    I can't say I was a major fan of his, though I usually found him funny
    (both in his SCTV stint and in movies). I do have fond memories of
    "Armed and Dangerous," in which he was a cop fired for what seemed to
    be a knack for doing the wrong thing at the wrong time; as so often
    happens in comedies, he winds up being vindicated after a long string
    of doing more wrong things at wrong times until finally all the
    wrongness results in one glorious moment of "right". (The film's got
    one of the most ridiculously cathartic car-crash sequences I know of -
    and the scene in the sex'n'leather shop is pretty cute, too.)

    I liked "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles". Candy played a
    quintessential Candy character, and interacted very well with Steve
    Martin.

    According the to articles in the local papers on Candy the characters he
    played in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" and Uncle Buck were close to
    the real Candy, a guy with the heart of gold.

    We are really going to miss him, he was one of the funniest Canadians
    ever, and we need all the guys like him we can get.

    I hadn't realized how close he was to my family, both literally and in
    spirit. It turns out his farm was about 3 miles north of my house, and
    he was born here (Newmarket, Ont.), although he grew up Toronto and
    spent most of his time in LA. He apparently came back here to get away
    from things.

    Rest in Peace, John.

    Very sad. I wasn't a major fan, either, but I thought he was funny and
    was sorry to hear the news.

    I keep thinking of the scene from Uncle Buck where he goes to visit the
    school principal, a woman with a horrible wart on her face, and he
    winds up calling her Mrs. Melanoma (sp?).

    John Candy, more than a lot of actors, could look like an average guy
    just trying to get through the day. Without doubt he acted in some
    real dreck, but he was in some real jewels, too. I'm not a a major fan
    (I'm not a major fan of anything) but he gave me a lot of good laughs.

    It said his wife and kid(s) were at the hotel when it happened.

    I enjoyed Mr Candy's work in "Stripes", "SPlash" and "Home Alone" and
    was looking forward to his new movie...Entertainment Tonight had done a
    few stories on it in the last few weeks.

    I'll miss him and his work.

	hotel? All the reports I've heard thus far say he died
	in his sleep in his trailer.

	What I find interesting is that he supposedly has over
	40 film credits!!!!! My guess is that alot of them must
	of been small roles and/or cameos in order to get that
	many credits at his age! Jon, what does the USENET database
	list as his credits?

    The story that ran in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette said he and his
    wife had a son and a daughter (didn't give ages).

    He gave us so many wonderful characters! The Schmenge (sp?) Brothers
    (and lots of others on SCTV)....  I hope they can finish "Wagons East";
    I certainly wouldn't mind another actor stepping into Mr. Candy's role,
    if that's what they'd have to do to get it on the screen for us.

    Re .16: yeah, I was surprised to hear that, too; "John Candy wasn't in
    'JFK'!!" But I saw a clip of his appearance, so I guess he was. [He
    played a rather nasty good old boy type in a white suit and hat, and
    got to deliver a scathing line to Costner's character.] Seemed to be
    pretty much a cameo, though it did suggest that Candy had a wider range
    than he usually made use of.

    JC was in both the theatrical and video releases of "JFK". He was
    the lawyer who met Garrison (Costner) in a New Orleans restaurant.
    He was dressed in white and chain-smoked. I believe Garrison was
    quizzing him about his defense of the character played by Joe Pesci
    and JC's character was warning Garrison to not get involved in the
    assassination investigation.

>>>    Whose Harry Crumb?
was ALL Candy and terribly under-rated.

>>>    Nothing But Trouble
had hardly any Candy and was far the worse movie I ever saw in my life.

>>>    Only The Lonely
had quite a lot of Van Morrison music in it :-)

>>>    Planes, Trains and Automobiles
I think this was his best performance ever.

I have been a big Fan of John since I first saw him cheatin' the dumb guy in
Poker in "Stripes". I thought I'd seen all the John Candy movies there were to
see, but .13 has certianly enlightened me (thanks). I've seen a lot of those
movies and can't for the life of me, remember John in several of them (Brewsters
Millions exspecially throws me - did he play a security guard or something?).
Looks like it's time to go re-renting. With all those cameo appearances he's
made, I'm suprised I didn't see him in "The Player".

I will certianly miss John. Like musicians, Actors live on forever in their art.

    In memory of John Candy, who was one of our favorite comediens, we have
    decided to name our puppy "Candy". The puppy (a German Sheppard) was

    That's one of the greatest things about the movie, the ending is so
    unpredictable. That quick bashful smile that Candy presents at the
    end is one that leaves you wondering;
    	- He's happy because he's found new friends
    		-or-
    	- He's sad and reflecting back to the days when he had his wife
          to hold.

    Chokes me up too.
