675.0. "THE SPECIALIST" by CAPO::SMITH_MA () Tue Oct 11 1994 21:02

    I saw this last night...

Sly Stallone, Sharon Stone, Eric Roberts, James Woods and Rod Steiger.

The Specialist is your typical action/adventure flick with lots of
noise, explosions, nudity and gratutious violence. Usually I am only a
fan of films like this if they are HORRIBLE so that I can treat them as
a comedy and guffaw my way through them. So saying, this movie was not
bad enough for my taste. ;^)

I thought Eric Roberts did a good job being sleezy, but everyone else
    was mediocre, including Rod Steiger.

Also, what is the appeal with Stallone? I find him totally unappealing
and I do not enjoy watching him in the love(?) scenes. The His and Her
Aikido/Rubbing-myself scenes were so ridiculous that I almost asked for
    my money back.

Sharon Stone, who has, obviously, built her career on being naked, was
completley boring and the motivation for her storyline was _so_ full of
holes that I spent too much time trying to figure out how the makers of
this monster thought we would believe any of it instead of just
letting the story happen. Sure she's drop-dead gorgeous but we saw
that in Basic Instinct, Sliver, etc. Show us something besides skin,
    Sharon!

Oh and one more thing...when did James Woods become the gratutitous
sleaze bag? Remember him in Immediate Family? He was sweet and I
enjoyed him. Now it seems that he's always on the oily side of the
law. Why?!?!?! Sure, he does a good job, but it's much more
interesting to me to see him play a human being instead of some
comic-strip goon with poor aim who always gets it in the end.

So...anybody else have anything to say? I'd like to hear it!

    	Speak for yourself!! 8^)

[And besides, maybe that's all she's got to show.]

Joyce Kilhawick of WBZ News panned it last night. She said that it was
appropriate that Sly was playing a bomber because the movie bombed.

There are lots of actors and actresses who hit it big with one giant hit
then die because they can only do one character that works. Sharon Stone was
great in Basic Instinct but it's not the kind of character that can be
duplicated or repeated easily.

Sly was lucky in that he had two parts that he did well, Rockie and Rambo.
Everything else he's done has been pretty bad.

Good point. But wouldn't it be nice if that space for rent came
    furnished?

I wouldn't put much stock in a Joyce Kulhawick review. She hates
    Everything!

FWIW, Siskel and Ebert voted thumbs down; said the script was stupid
and Stallone was wooden. Gave kudos to James Woods, though.

I believe Lyons/Medvid (PBS "Sneak Previews" [the show that launched
S & E FWIW]) also gave thumbs down.

Both S&E and L&M both commented that this is at least the
3rd mad bomber film this year (after "Speed" and "Blown Away"),
and said how said this time we are supposed to be routing
for Stalone who blows up cops.

Let it be said that it was Siskel & Ebert who launched "Sneak Previews,"
not the other way around.

Yep, this film was incredibly boring...I must have fallen asleep cos
      I didn't see Rod Steiger..

Granted, Sharon Stone has got some kit on her, I wish she could act
      as good as she looks.

Rod Steiger played the father of the character played by Eric Roberts.
