863.0. "Prelude to a Kiss" by REGENT::POWERS () Tue Jun 27 1995 13:59

In 342.27, Mark Saxby comments that there's not topic for "Prelude to a Kiss"
in this file. Well, there is now. There was also one in the old MOVIES notes
file, but it didn't survive the crash.

I loved the movie, and I'm not a fan of romantic comedy.
It has some depth of personality, and there is a philosophical twist that
isn't typical of such films. I think the casting was excellent, with Meg Ryan
and Alec Baldwin as the lead couple. The film is very faithful to the play
from which it was derived, the playwright (whose name escapes me) also
being the screen writer. It translates well from stage (which I have also
seen) to screen.

863.1Ok, but not great?UNTADI::SAXBYTue Jun 27 1995 14:3122

As I get STAR BILLING in note .0, I'll post my views :^).

I thought this was an OK film. Certainly not bad, but a little
    unsatisfying.

I, contrary to Tom, couldn't help thinking that Meg Ryan was cast
because she was cheaper/younger/more available than Goldie Hawn (who,
btw, I hate, as a rule). She looked like her, behaved like her and the
whole role she played seemed a PERFECT Goldie Hawn (I'm so cookie!) role.

Some of the family scenes were mildly amusing, but being described as a
romantic comedy, I'd hoped for a little more comedy.

I'm interested that it's based on a play, as I can see how it would be
much more entertaining in such an environment. I didn't think the film
    was really 'filled out' enough.

Depth of personality? Philosophical twist? I'm interested in what you
mean by these comments, perhaps you could expand behind a spoiler?

What was this movie about ?

As I recall, Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan get married. At the wedding, an
old man asks to kiss the bride. When he does, a sort of transmigration
takes place. Alec has to figure out how to undo it.

I thought this movie was really sweet. After Meg and the old
guy kiss and switch identies, it takes awhile for their
families to figure it out. The catch is, that the old
guy was dying and Alec has to figure out why his once
vibrant love seems to be fading away. I remember being quite
moved watching some of the touching scenes where Alec
is desperate to get his wife back.

The film is an allegory for when a relationship undergoes a dramatic
change. It's even allegorical for when one person in the relationship
gets a debilitating disease. How does the unchanged partner cope? How
does the relationship survive? or does it?

I thought it was excellent and that Alec Baldwin was terrific in this
    role.

I also loved this movie. I thought AB was so wonderful and real and I
don't always feel that way about him. MR was good, this was made long
before she became a giant superstar so I thought she wasn't "as aware of
herself" as she seems to be these days. A good rental.
