Brookline this
past Saturday. A year after the base noters review !! I guess
the truck that delivered the film to the Boston area was as
slow as the movie was !!
Really was too bad though, Great acting but painfully slow
       film.

                                                 jt

        p.s. Ana liked it though

well, in order to Defend my Good Movie Name.....

Yes, the movie was indeed slow, there were no explosions, no aliens,
no high speed chases and no one shooting up heroin. There wasn't even
a lot of dialogue, which is what Jeff & crew objected to the most.

I took the movie more as a vehicle for the actors to JUST ACT, and as a
challenge for them to show us how they are feeling without a lot of
dialogue. The good actors were able to do that for me (i.e. everyone
but Debbie Harry) and I felt the anguish of the painfully shy lead
character and Yes, I really enjoyed this movie. Would recommend it
Hands Down over Stealing Beauty any day.

So Jeff, maybe you should see it again....?

    :)
