726.0. "Cinemania (CD-ROM program)" by RICKS::SANDERS () Tue Dec 20 1994 20:48

I had to put this note in, since I searched for a reference to it and found
none. For those of you who don't know what this is, it is a CD-ROM for PCs
(from Microsoft) that has TONS of movie data. It has complete: Leonard
Maltin's movie review book, Roger Ebert's movie review book, Pauline Kael's
movie review book, the Film Encyclopedia, and, I believe, the Encyclopedia
of Film. All of this information is "hypertexted" together, so you can
jump from a movie review to a filmography of a particular star or director
of the film. Many films are accompanied by a still (as are many of the
actors' bios). Some films also have sound clips (either of a famous scene
or of a famous theme song). There are also about 20 small Quicktime film
clips (from _Silence of the Lambs_ and _2001_ to _African Queen_ and
_Becket_).

It is a MARVELOUS film resource and great fun to browse for hours.
The search function is flexible and powerful. The Cinemania '95 version
(which I do not own) also has a new feature to help you choose a movie
to watch (I believe it's based on movies you already enjoy)...

Anyhow, I highly recommend this for any cinema nut (like me) who loves the
details and likes to have movie information at their fingertips...

This was the very first CD-ROM I ever owned and it's still my favorite.

I know what I want for X-MAS, I've seen it adveritsed.
I thought Prodigy had a large movie database.

I also have the '94 version and enjoy it very much. Do you know if
there is an upgrade special for the '95 version?

The only problem with the concept is that it becomes outdated so quickly,
especially with all the movies they are making these days. Almost needs
to be updated once a quarter. It'd be great if they had a subscription
service -- for a nominal fee you could get periodic updates
automatically, once you've make the initial investment.

    Cheers,

Does Cinemania list the composer of the score? I'm disappointed in the
movie listing books, which do not.

    thanks,

They give you a $10 rebate somehow. It's on the box.
I bought it as a Christmas present at Costco for $49.
It's a lot of fun to play with. Maybe it'll be on
    *my* list for next year.

Once again, a reminder that the (huge, constantly updated) Internet Movie
Database is also out there.

For CD-ROMs, I haven't seen it myself, but if you're looking for lots of
data, the $200 Motion Picture Guide CD-ROM would be my bet; it's based on a
20-volume reference set that I'm familiar with from the Nashua Public Library's
copy and find to be excellent (you won't read fake Quentin Tarantino credits
there, for instance). If the interface is any good, it should be the winner.
I've got a friend with a copy on order; will report back when it arrives. (Oh,
no glitz, like film clips; too much real data.)
