697.0. "Love Affair" by TUXEDO::HASBROUCK () Mon Nov 21 1994 00:36

Warren Beatty and Annette Benning in a mild love story. The reason
to see this film is a 10 minute cameo by Katherine Hepburn. Her acting
career now spans over 60 years and her performance here is wonderful.

A critic called this film a "shameless tearjerker". That's an overstatement.
Terry doesn't die of cancer, or die at all, for that matter. And no one cries
when Auntie buys the farm. My criticism is that the film suffers from
what Eudora Welty described as the problem of lovers - they're boring.

Annette Benning is one of those great contemporary actresses like Kathleen
Turner, who has more exhuberance and range than modern Hollywood can handle.
She tears up "The Grifters". She glows in this film, but the material is flat.

697.1Yep, I liked it.REGENT::WOODWARDI'll put this moment...hereTue Apr 18 1995 15:298
    A great rental: old-fashioned mushy love story.

    Nice lighting throughout. I noticed the close-ups of Warren were treated
    carefully as not to reveal his true age.

    I loved seeing Kate Hepburn again.

This is the third version of this film. The first (_Love Affair_. '38-'39?)
starred Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer and was well done but is rather dated now.
The second (_An Affair to Remember_ '53) starred Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant
with Maria Ouspenskaya as the grandmother and was easily the best, imo. This
latest version has the weakest acting and is the best looking.

Why was the grandmother part changed to an aunt? Many people have praised
Katherine Hepburn, I think this is mostly a result of who she is and her
age rather than an objective opinion of her performance. I thought it was
pretty weak and almost painful at times. Nowhere near as good as Maria
Ouspenskaya's, she just doesn't appear to be physically capable of it anymore,
regrettably. But it was nice to see her acting again.

One plus this time around was that Annette Bening is by far the most beautiful
Terry of the three.

    re.2
    	with "4" oscars to her credit I don't think Kate really
    	cares. She is one of the best!

    	ps. I have no desire to see Love Affair, you are right, the
    		2nd re-make is good.
