568.0. "Soundtracks" by 8269::CAMERON_S () Wed Jun 08 1994 07:26

Here is a note for the soundtracks of moies that we all like.

One of my favorites is the soundtrack from the movie Singles. I
recently bought the soundtrack from the Crow and it is also very goo.
Other favorites include Cool Runnings and the Last Action Hero and the
Breakfast Club. Oh yeah and I can't forget The Point of No Return.
    Nina Simone is pretty cool!

I could list a lot of great soundtracks but I have three favorites:

_The Ghost and Mrs Muir_ Benard Herrman A very beautiful and haunting
score for one of my favorite films. On Varese Sarabande.

_Kings Row_ Eric Wolfgang Korngold Possibly the best score of one of
the industries greatest composers. Not what you'd expect given the type of
film this is. Of course you also wouldn't expect the film to be as good as
it is given the type of film it is. :^) On Varese Sarabande.

_Twin Peaks_ Angelo Badalamenti Assuming a television soundtrack qualifies.
IMHO the best score ever for a TV series and the best ever TV series.

I'm tempted to list Tim Burton's _Batman_ but it's not quite up there with
these three.

Randy

PS I'm not including scores for musicals here, I'd make that a separate
catagory entirely.

I hesitate to say this, but the soudtrack to 'Valley Girl' has some
really good 80's punk-pop on it - the Plimsouls rule!

568.83759::AHERNDennis the MenaceThu Jun 09 1994 01:325
I would say my favorite soundtrack must be Prokofiev's score for
    Sergei Eisenstein's "Alexander Nevsky".

I think I have seven different recordings of this.

568.942371::BARTLETTIThu Jun 09 1994 10:4213

I can't find anything sound about listening to any of these tracks.

I'd rather lose my gonads laughing at the Life of Brian.

Music and sound effects compliment the visuals. Give me great dialogue
any day. If I want sounds there are herds of them already out there recorded
for aural pleasure by artists with that specific purpose.

As for pop in the pictures, its pap on the radio so spare me...

"Quigley Down Under" has a nice rousing soundtrack, which I am
endeavoring to purchase. Done by Basil Poulidorous (sp). Really cool,
    really non-Conan.

"Star Wars" (at least the first two movies) seems to pretty much define
the full-blown motion picture score and I really liked them. "Jaws"
holds a nice, special place in my heart, too, just for it's
genre-defining da-dum, da-dum. Besides, it was the first soundtrack
I ever purchased, right after I saw the movie. (I wonder how I
afforded it, considering I had to be only 11 or so at the time. And
while records seem to cost, oh about $7 back then, being 11, I wasn't
exactly in the peak of my Earning Years--like I am now. Not. :)
Oh well. Mysteries lost to history).

I really liked the soundtrack to the movie "Swashbuckler", which had
great, well, swashbuckling music. Jerry Goldsmith did that one, I
    think.

For Fairy Tale surrealness, you can't beat Danny Elfman's
    "Edward Scissorhands".

Half of my CD collection (and vinyl) are soundtracks, so I'm not
    including quite a few favorites.

I think I liked soundtracks more when they weren't laden with Top 40
hits and were well, the score to the movie. Now,

    Cheers,

Another vote for "Quigley", and throw in one for "Conan" as well.

One that I found recently on CD after a 10-year search - "The Three
    Musketeers" (1970's vintage).

568.18Music to my ears58633::TRP109::ChristineIn my mind.... I'm already goneThu Jun 09 1994 19:2620
I find that one of the first things I notice about movies is the
background music (even before how good or bad the acting happens to
be). It annoys me so much that people in the theatre always seem to
start gabbing whenever there is no dialogue on screen - is it just me
or does everybody else get stuck sitting in front of the "talkers"??

I rented "Reservoir Dogs" recently and then HAD to go out and buy the
soundtrack - great music and some classic dialogue

A "score" that I adore is "The Man from Snowy River" - I think that one
of the best ways to judge the music is if you can remember the scene of
the movie it applied to, and listening to this CD I can almost feel
myself galloping over the mountains of Oz.

John Berry has written many wonderful scores, but I guess my favourite
would be "Dances with Wolves" - great music for a great movie.

Went to see Mavarick last night - was surprised to see that Randy Newman
composed the music - it was very good. One of my old favourite soundtracks
was for "Rags" (I think that's the right name - feel free to correct me) -
it's been so long since I lisented to it.... I'll have to go into my album
collection and find it again.

Randy was also on Letterman last night and it sounds like it's a pretty
tortous job to score a movie.

If I remember right, the Italian rock group Goblin includes director
    Dario "Renaissance Dude" Argento.

Could the "Rags" memory actually be of "Ragtime", which Randy Newman
    scored?

Newman's "Maverick" work disappointed me; I was hoping for a "Long
Goodbye" type of approach, with a dozen different versions of the TV
theme song, and a special appearance by Caroliner Rainbow.

Yes, you are correct sir!

This topic has really go me thinking.... there are SO many wonderful scores.
How about "Glory" with the choir getting louder and louder as the troop
sbegan to attack the fort? Another one... "Sophie's Choice" - haunting and
sad.

Re .41: There's a conference COMET::RECORDS, especially for LPs; topic
1000 is the "for sale" note. [There's also the HUMANE::CLASSIFIED_ADS
conference, if you want to reach a more general audience.]

Another possibility: check out your local phone book for dealers in
used LPs. Some of them are considered collectors' items - and even
if you don't have any of those, you might find a buyer for the ones you
do have. Better than just giving them away.

[I had some luck with some of mine a few years back, at a plain old
yard sale; I included "LPs" in the list of items in the newspaper ad,
and some guy showed up before opening time to look through the stack. I
had a few fairly choice oldies among all the dreck, and he offered me a
decent (would have been better if I'd wanted to bargain, but I didn't)
    price for the whole lot.]

