785.0. "Ticket sales and money collection" by BUSY::BUSY::SLABOUNTY (Trouble with a capital 'T') Fri Mar 17 1995 19:32

A friend and I went to see "The Brady Bunch" the night it came
out. We walked into the theater [this theater had recently
moved the ticket sales into the theater, right next to the
concession sales], bought a pair of tickets for the next show
and went across the street for supper.

Went back over to the theater 1/2 hour later, walked in the
door, went around the [long] ticket line and concession line
and strolled in to catch the movie. Piece of cake.

Now this is NOT an advertisement for buying tickets in ad-
vance for a movie you know will generate alot of ticket sales.
The whole point of this is that we were never stopped when we
got back over there and were never asked to show our tickets.
We could have walked right in without buying tickets and saved
$6+ each if we wanted to.

How can they be this stupid ... not having someone inside the
place monitoring traffic? Or do they feel it's not that import-
ant, and that no one is stupid enough to try it?

Where do you live? I know here in Los Angeles they practically have
armed guards in the theatres. If you so much as leave the auditorium
to use the restroom you had better have your ticket stub on you or they
will escort you out. When we leave the theatre in a multiplex they
usher you directly to the nearest exit. You're not really allowed to
wander around. I've been stopped before just trying to cross the lobby
to use the payphones after my movies has let out.

Perhaps the people who take your ticket dont really care if you have
paid or not. If ushers at theaters in the United States are paid
minimum wage, like they are in Canada, you get minimum effort. Some
people call it solidarity, others call it laziness. Try it again, but
    dont pay.

Maybe they just expect you to be honest.

In the Boston area there seem to be two areas, an outer area that you
can enter without a ticket (which contains the box office and concessions)
and an inner area for which you need either a ticket or the stub.

  Seems to work pretty well,

I thought of that, too, but just for a second. Then I dismissed
it with a "Yeah, right". 8^)

I am VERY honest, and would never try to sneak in for free ...
but I'm sure there are lots of people who would.

I know I've had cases where I wasn't stopped in somewhat similar cases, but
I've chalked it up to them recognizing me (not too many guys in their 30's
with long ponytails in Nashua -- plus, when you see as many movies as me
[72 so far this year] you become a "regular" at several theatres).

Yeah, I guess it's possible, but I hadn't been there for months
before that, and don't know anybody there.

But there's a good chance we were the only 2 that came in and
bought tickets beforehand, and they could have remembered that
    	and let us go.
