914.0. "Mortal Kombat" by LUDWIG::SSHEA () Mon Aug 21 1995 16:14

I had the opportunity to see Mortal Kombat this weekend due to my son
having his buddies over for his 10th Birthday party and him wanting to
bring his friends to see it. Now... I have never played any of the MK
games (Nintendo or arcade, etc), do not know any of the characters, and
really nothing about it other than it's like Street Fighter which my
son plays and which I took him to see the Van Damme movie.

So, going in I expected non stop fighting, little story, and limited sets.
I must say that for a kids movie (PG-13) it was rather enjoyable. There
was a story about why there was this big tournament of fighters and the
fallout should the "good guys" fail. There was enough of the characters
background for you to care about them (as much as you want to in an
action film) and most of the actors seemed to know their martial arts rather
    well.

The sets and the special effects were what I liked the most. Everything
was large, dark, sinister, and even mystical. The mood was very well
set with this combination and it carried on throughout the film. The
best effect I saw was with the character "Goro" (I'm guessing the
spelling) who was the huge 4 armed creature. How they did this
character was impressive. It didn't look like a model or a robot in the
shots of the movie but it had to be some combination of that and
computer help to boot. It certainly looked pretty real and had all the
    kids in the audience tense.

Anyway, for those that like the action/adventure/fantasy type films I
would say that you would like this (much better than Street Fighter if
you have seen that). It's a fun movie to watch (comic relief thrown in
here and there) especially if the audience is filled with kids shouting
"Alright, it's Sub Zero", or "Beat him Johnny Cage". Alright, so by the
end of the movie I knew all their names (there's still a kid in me too).

***1/2 out of 5 (for action movies)

    	Wasn't Sub-Zero a "Running Man" character?

914.2How bad is the gory violence?ODIXIE::MOREAUKen Moreau;Sales Support;South FLMon Aug 21 1995 18:4711
My entire family (son 7, daughter 10, and my wife and I) enjoyed "Street
Fighter", and I had no problems with the level of violence and gore in
that movie. But I have extreme reservations about this movie because of
the extreme blood-and-guts gore factor of the video game (people getting
their still beating hearts ripped out, etc).

Any comments? Thanks in advance...

(whose kids are begging him to let them see it, but if it is anywhere
near as gory as the video game, the answer is *NO*!)
914.3Very low on the gore factorLUDWIG::SSHEAMon Aug 21 1995 19:2535
RE .1 Yes, Sub-Zero was in "The Running Man", but this one is much
    different, trust me!

RE .2 Ken, No problem in the gore factor with this movie. I also had
the same reservations about the movie based on what I had heard about
the game (my son was not allowed to play it and I hadn't seen it
played). The action is almost all kicks, punches, drops, etc (a-la
Street Fighter). There is no pulling out of hearts or anything like that.
The main reason I think it got the PG-13 rating was due to the fact that
you knew the people were getting killed, not just knocked out. I
brought 3 of my sons friends with us (all 10 year olds whose parents had
given me to OK to bring them) and I was a little leary about what may
be shown but after it was over I told my son I would buy him the video
movie when it comes out. Also, the next day I let him rent MK for the
first time. Again, it was just like Street Fighter. I do know they have
different versions of MK games and some get very graphic, this one did
    not.

If you go see this let me know if you agree so I know I on the same
    wavelength as other people.

When a fighter lost a fight, the main bad guy (can't recall his name)
would take his soul. This was shown by a ghost-like appearance of the
dead fighter coming from the body and floating into the main guys eye.
He gets his power from all the souls of dead fighters.

There is a scene with "Reptile" where after he is killed he turns into
a pile of worms and centipedes, etc. Kind of gross but not too bad.

Another scene where Sub Zero freezes a guy and he shatters leaving only
his head (looks like a statue though).

I saw this movie not long ago and found it entertaining. One thing
i didn't like was the entire beginning of the movie....it didn't fit
in with the rest of the movie at all style-wise. The beginning was very
lound and violent with gun fire etc. By contrast, the rest of the movie
was very well done and wasn't gory at all. You do get to like the
    characters and cheer for them.
You may even find yourself humming the Mortal Kombat dancetrack music
by the time you leave the theatre!

If you like the game, you'll probably like the movie, however
I would not recommend it to someone who is not familiar with
the game. Personally I enjoyed it, even if it is a little bit
    cheesy.

I had played the game many years ago, once...but still liked the movie.
I don't think you need to know about the game to see the movie.

Finally decided to rent this out! Always wanted to see it but each
time, I found something I wanted to rent out more! But I'm glad I have
    seen it now:

It was 'naff' - no doubt about that - but it was extremely FUN and
loadsa fighting and not too gory!! Someone noted earlier that it's a
bit cheesy - it is but once you accept that - it's most enjoyable!

Thoroughly enjoyed it as a bit of entertainment!!

    Great!
