Word of mouth among friends says it's brilliant. I'm
anxious to see it, but I haven't gotten into Boston to
go to the Nick yet.

Transvestites and transexuals in the Australian outback.

Not exactly your neighborhood Bible-belt mainstay. But what few reviews
    I've heard have been positive.

The name of the (Australian) film is "The Adventures
of Priscilla, Queen of the Outback". It stars Terence
Stamp, Hugo Weaving, and another Aussie actor whose
name escapes me.

It is the story of three Sydney drag queens (one of
whom is transexual) taking their show out on the road
in a bus named Priscilla. It is very, very funny,
but the story is not limited to comedy about be-sequinned
guys lip-synching to Donna Summer.

It's playing in Boston at the Nickelodeon and probably
the Cheri.

    Thanks guys.

Terrance Stamp wasn't happy with his looks as a Woman, since he has
dated some of the Worlds most beautiful
    ie. Jean Shrimpton
        Julie Christie
to name a few.and your right not Main-stream America
even though peole exist who are into that.

Yet one more title change needed. The actual title is:

"The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert"

(The comma is optional. I'm looking at the display ad now. FWIW, I
think the "The Adventures of" part was added for US consumption.)

saw it over the w/e. Funny, elaborate costumes, great scenery,

worth seeing. Terrance Stamp under played everything perfectly.
the supporting cast and music are excellent. Not main-stream at all.
That is just what the film is saying....Wait until the end credits too.

    HI,

Being an Australian in Sydney my viewpoint may be biased.

However everybody should go and see it. It's brilliant. But then I
have been to the Australian outback and it may be more relevant to me.

Somebody couldn't remember Guy Pierce's name. I don't know if you
watch Neighbours in the states (they certainly do in England) but
    that's where he started.

PS I hope I did this right. I have only just started looking at all
    these notes files.

Saw "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" this weekend.

I found it funny, sad, tender and silly. It had bizarre costumes,
and that one guy (Guy Pearce?) who played "Felicia" was gorgeous!
At least when he looked like a man.

I saw it in a group of five, and it sparked a long discussion about
gender roles and stereotypes. We all agreed that it was a good film.
I recommend it, but you'd better be in the mood for some seriously
    campy guys.

This was our weekend for films. We rented it, and I guess enjoyed it. I
agree about Guy Pearce, he is very good looking. I wonder how much
acting, or lack of it went into his characterization of Adam/Felicia.

This is a visual movie, if you know what I mean. When all's said and done,
I felt the plot couldn't carry the film without the outlandish costumes
and outrageous behavior of the protagonists. I did feel the situations
they found themselves in were much milder than I would have expected of
    the outback.

If you want another sample of his acting, something a little more
macho, he appears in an imported television series called "Snowy River:
The McGregor Saga." It seems to be the Australian equivalent of a
western. Sorry for the delayed response, but I had to locate the show
first. I knew it was on, but since I don't watch it, I couldn't
remember when. I can now report that in our area it's on the Family
channel at 6PM, both saturday and sunday. That's channel 51 if you're
    on Cox cable.

Rented this movie last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I
guarantee you will never be able to watch a Terrance Stamp
performance in any other movie and not remember him in
this. The movie is about 3 drag queens who decide to leave
Sydney, Australia and travel into the outback of Alice to
perform their act. Needless to say, what was accepted in
a big city is not necessarily accepted in a small town.
The costumes were amazing (and in fact the movie won the
Oscar for best costumes last year) and all three lead actors
did a very commendable job with their performances. I think
I remember Guy Pearce from a soap opera when I was living in
Sydney a few years ago ("Neighbors?") The title is the name
the guys (gals?) have given their bus.

***.5 out of *****

Re -.1

For a better revival of ABBA, see "Muriel's Wedding", another great Australian
movie. Didn't the actor who played Muriel's father also play the old mechanic
who accompanied the troupe to Alice Springs?
