837.0. "Die Hard With a Vengeance/Die Hard 3" by WMOIS::TARDUGNO () Sat May 20 1995 14:14

    Die Hard
with a vengence opened at the theatres last nite

Bruce Willis is back and this movie with all the previews looks
as good as the first one.

Alan Rickman (dead bad guy from the first Die Hard) has a
vengeful brother, Jeremy Irons. From what I've seen it looks
like a great part for him.

Storyline goes, he starts playing Simon Says with John McClaine
and buildings blow up, trains derail, and Malton from Entertainment
Tonite gave it a big thumbs up!

Can't wait. to see this tonite....

I can't even tell the difference between 1 and 2

Sort of like Rocky 1-7 or what ever

    Maybe like Friday the 13th

good movies maybe they should just change the idea of them

FWIW, Siskel gave thumbs down and Ebert thumbs up.

Siskel said DH2 was on his top 10 list for the year it came
out, and that he enjoyed the 1st DH, but just didn't like
	the story of DH3.

Ebert on the other hand also said the story was not great,
but that the film really delivered on the action part,
which is the primary thing this film is supposed to be,
by giving not just one spectacular explosion scene (or
maybe just action scenes?), but seven (7).

BTW, I haven't seen the film yet, but from the clips they
showed on S&E, the plot looks like a combination of "Speed"
and "Blown Away"! .0, am I on target?

That's EXACTLY what I was thinking when I saw the previews, but
it's not really too much like "Speed" in that the action doesn't
take place in 1 primary location [bus or train]. It's everywhere.

It is similar in content to "Blown Away", in that a maniac with a
gripe against the main character is threatening to blow things up
[which is actually the case in "Speed" as well], but this one has
that "Die Hard" feel to it with the [at times] unbelievable stuff
that happens to him, as well as the [at times] unbelievable stuff
he does to get himself out of trouble.

Excellent movie, I thought ... Samuel L. Jackson is great as the
    	civilian assistant.

Newspaper write-up said that DH3 was originally going to be Lethat
Weapon 4. They just changed the names and voila ---

My sister saw this over the weekend and she said it was great. Very
action packed but the whole time she watched the movie she said she
couldn't help thinking of the Oklahoma bombing. I think that feeling
will keep this movie from be a true blockbuster summer movie like it
    was expected to be.

I'll probably try to catch a matinee of it.

Saw "Die Hard With A Vengeance" this weekend and enjoyed it for the
most part. It certainly had a lot of action and I liked the interplay
between Willis and his "partner". And the sound was awesome. I forget
the name of the sound system, but they had multiple LOUD speakers and
they made it so it sounded as if cars and things were actually moving
past the audience. It was cool. Good music too.

There was something a little disappointing about this movie though.
It's hard to put my finger on it, but it seemed perhaps too contrived,
or like there were just too many coincidences for belief.

If you like action, if you liked Die Hard I and II, and particularly
if you can go to a matinee, it's worth seeing. I'm not sorry I went,
    but it's not a repeater.

If it comes to the drive-in, I'll DEFINITELY go to see it since
I'd love to hear the sound through my system!!

"True Lies" sounded incredible, and I suspect this will be the
    	same.

It's worth the money, entertaining movie.
I enjoyed it and considering this is the third one that's surprising.
One doesn't get bored watching it and there are some great action
    packed scenes.

Sure are a lot of action movies lined up for the summer.

Milford [NH] Twin Drive-In is playing this film on one of their
screens, and they are now open 7 days a week for the season.

On Screen II they are showing Crimson Tide, another action film
(and also another 1st run new film).

Well the Oklahmoa incident doesn't seem to of had an effect
as the prelim. weekend box office numbers show this film was
the largest opening weekend grosser this year (and it wasn't
even a 3 or 4 day weekend) with something like $21.2 Million
	in ticket sales ......

It wasn't a waste of time, but my suspension of disbelief was stretched
beyond a limit or two, there were too many coincidences, too many
attempted plot twists, and a fairly anticlimatic resolution.

It was worth the matinee price and the DTS sound was indeed, cool.

Die Hard with a Vengance (and there really wasn't much vengance
involved, alas) was about the same ratio less good as Die Hard II as
Die Hard II was less good than Die Hard. I have no doubts it will make
    money, though.

I dunno about this. I'd be curious to hear if the film makers decided
to edit things out a bit after the OKC explosion. Why? Well, not to
give any huge spoilers away but for all the nastiness of explosions, I
don't remember anybody dying in the movie, at least at the hands of the
bad guys (ooo, I take that back. They did actually kill one person,
but not with a bomb). You'd have these huge explosions in places where
people were walking in CROWDS and aftwards, it was all cuts and bruises
and that sort of thing. Er....yeah. McLean was a greater danger than
    the bad guys. :)

    Cheers,

A Entertainment Weekly issue after the bombing did say that
the film was being edited in light of the bombing incident
(I was going to mention this in my previous reply but forgot,
	thanks for the reminder).

Caught this one over the weekend. The reviews were right, it's
a great action flick. Only complaints were the ending, which lacked
action compared to the rest of the film (ie. wimpy ending scene),
and that the sound volume in the theatre was a little too loud.
837.14Huh.... I don't get it :-(TROOA::TRP109::Chrisdedicated sybariteFri Jun 02 1995 14:107
Can somebody help me and explain that thing with the two
water containers? Ya see.... Bruce and Sam had a 5 gallon
container and a 3 gallon container. They had to have EXACTLY
4 gallons to put on top of a bomb to diffuse it, using only these
two containers. The action moved so fast, that I didn't understand
the explanation they gave for finally figuring out how to do it and
it bugged me for at least the next 10 minutes of the movie!

Re: .14

It's just another ancient variation of the traditional tower
	of hanio puzzle.

Five	Three
0	0	initial
5	0	fill five gallon from water supply
2	3	fill three gallon from five gallon (leaves 2 in five gallon)
2	0	dump out three gallon jug
0	2	transfer remaining contents of five into three gallon
5	2	fill give gallon again from water supply
4	3	fill three gallon from five gallon again, leaves 4 in five jug

The reason you missed the explanation is that I don't think
    	they showed the whole procedure.

I never really shook the "it's only a movie" sensation, and I have to
wonder if giving Jeremy Irons more screen time would have helped.
(Giving Samuel L. Jackson lots of screen time certainly helped.) But
lots of things to boom, which seems to be pretty much what is expected
from the movie, so it was still a satisfying movie experience.

I've just seen this, its good to see that the movies are going back to
that great tradition of having Germans as the bad guys $%^

Can anyone tell me the name of the song and singer at the start of the
film when you see the city views and the first bomb go off. It
something like "summer in the city".
