725.0. "The Cheaters (1945)" by RICKS::SANDERS () Tue Dec 20 1994 20:42

Hi.

I haven't browsed the movie notes in quite a while, so you can consider
me a novice noter...

This time of year always gets me thinking about one particular holiday
movie that I used to love watching when I was younger. The movie is called
_The Cheaters_ (1945, Republic) and it stars Billie Burke, Eugene Pallette
and Joseph Schildkraut in a wonderful (at least my memory of it is wonderful)
story about some selfish rich people who learn a bit about humanity and
humility from a washed-up down-on-his-luck actor (Schildkraut). The main
thrust of the film is that the family needs some money quick and they find
out that they can get some inheritance money if a long-lost relative
doesn't collect.... So, they find the relative, don't tell her she's worth
millions and befriend her. They then whisk her (and the down-on-his- luck
actor, who they describe as their "charity case") to their country home to
keep her away from the media until the deadline for her to come forward has
passed...

Anyhow, it's been years since I've seen it (on Chicago TV) and I haven't
seen it anywhere in the Boston area or on the voluminous cable channels
that I receive (it's been 10 years)... I'm trying to figure out a strategy
to find out where this movie is, how I can interest local stations to play
it again, and how I can interest a company to put it out on video.

First, does anyone else have any fond memories of this movie? Has anyone
seen it lately? Anyone have any ideas in locating the film and influencing
companies to make it available?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

That movie sounds good: Look up in "Movies Unltd" catalog to
see if it's on video, or any other video store, someone will
help or can put you in the right direction. I'll keep looking for it
    too! Welcome ......