I don't know about you folks, but I'm pretty tired of movies being
developed to "fit" a soundtrack. Almost every night when I do get the
opportunity to watch some t.v. I see an add for a movie and the first
thing the commercial plugs is the soundtrack. And not to get into
another type of rathole, but 9 out of 10 the soundtracks involve Rap
music or music by Rap artists. What happened to creating a good
movie and working on finding the appropriate songs for them. Same
thing with movie posters: XYZ movie FEATURING XYZ ARTIST on the
    SOUNDTRACK.

Soundtracks used to be a plus with a good movie, now you can get a
"good" soundtrack and a poor quality movie.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I standing on my own on this one?

Some soundtracks I've got...and how I rate 'em...

The Last Action Hero - 'bout the whole album is good, artists
include Alice in Chains, AC/DC, Queensryche, DefLeppard, Fishbone
& Cypress Hill. If you're into Heavy Metal/Grunge/Hard Core Rap!

The Crow - Another decent album, artists include Nine Inch Nails,
The Cure, Helmet & Stone Temple Pilots.

Clerks - Great Movie, O.K. soundtrack. Got it mainly for the Alice
in Chains tune "Got Me Wrong" and it's got little cuts from the flick
like the scene about hermaphrodidic(sp?) porn.

Dumb & Dumber - O.K. soundtrack. Artists include Green Jelly, Dead
Eye Dick & The Crash Test Dummies. And some *WRETCH* dance tracks...

I don't think it's so much that the movie is being developed to "fit"
the soundtrack, but that the current trend is to try to populate your
soundtrack with things which will sell on the radio. Especially for
the popular young demographic -- Dangerous Minds comes to mind. On the
other hand, it works for nostalgic purposes, too. In that case, we
have Forrest Gump and to a lesser extent, Mr. Holland's Opus.

Having a "cool" soundtrack is probably perceived as a way to draw in
viewers. It is also a very good way to sell records (CD's if you
    prefer).

Another trend is to release a soundtrack of music "from and/or inspired
by". I think this started with all those Madonna songs from Dick
Tracy, only one or two of which were actually IN the movie. Also,
Prince (the Artist Currently Known As Some Weird Symbol) did that for
Batman. The soundtrack for Speed did that. And for the Crow. Even
less successful movies (like Virtuosity, which wasn't that good of a
movie, nor did very well) initially put out a soundtrack album which
was basically a bunch of songs. Needless to say, Disney does that all
the time -- the Lion King even had the Elton John version of the same
songs which were in the movie, "popularized".

Now, there's a subset of folks who want to see the SCORE on the
soundtrack, and fortunately, what happens is that usually you get both
the "soundtrack" to the movie and the "score" to the movie. Speed,
Forrest Gump, the Crow, Mr. Hollands Opus, Batman, and so on have all
done that. These are generally what *I* buy, me liking the score to a
movie more than "songs from and inspired by".

So anyway, I don't think there's all that many movies developed AROUND
a soundtrack, but I do believe that what the soundtrack ends up being
is geared for marketing purposes. As a result, the "With Songs By Your
Favorite Artist!" and the separate released of a soundtrack album and
a score album. At least somebody still puts out the scores.

When you say the 'score', are you talking about an actual recording of

I prefer Soundtracks that are not just a collection of potential
or proven hits from various bands. "The Big Chill," "The Crow,"
"Last Action Hero," "Born On The Fourth Of July" - they're all the
same to me - unrelated songs by unrelated bands trying to be forced
into a movie. I don't care how good any individual song is, if it's
not designed for the movie, leave it out.

Some notable deviations from this trend include: "To Live And Die in
LA," the superb, custom set of songs from Wang Chung and "Pee Wee's Big
Adventure," a true classic from Oingo Boingo's Danny Elfman.

Still, the best soundtracks are the ones that just set the right moods:
"Alien," "Jaws," "Raising Arizona," "Eraserhead," etc.

"The Crow" soundtrack suits the movie just fine if ya check out the
lyrics to some of the tunes...

Alot of the other soundtracks are simply promo albums for new bands who
wanna get their tunes into the market somehow. Or the peole who decide
what tunes go on the soundtrack try to pick tunes that everybody likes.
ie, "Forrest Gump", "Dazed & Confused", "Wayne's World". No one wants
to buy an old album in order to get that "one good tune" when someone
has put'em all on a soundtrack for ya!

Has anyone mentioned Streets of Fire? It bills itself as a rock and
roll fable. It stars Diane Lane as a rock and roll singer, Rick Moranis
as her annoying agent, Michael Pare as the tough good guy, and Amy
Madigan as the tough good guy too. None of them sing on the soundtrack.
The movie is OK-to-good, and the music is excellent. Dan Hartman's
"I Can Dream about You" is from this film.

You got it. The bad guy was Willem Dafoe. Bad. It had several good
songs that could stand alone but fit very well into the film. One of
them was a clever one done a capella in the film but filled out with
background musicians in the soundtrack called "Countdown to Love."
Robert Townsend was in the group that did this in the film, one (if
not the) first of his movie roles.

I had a feeling you wuz gonna say that but I'd hoped it might have been

I'd also recommend using a "Hi-Fi Stereo" VCR (assuming the
tape says "Hi-Fi Stereo" on it), than a plain old "dolby
stereo" VCR. The Dolby tracks are not much different than
those on a standard audio cassette (small tracks on the edge
of the tape), but Hi-Fi Stereo is somehow encoded over the same
width of the tape as the video and gives an audio dynamic range
I believe in the 80db range, almost as good as an audio CD.
