794.0. "Dolores Claiborne" by MAL009::RAGUCCI () Wed Mar 29 1995 01:58

Saw Dolores Claborne over the weekend. It's nothing like Misery
Her character (Kathy Bates), was great, softer, had good reasoning
to what she had to. Jennifer J. Leigh (very under rated) was adequate
as her estranged daughter, she underplays her role. The supporting
casts were excellent too. Hey I'm no critic but I know what like,
and know good performances. 4*'s from me.

I normally shy away from Stephen King's movie renditions (after Carrie, how
could it get much better) but I saw Dolores Claiborne because of Kathy
Bates. What an amazing performance for her as well as from the rest of the
cast. Everything worked together--brooding gray skies, fog, mist. The
script was literate. I never once tried to get a peak at my watch "to
see how much longer". The characters were well developed, complex; a dark
Gothic tale that had us both spellbound and completely involved.

This is an outstanding movie. I've always felt that Steven King's real
talent was not so much being a horror writer but his ability to develop
characters with depth. His good guys usually have a dark side and his bad guys
are either so eccentric that they are fascinating or they have a human side that
allows you to empathizes with their position. That's a refreshing change from
the normal Hollywood standard of white hats and black hats.

This movie is Steven King at his best. The major characters are complex multi
dimensional people who are played very well by a very talented cast. Both
Kathy Bates and Jennifer J. Leigh do an outstanding job and behave in a very
realistic way to the events they face. The other characters are also well
developed, especially Vira, the rich old widow.

Great movie, at least **** out of *****

I loved Vera's conversation with Dolores about
accidents and how they can sometimes be a woman's
best friend. That Vera was something else!

I really enjoyed this movies although I thought that JJL was overacting
in places, not underacting. Mostly just the scene where Dolores is
being officially questioned. Not a stab at JJL cause I think she's
wonderful (Rush being a good example of just how good she is), just a
note for the director who I think pushed her just a bit too far.

This film's strength is the great performances from just about everyone
who appears in it. And the cinematography and music create quite a mood.
Unfortunately, the story is cheesy, and the dramatic interpretation
strains it. The film has the structure of a suspense thriller, but the
intentions of a psychological family drama. The rift is too wide.

For a couple films along the lines of tough women who won't let bad men
keep them down, I recommend "Ruby In Paradise" and "Mortal Thoughts".
